Steve Holtz in ICU with Virus

Submitted by mdurham07 on November 17th, 2022 at 10:53 AM

I knew Portillo was sick a few weeks ago, but I hadn't heard much more about the virus going through the team.

According to this CHN article, Holtz is in the ICU on a ventilator due to a unspecified virus and the team will be "seriously shorthanded" this weekend against Minnesota.

Good thoughts out to Holtz as he battles this virus!

Adults are getting very sick from RSV like I’ve never seen before.  Viruses have become more significant since Covid came around.  No idea what Holtz has but I wish him a full recovery.

Tell me about it.  My 5 years old had RSV a month ago.  She had terrible coughing fits and wheezing in her chest.  The doctor reassured us she would be OK so we quarantined her at home for about a week and she recovered.  Doctor also said that as adults we very likely would not get it.  Well I got it.  It wasn't as bad as COVID but not too far away from that experience.

It's a melange of RSV, influenza A, and COVID. It's nasty. Our family was laid up over a week passing it around amongst each other. My wife's school had 160 kids out last week, and my daughter's school has had three times the normal number of absences so far this month.

Unfortunately it doesn't really seem to matter whether you've had this year's flu shot or the most recent COVID booster.

I thought I read/heard RSV was going through Campus. Stay strong young man. A few years back my 1 yr old daughter sneezed directly into my face when she had RSV....RSV knocked me the F out.

My dad was on a vent for 9 days and we were told that there was nothing more they could do for him, so we elected to take him off and hold his hand while he passed. He sprung up like he was hit with 220 volts. Freaked the bejesus out of us. He lived another 18 days after and did pass away. But yes, the odds of coming off the vent aren’t good. My daughter was a Covid nurse for 6 months and we’ve talked many a times about how it’s usually a one way deal.

Being a parent is terrifying. Our infant had a medium case of RSV that he got over a few weeks ago. He was pretty sick for about a week and a half--the sickest he's ever been--but thankfully didn't require a hospital stay. But a few years ago, a neighbor's infant had RSV and had to be put on a ventilator in ICU. I can't even imagine...

My 7 week old spent 10 days in the hospital with RSV & Rhinovirus back in the late summer/early fall. Just thankful it hit him then vs now considering the stories we've been hearing.

Just needed nasal oxygen until he developed pneumonia in the hospital and they could finally start aggressively treating that. Never had a situation where it seemed very dire or stressful, all things considered. For that I was thankful.

My son was one of those kids who'd get high unexplained fevers and viruses every month. It was awful. One day I walked in his room and he had a golf ball size lump on his neck -- swollen glands from a virus. He had tubes put in his ears, his adenoids removed, etc, etc.. He eventually grew out of it. He got Covid last year and sailed through so hopefully his immune system benefitted from all that illness. It can be very stressful.

All 3 of my kids went to day care as we were both career parents so they had every illness known to man and thanks to them, we did to. Minus Covid I can’t remember the last time they had anything more than a sniffle. My granddaughter who’s almost a year is going through the same thing in daycare. The place is like a Petri dish.

Am I the only one who has no idea who Holtz or Portillo is. A little more info would be appreciated.

Edit. Just read the article this is concerning Michigan hockey players. Prayers up for speedy recovery  🙏🏽

Damn, ICU and a ventilator is scary stuff. Hoping that between his youth and the medical team there he's able to shake this and get off the vent and on the road to recovery soon.

Maybe if a kid is in the ICU with a virus and the team is filled with sick guys they shouldn't play a game this weekend. Its ok to be smart about this stuff even when its not covid

This is horrible news.  Wishing the best for him to make a speedy recovery.  This is an unfortunate reminder that some nasty stuff capable of hospitalizing a young elite athlete is circulating.

I was informed yesterday that one of the large hospitals in Madison, WI was completely full - no room for new admissions.   It's a bad start to the winter sickness season.

It’s a bad adenovirus causing respiratory and neurological shit instead of the usual stomach-bug variety.

Are we going extinct as humans? Is this the end? Every single day it’s another what used to be regular-ass virus that is now just hospitalizing and killing people.

I don't know the particulars here but it's hard not to become friends with a lot of parents in the course of doing this job. You're at a lot of the same events, interacting in the same places, and super invested in the same people. I'm not a reporter and even I know a whole bunch of parents. They're just people, and would much rather you be dealing with them than their kids.

Being on a ventilator at any age is really bad news, and it's highly unusual for somebody so young and physically fit to end up on one.
