The thing with MAAR and rim attempts is that I think he's great at getting there and creating his own shot, but he's terrible at getting into the paint and passing the ball, which really limits easy rim attempts for guys like Donnal/Doyle.

Both this and the Cutler Martin suspension were too weak by a factor of 4.

I was wondering about that too, though given how veraciously that yearbook seems to be edited, her name was probably actually Susan Smith or something.

71% of the 21 y/o freshmen in college hockey were committed to their school less than a year prior to enrolling. It's absolutely the case that most don't draw much attention until their final year of juniors rather than teams stashing them until they reach that age.

LaFontaine is the same age, plays for the same junior team, and has the same numbers as Wisconsin's Matt Jurusik last year. Jurusik has been fine but nothing special so far for the Badgers.

It happens in other leagues too. There was a suspension in Hockey East and two in Atlantic Hockey last week.
The reason you hear a lot more announced these days than in the past is because the on-ice game disqualification penalty has basically been erased. By NCAA rule, you can only add to a penalty called on the ice, you can't lessen it after the fact. So officials always err on the side of caution by just handing out the game misconduct and then letting the league review via video to determine if the player should sit out the next game.

There's a hierarchy of sports. It goes Football-->Basketball-->Hockey-->Either baseball or wrestling(?)--->Everything else.
Your scholarship counts towards the total for whichever sport is highest on the list.

Jason Bacashihua was the other should-have-been goalie(although his jumping to the O was more academic-related), and he's apparently still plugging away in Slovakia.

No NCAA team besides maybe North Dakota could fill an NHL-size arena regularly. But the Thomas and Mack Center on UNLV's campus is capable of making ice(they host Disney on Ice stuff). Orleans Arena in Vegas also holds 7700 for hockey.
As far as an arena goes, UNLV is in a lot better shape than Arizona State is--and the arena problem is the big hold-up with a conference taking ASU. So it's "only" a matter of UNLV raising the $30 million or so to cover costs of the progam.

He'll play at least a year of juniors next season. He's not close to being ready for college hockey.

That was my point. They passed on McQuaid for a guy that ended up being Duncan Robinson, and McQuaid did not look like a guy you'd want to pass on last night.

It's not just that Abdelkader has only one 20-goal season, it's that that season came in a year when his shooting percentage was double his career average. He's a 10 goal/year guy that had a very lucky season. Those guys are pretty easy to find.

I definitely can't see Kenny Johnson playing for Michigan next year, and maybe ever playing there depending on who the next coach is.
|14 weeks 4 days ago||College hockey recruiting can||
College hockey recruiting can be a fickle thing. There are not a lot of spots for a lot of kids with not a huge amount of difference between them. Most kids are given a pretty firm deadline--"Accept our offer by Wednesday or it's off the table"--and once a team moves on, odds are good they aren't coming back. College hockey is also different from football or basketball in that not all scholarshis are equal;they can be split into whatever increments a team wants, so by waiting, you might not get offered as much money down the road.

They lost money selling beer the first year because they got approval to sell at the last minute, so the infrastructure was kind of a mess and they way overdid it on security costs. Once they got the kinks worked out after the first year, I don't think they lose money on it anymore.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||If we're talking about that||
If we're talking about that game being played in the modern era, that play probably would have never happened because Michigan would have just kicked the extra point to tie the game and send it to overtime rather than trying for two.

FWIW, here's the price breakdown on tickets for the two-game package. I can't imagine these games will sell out.

But that was great. Bert was already a dead man walking. I think Kingsbury just made sure it will be a closed casket funeral.
