Trying to imagine what this team would look like with Hunter Dickinson, Caleb Love, Terrance Shannon, Dug McDaniel.  Obviously that's a fantasy, but still...gotta imagine that's a pretty good team.

And 425 more than Michael…

And 425 more than Michael Jordan, 28 more than Scottie Pippen, 161 more than John Stockton...obviously not prolific 3pt shooters, but still amazing to think of Dunc's accomplishment in that context.

Between ticket price…

Between ticket price increases and my new PSC, my season tickets are +9.8% next year.  Of course, Texas, USC, Oregon, and MSU on the home schedule are nice. My guess is that selling the Texas tickets alone (I'll go...just a hypothetical here, though) would probably cover 75% of my total cost.  Still, I have a few "membership" type things in our family budget and it seems like all of them are +10% this year, which stings when you add them all up.

At the end of the day, I…

At the end of the day, I think it comes down to what lights his fire.  I think a CFP national championship was one of those things, but is winning his 2nd one the top fire for him right now?  Only he can answer that, but I could see why it might be winning a SB now that the CFP title was checked.

However, don't discount that he has deep, deep ties to Michigan and he's made them deeper while here with his kids going there, his son coaching with him, etc.  He loves and cares for the program, and there's no such thing as a clean break.  I do think that figures in more here than people may think.  Knowing that Sherrone is coach in waiting may make that easier to stomach, though.

That said, I am braced for him returning to the NFL.  We'll see in days (if not hours)...

Strong defense and team…

Strong defense and team culture can beat so-called "dream teams."  See: 2004 Pistons vs. Lakers

Sadly, this game was over in my mind when I saw the spread earlier today and my first thought was “oh, I’d take Purdue -17.5 all day.” I’ve never bet against UM before but I should have…sadly, that was as close to a sure thing as you get.

I'm not sure if that's a done deal.  I live in Plymouth and haven't kept close tabs on it but I know there's still a fair bit of opposition to the development.

It's kind of funny knowing that you can immediately rule out MSU from this.

Access to the Ravens…

Access to the Ravens coaching tree probably ends with Harbaugh's departure.

Sorry.  They alternate, so it looks like they're only putting out a maize-ray this year.

Rod saw OSU getting cocky…

Rod saw OSU getting cocky about the people they were brining back and decided he wanted to crush their hopes and dreams again.

If he goes out 4-0 against OSU as a key contributor in all those games, he'll be an even bigger legend.

Great news.  He's always…

Great news.  He's always showed up in the big games.  If you look at just games where he got at least 5 touches that were CFP, BIG championship, OSU, and PSU his career stats look like:

  • Games: 10
  • Rushing: 925 yds, 7.5 avg
  • Receiving: 135 yds, 7.9 avg
  • TDs: 9

And that's on an average of 14 touches/game.  If he can rekindle some of his big game magic and put it into a season, I think he can be a 1400yd, 15 TD guy.

I’m paying $95 to be at Crisler with my family.  C’mon, Jim and JJ, give us our money’s worth! 😂

I went with my wife and 7yo son.  We made a memory that will last a lifetime.

We went in Saturday and used our time Sunday and Monday before the game for family activities recommended to us by people on MGoBlog. NASA Space Museum, San Jacinto monument, Color Factory, etc.  Lunch at Grace’s, dinner at The Nash.  It was a nice time.

I have nothing bad to say about the many Washington fans I encountered.  All very nice, all eager to talk football, gracious in defeat, etc.  They seem like good people.

As an aside, I’m used to seeing young kids at Michigan home games.  However, very few were at the championship game (guessing it’s a $$$, school night, late kickoff thing).  My son felt like a celebrity getting tons of high fives for being there. Lol.

I actually hope the MGoCrew…

I actually hope the MGoCrew is enjoying this moment like the rest of us. I know the job of media is to cover these things but I feel like this moment is big enough that it’s okay to revert back to just being a fan for a day.

Sitting in my hotel in Houston full of nervous energy.  Hopefully our players are more relaxed than I am. I could hardly sleep last night.  I want this win so badly, but I’m also insanely proud of this team no matter what happens.

It was 95% Michigan fans…

It was 95% Michigan fans going through ATL yesterday but we spent the day in Houston today and at the Space Museum. The restaurant we went to tonight was probably 50/50 split.  Feels more like 55-45 in Michigan’s favor overall, so lots more Washington fans out than I would have thought but they’re still outnumbered slightly.

All the Washington fans I’ve met are really nice, knowledgeable, and love football.

I read that we are 7-1 in the BGBs. Not sure if that’s true, but I’ll take it!

UPDATE: I just read on Twitter that we are 16-1 in blue pants.

Looks like he only recorded…

Looks like he only recorded stats in 3 games in 2019.  So if he appeared in more, it was literally just to hand off the ball.  That must be what they're going for.  Then count 2020 as covid year and you can get one more year.  Hey, worth a shot!

