Hockey Stuff

Couple things hockey wise.  Adam Fantili was on this college hockey podcast:

Important notes: everybody is on the mend and he thinks they'll all be available this weekend except Holtz, who he says is doing a lot better.  The other notable thing is that Fantili loves Narauto.  If he's inclined to follow the seemingly common two year model for top picks having Narauto around probably makes that more likely.

The other thing is less good, which is that Jagger Joshua of MSU says that a Buckeye was saying enough racial slurs towards him that the game official ejected him, but the league is taking no further notice.  Kamil Sadlocha was tossed in their November 11th game with no other penalties at the same time, so that was probably it.  Big Ten hockey continues to be a disaster.  Even more fucked up is that Jagger's older brother was a Buckeye and a senior when Sadlocha redshirted.

That is garbage. I was starting to type something like that having no place in sports and couldn't even finish the thought - it has no place anywhere, at all.

I have always thought that it's fascinating and incredibly impressive when individuals are able to break into and excel in sports where they are culturally or racially in the extreme minority. Red Wings fan, yes, but I absolutely loved Jerome Iginla both for his game as well has how he conducted himself as an individual off the ice, and it sucked as a kid when I realized what kind of abuse he had to tolerate. Same with Lewis Hamilton - he was never "my driver," but it was impossible to not be incredibly impressed with him, and so disheartening to learn of the ever-present racial taunts he endured coming up through the ranks.

Anyway, rambling now. Sucks for this kid. Hope MSU hockey sucks (mostly) but wish Jagger nothing but success.

Kevin Warren, the current Big Ten Commissioner, has preached about diversity, athletes having a voice and about not tolerating racism in the Big Ten. The fact that he is a black man would lead you to believe he would have voiced some concern about this matter.  Yet he remains silent.  Not the leader the conference needs considering the times.  OSU is just being OSU with this issue.  I wish the MSU player the best of luck the rest of the season.  It’s amazing that the only consequence that may come from such a deliberate act of racism is being tossed from a game.

The official did the right thing in tossing him, but the head official should have reported this to the B1G office (if it wasn't already reported) and the guy suspended for the season.

It may still happen (too little, too late) but was a no-brainer.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like anything additional will happen.

Statement from the Big Ten:

The conference supports the decision by the official to levy a game misconduct penalty on OSU. Due to the absence of indisputable evidence presented to the conference, the conference has not imposed further disciplinary action.

Statement from OSU:

The Ohio State Department of Athletics and the men’s hockey program worked collaboratively with the Big Ten Conference to come to a resolution in response to the allegation of misconduct toward the Big Ten sportsmanship policy.

Ohio State is focused on providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all. The department is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all. Our Buckeye Inclusion committee has done an outstanding job with providing education and awareness across our department, both for students and staff. We are committed to recognizing our remarkable diversity and utilizing our core values to ensure everyone attending or participating in an athletic event feels safe and welcome

Statement from MSU AD:

Michigan State Athletics stands with Jagger Joshua, and commends him for having the courage to speak up against racial injustice. As a department, we are committed to providing opportunities for all student-athletes to compete in a space free from discrimination, racism or hate.
