Can we please stop with the politics?

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on

Can we please stop with the politics. This site is getting ridiculous. I’m not talking about the front page stuff from Brian, I’m talking about the blatant political talk by so many people in many of these threads. I don’t care how you feel politically and I’m getting sick of being subjected to seeing this in a good chunk of threads. The subtle interjection by some to try and say how they feel is pathetic. This is a call for the mods to please start banning people who have to run their mouths about their political beliefs. At the very least please start a separate area for political conversation so the people who can’t help themselves can go there. Be kind to each other everyone and stop putting your angry comments in threads to try and get your point across. The vast majority of us don’t come here. Better idea, have an open mind and talk with friends about it, not random internet people. PLEASE STOP RUINING THE BLOG I LOVE!

Honestly, good riddance if you do. I think the no poticis rule *here* is good, but if you are sitting on the fence these days you are not fulfilling an essential duty of your citizenship.

“The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.”—Dante Alighieri

These days paying attention to the news is more important than ever. "Extremely moderate" (whatever that means) is irrellivant.

Are you extremely moderate or extremely indifferent?

I’m moderate and absolutely indifferent about ever engaging in political discussion.

I’m extremely successful in sales, and my clients love me. Would never in a million years bring up politics in conversation with this current polarized environment.

Cheap awesome drugs are part of the appeal of S America to me. And while there definitely is corruption in S America(corruption is very ingrained into Latin American culture), there are very few places where I actually have felt unsafe. Most places in S America are no more dangerous than any US city.

I typically travel to places that I can spend 1+ month at a time at, so with the cost of New Zealand it's not even on the list. However, there are plenty of other places in SE Asia that fit the bill, and I will be traveling there later this year.

I'm in the same boat, lost a few friends over politics because they think I "red-pilled" with this election.  I'm a moderate just like yourself, apparently if you support one decision on either side of the parties, you get labelled one or the other.  They just don't come around anymore, it's weird and shitty especially since one of them have been friends with me since grade school 25 years ago or so.

We're living in a very unique time, politically. Can't fault people for having it on the mind, and letting it slip into non-political forums.

But I do fault everyone who hold different beliefs than I do. They are bad people.

Which posts were political on the front page? I only remember the one about the local election (which I was honestly surprised Brian put up in the first place but it's his website so whatever). There have been more on the board that I can recall. Didn't realize the Kevin Wilson/Hitler one got political until I just saw it. I have strong opinions about politics but I don't care to discuss it here. More of a family argument than a website one...

I wouldn't say "so whatever"...  I mean, he did write and post the rule that said nobody - including himself - would make any political posts.  Personally, I don't care that he did.  I have no care to read about local AA mayoral runs, so I didn't click on it (same as not clicking on other topics that don't interest me).  But, posting a rule for everyone, and then saying 'i can do it, but you can't', is wrong.  Change the rule so it says 'Brian can post whatever he wants, and you can't', and I'd be fine with it.

Honestly don't know how the fuck A HITLER THREAD gets divided among political lines UNLESS 1) You are a Nazi 2) You are a sympathizer

The discussion was: "Most people should be anti-Nazi no matter the politics"

Then someone said, tongue n cheek: "You'd think, then Charlottesville"

How the fuck is that political? It is a fact that Charlottesville had a Nazi/white supremacist march not too recently.

Either way I still miss the old website because this new one is OD on useless the white space.

Has anyone seen MGrowOld btw? I haven't seen him since the Cavs lost.

My thoughts exactly about the Hitler thread.

Also agreed about the website. I currently have 720 mgopoints but says I still can't post because I dont have 100 points yet, I can't gain or lose points, everyone else's points are stagnant and I can't vote. The site is so buggy rn it's crazy

I think that's a bit of a oversimplification, friend-- there were also libertarians at that event, too. They weren't featured in the media to the extent that the alt-right were for all their antics in Charlottesville, but the event was called "Unite the Right". It wasn't billed as a completely alt-right event, and I'm sure that some innocent people were actually attacked on both sides that day.

Wanton violence is wrong, and whether you're on the left or the right, if you use it for political gain, then it just means your arguments suck.

That said, can we get back to talking about football, basketball, hockey and non-political topics again, now?

If you're on the same side as Nazis and murderers, maybe you should reexamine your politics. Also the rally was specifically organized by and for the far right. Libertarians are usually part of that group, despite liking weed.

Uhhhhhh did your history class skip the American Revolution.... and the Civil war....and miners strikes in the late 19th, early 20th C...  the list goes on and on. Neo-nazis shouldn't get a platform to spread hate. Allowing them to recruit is an act of violence in itself. Stopping them, even through violence, is self defense. Pacifism is spineless.

So are you suggesting we should beat them up? Like that will somehow stop them from thinking the way they do. Or maybe we should kill them all until none of their kind exist? Should we just start rounding up everyone with hateful views and lock them up for life? I’m just trying to figure out what you’re suggesting.

"Allowing them to recruit is an act of violence in itself" is an illogical, fear tactic. If you can't refute a "Nazi recruitment strategy" with a rational argument, then you might need to reevaluate whether your political beliefs are actual logical.

Again, resorting to violence just means your arguments suck.

Whoa I didn't even see the Hitler post. I don't even want to know what that one was about. My guess was that the OP was turned off by some of the board posts that were university-related but also had political elements (the Raymond Kethledge and Jim Jordan/Ohio State posts) and people might have gotten a bit carried away. I definitely mixed up a little in those comment threads.

My theory is that I don't want to see it on here either but, if I see something that is wrong or uncalled for, I'll call it out using facts and logic. Also, I will always do it as politely as possible. In the past I never would have done that, but these days I feel its increasingly necessary to speak up.

I wholeheartedly agree that it has become more and more necessary to speak up. More importantly, I feel it has become imperative that when speaking up to stay calm and polite. All the shouting matches that people get in aren't going to solve a thing. If we, as a people, can get to a point where we treat others with decency and respect, I think that would go a long way towards making everything less divisive. (fuck spelling divisive with no spell check btw)

meh...

its really, really easy to just avoid those posts or skip over the comments that offend you. I don’t know why everybody gets so up in arms on this issue. Brian is entitled to make the rules for his business. The impact will be monetary and he can change those rules as he sees fit.
