Can we please stop with the politics?

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on

Can we please stop with the politics. This site is getting ridiculous. I’m not talking about the front page stuff from Brian, I’m talking about the blatant political talk by so many people in many of these threads. I don’t care how you feel politically and I’m getting sick of being subjected to seeing this in a good chunk of threads. The subtle interjection by some to try and say how they feel is pathetic. This is a call for the mods to please start banning people who have to run their mouths about their political beliefs. At the very least please start a separate area for political conversation so the people who can’t help themselves can go there. Be kind to each other everyone and stop putting your angry comments in threads to try and get your point across. The vast majority of us don’t come here. Better idea, have an open mind and talk with friends about it, not random internet people. PLEASE STOP RUINING THE BLOG I LOVE!

Anonymous sports forums aren't good places for political rants.  Despite the proliferation of #fakenews on facebook it is a good forum because you know your crazy uncle or crazy nephew and you can point them to snopes or politifact or the WSJ/NYT to call them on their BS.

I get that there are radical changes going on and the whole Martin Niemoller "when the took away the X I did nothing" thing, but speak up and talk to people you know and not random folks on MGoBlog.   My repeated talking point isn't going to convince you that your repeated talking point is wrong.

I've had luck finding some podcasts and YouTube videos of discussions - not debates - of different viewpoints.  It really puts ideas in light and context and doesn't involve shouting or name calling.  I think podcasts and YouTube are pretty good media for the sharing of ideas - you just have to find them.  TV and Facebook I find to be not good because the discussion becomes to tiny and limited/unlimited by the constraints of those media.  TV is constrained by time and Facebook is not constrained enough for me, but that's just my experience.  MGoBlog is also not a place I look for discussions of this nature.

The incessant bitching that happens about everything on this blog is really what I'm tired of.  I mean, honestly, I might spend 20-30 minutes max reading content a day (especially in the summer, where there's less content).  My two cents, there are a lot of whiny bitches on here, get over it!

A few weeks back, I posted about a lawsuit that's challenging Michigan's Bias Response Team on the grounds it's violating the first amendment. I had heard about the lawsuit on one of the political channels, from one of the more polarizing talking heads. This was news to me, and I wanted to know more from current students. Unsurprisingly, I got ripped a new one (I totally expected that to happen) but surprisingly, the name of the polarizing talking head was redacted. I did not support that person in the post, I merely cited him as my source. I offered no opinion or judgment in the post. I merely asked whether people knew about this, as it was a lawsuit involving the University of Michigan, my alma mater. I was actually stunned that the mod felt the need to redact the name, and respond as tersely as he did. That we can't even discuss something that directly pertains to Michigan (and in my opinion is not political in and of itself, but is used by people for their own political purposes) is really sad to me.

I'm sure the MODs have political biases, so I'm not surprise some posts are deleted or modified while other political posts are allowed to stay. I just hope this site does not creep towards how my current face book account has become. I have friends on both sides of the political spectrum and every day they post political hit jobs on everything and everyone. It has gotten so bad, I really never look at my FB news feed any longer. For the most part this site remains sport orientated but I see more political posts popping up on sports threads. I just ignore the political posts but if the frequency increase and sport content decreases, then this site will start slipping for those who come here to read Michigan sport news and discuss Michigan sport topics.

I knew it, I'm surrounded by pussies.  If your beliefs are that fragile that what some rando says on a sports blog ruins your day, I got bad news for you, at least half the world disagrees with the things you hold dear, deal with it.  And also, there's a back arrow in the upper left corner of your browser window, use it if you don't like what people are typing.

OP this might be the greatest over-reaction on this board in a while! I usually come here once or twice a day, and rarely see any political fights break out on the board. Civil discussion is what’s wrong with this nation right now. Everyone wants to run to their radio/tv station of choice and hear all the rhetoric spewed on there. Yet never want to here differing opinions on certain subjects. This country is more fractured than ever amongst political lines, and the dems and republicans are the modern-age bloods & crips!

I actually think this thread is reasonably cathartic despite being so shit-posty. We ought to have one of these once in a while just as a Purge-y way to get some of the bad blood out.

I still remember with great fondness the 600-plus comment Brexit thread, still the most epic, unlocked, no-holds barred riot of a thread I've ever seen on here. Those of us who slugged it out in that thread all night got a little worn down, but there's something like a runner's high that kicks in after you're brawling that long. You actually feel somewhat bonded to who you're fighting.

Kinda like rugby... you try to rip their head off for an hour or two, then you go do some drinking and singing with them at the pub (note to non-ruggers, this is what you do after a rugby match).

If you graduated from Michigan, which most of did, you should understand the importance of diversity and not hating people due to skin color or religion or gender.

If Brian disagrees, please tell me (through an email or here). Trump and his hate do not represent anything about our school.

This “no politics” is bullshit when we have a scumbag as potUS

I really don't care about politics being inserted into threads. The thing that gets tiresome are the trolls who come on here an bash the program. There has been big increase in negative trolls who bash our recruits, bash our coaches and our fans. The trolls are a much bigger problem on the new mgoblog than politics.

You've all ruined this blog.

The politics bullshit just came with it like hpv after a shitty one night stand.

Brian should just put an end commenting. Nobody should be subjected to anything you morons write.

It used to be fun when the jean shorts mad-dad brigade was still on m-live. Now that they're here this place has roaches on the burgers, shit on the toilet seat and no paper towels.

Well done, everyone.
