Chet Holmgren Out for Season

Submitted by uncle leo on August 25th, 2022 at 11:11 AM

Let the discussion begin! Injury was always a concern with him. While this likely has nothing to do with him being super skinny, this sucks. I was looking forward to seeing him.

The injury is to his right foot- Lisfranc. This could be a serious setback for his entire career.

I googled the injury:

A Lisfranc injury, also known as Lisfranc fracture, is an injury of the foot in which one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus. The injury is named after Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin, a French surgeon and gynecologist who noticed this fracture pattern amongst cavalry men, in 1815, after the War of the Sixth Coalition.

While looked at women's feet, he peaked up their skirts!

I generally think of uncle leo as the 'non revenue sports' thread guy. There's plenty of people out there dying to post some Michigan Football related topic on this board. Silly as they may be. Who's carrying the bag for the NBA or a good soccer post?  Who's making a "I'm watching the Tour de France" thread?  uncle leo, that's who.

I was so excited seeing this question that I actually got out of bed, turned on my comp, and responded lol.

I like his game a ton. Big serving lefty that moves pretty well. I think he can win a game or two in the US Open.

I think the hopes of the country rest squarely with Fritz. He's playing pretty well and the hard court is his surface. I worry about his fitness, as he has struggled a lot with the heat in the previous tournaments.

Cressy is someone to watch out for. He keeps getting better.

Who knows with Tiafoe. He's like a different version of Kyrgios; if he's interested and keeps his head, he can beat almost anyone. But he seems to hit this moment in every match where the wheels fall off and he cannot recover.

I didn't recognize the name. But there are many players whose names I don't recognize. I assumed he was down the depth chart or a walk-on. Then the OP provided no useful information about who he is, where he plays or even the sport. I gathered from some other comments that he is in the NBA.

Typically I don't care if someone forgets to label something OT. I don't mind OT posts on the board. But the label serves a purpose. OP intentionally left the label off, and then went out of his way to basically brag that everyone knows that he doesn't label things OT. That annoys me, especially on a post that provided no clarifying information.

More info: Got hurt playing against LeBron in a pro-am game. That will likely spur the whole, "don't play outside of the league" discussion that seems to take place every time someone gets hurt doing something extra outside of their own league.

There's a valid argument to be made at this point that taking time off, letting the body recover, and then getting back into playing shape would help these players get even better and stay in shape for when it matters - the season that helps them draw an income.

Their bodies are at the limit of peak physical condition and break down far, far more than they did in the 80s and 90s. Players didn't need "load management" during the season, because they took time off during the off-season.

On the one hand, you're right.

On the other, he was playing in a pro-am and would have gotten that experience against NBA players in November.

Don't forget - he was famous for crossing over Steph Curry at a camp 2-3 years ago. I'm not sure what he's doing now is that "new" for him.

Freak accident…I think it was 5 other NBA players playing in that game, he was the only one that got injured. Just saw a clip of Cade Cunningham playing against Steph Curry in a pickup game last week, that’s valuable for a young player like Cade. Pretty sure Curry can drop gems and tips on him that he otherwise wouldn’t during a regular season game. 3 of the top players in the league(Giannis, Luka, Jokic) are playing for their countries in Europe right now. Basketball players are going to play in the off-season, whether it’s in Eurobasket or at UCLA playing pickup ball.

He broke already?

I hurt my foot 2 days ago, the muscle just in front of the heel. I was actually researching Lisfranc injuries this morning, not knowing where it was but being familiar with the injury. This is a LONG recovery time. Praying that he can come back at full strength.

The foot is a bitch when it gets hurt.  We ask a lot of our feet and don't think that much about what they do for us until they get injured.  I took a bad spill and fractured two bones and suffered a bad sprain; 18 mos later, I'm pretty good with walking but I struggle to run and change directions like I used to. I'm nearly 40, so I'm not as young, but I couldn't fathom trying to recover from a foot injury and return to an elite athlete level in <1 year.

You say the “muscle in front of the heel”, but if it’s on the bottom of the foot it may be Plantar Fasciitis. This is where the PF tendon starts separating from the heel bone, usually when it's tight due to poor arch support shoes. It’s also called a “Heel Spur”.  Very painful. I had it for a couple years and learned about the wonders of arch support such as Birkenstock sandals.

I got some Birkenstock sandals and I wear them around the house.  They feel strange at first but they will stretch the PF tendon and eventually the pain should subside.  I also had some custom shoe orthotics.  Birk also sells a shoe insert that is useful, or you can go to a drug store and get the Dr. Scholl's inserts that have many sizes.  There are also certain stretching exercises that my help.  There is a lot of info out there.

Probably a 95+% chance he has surgery (or a couple with ORIF and screws or K-wires, then removal of the wires 6-8 weeks later).

No weight bearing for 6-8 weeks, then minimal to partial weight bearing for another 4-8 weeks.

It's going to be next year before he's walking normally. Lisfranc injuries suck and if severe enough (or not treated well enough) can lead to chronic lifelong pain, limping etc.

This sucks for the kid. Terrible injury to get before your first NBA season even begins.

When a tall NBA player gets a foot injury, I always think of Bill Walton - when he left the Blazers for the Clippers & got that foot injury. Was never the same. I wonder if that was Lisfranc?

Sounds like with extreme care, patience & a team of doctors/therapists practicing modern medicine - Chet could make it back on the court. Fingers crossed, he's a true unicorn and seems like a good guy who plays hard!

Who would've thought that a 190 pound 7 footer would eventually get injured against NBA athletes? A whole lot of people saw this coming. People have been saying he needs to put on weight for years and he never did. It sucks because he's a definite talent, but his body was never going to be sustainable in it's current state

Do you really think he hasn’t been trying to put on weight? What about Gonzaga‘s strength and conditioning staff? What about Oklahoma City‘s strength and conditioning staff?

I read something recently that the guy is eating 8000 cal a day but because of a very high metabolism and the level of work he’s putting in. The weight hasn’t gone up yet. It’s not so simple for some body types to just bulk up.