I can't even fathom trying…

I can't even fathom trying to produce the usual amount of content while going to two cross-country road games like the MGoStaff is doing.  I feel like we need to sit here and just collectively bask in the good vibes, as hard as that is for me to say.  With that said, I'm F5ing like every other person on this board.

I hate the idea of leaving…

I hate the idea of leaving our magical season up to the refs to make a judgment call on "control."

They make the decision 2-3…

They make the decision 2-3 hrs before the game and can't change it once it's made.  I'm almost certain that it'll be closed.

Not sure why he gets written…

Not sure why he gets written off so much as only a ST contributor in the NFL, as I can see him possibly seeing some snaps at nickel in the NFL.  He's obviously not the ideal measurements, but he's got the same listed height as Jourdan Lewis (now in his 7th year!), albeit 10lbs lighter.  DJ Turner is about the same weight and only an inch taller.  Antoine Winfield is only 5'9" and won a Super Bowl.

Maybe it's my Rose (Bowl) colored glasses, though :)

I'm heading down to Houston…

I'm heading down to Houston tomorrow with the whole family in tow to watch this TEAM OF DESTINY complete the work that began when we beat Washington in 2021.  Let's gooooooo

It's amazing how much more…

It's amazing how much more you can see on All-22.  I watched a lot of it and was surprised at how far back the high safety was most of the game. But I can 100% see how it caused some indecisiveness because they did a good time staying over top of the WRs.

I think there was a play 1:30 before halftime where Bama got a big chunk.  Paige was playing 20yds back at the snap and backpeddled to 30 yds.  But he came up and made a great open field tackle that probably saved a TD.  Smarter people than me would know if he could have done that if he played closer, but I think the point was to prevent a big play and he did exactly that.

Also, on the CJ sideline grab, JJ was flushed out of the pocket but he had Morris open on a nice crosser that was an 85yd TD if had 0.5 more seconds to see it. In fact, I saw a few good routes that put the defenders in conflict, even if we didn't pay them off.

On his fumble play, Milroe was scrambling on what looked like an RPO--he had his receiver open if Sainristil hadn't done a good job of disrupting the QB and forcing him out of his plan.

They put a lot of trust on Sabb to make that stick on the Johnson corner blitz.  He slowed down a little to make sure he did it, because that receiver had a lot of room if he didn't.

Lastly, I forgot that we had to run another guy on the field on the last punt during regulation.  Could have contributed to Thaw's jitteryness as the return team didn't look ready.

I feel like in societal moments this big, private industry turns into a public service, so I thank you for your service to the MGoCommunity.

Washington's defense in SP+…

Washington's defense in SP+ is 44th and they're giving up 397 yds/game and 23.6 pts/game.  The closest comps we've played this year are:

SP+

Minnesota (31) -- we scored 52

Wash (44) - TBD

MSU (45) -- we scored 49

Yards

Indiana (394) -- we scored 52

Wash (397) -- TBD

UNLV (402) -- we scored 35

Pts

Maryland (23.3) -- we scored 31

Wash (23.6) -- TBD

Minnesota (26.9) -- we scored 52

Against the 5 most comparable defenses (counting Minn only once), we averaged 44 pts and never scored less than 31.  Of those games, 3 were true road games.  We still averaged 27 pts against the best the best 4 defenses we faced (PSU, OSU, Iowa, Bama), with only one of those coming at home.  Anything can happen in the postseason but I just don't see us scoring less than 30 pts here, so it's a matter of how much we can contain UW's offense.  I'm comforted by knowing no one has scored more than 24 on us--but if there's a team to do it, it's UW.

31-21 good guys.  Defense wins championships.

I say it's 24-21 and then a critical strip sack by Barrett with a couple mins to go gives us the ball in Wash territory.  UW, with the championship on the line, sells out to stop the run on 3rd and 3 in order to get the ball back and JJ pulls it and hits Barner for a rumbling 35yd TD to seal the game.  31-21 good guys. Pure jubilation.

Not to be specific or anything...

Fun fact: we pulled McCarthy…

Fun fact: we pulled McCarthy with 6 mins to go in the 3rd Q.  Washington pulled Penix with about 4 mins to go in the 3rd Q. The measure of how good you are is how few mins past halftime your starting QB plays against MSU, and we won that one :)

Our OC being free to focus…

Our OC being free to focus on scheming and not carry the team & game management responsibilities is a factor these "coaches" seem to be overlooking, and I think this is even more important on a short week of prep.  I thought the gameplan for the Rose Bowl was brilliant.  And if not for some execution issues, Michigan would have looked like an utter juggernaut.

Also overlooked: this is a team of MFing destiny!

The real sticker shock I got…

The real sticker shock I got was from the airfare.  I booked mine before Xmas but was shocked that it would cost $2400 (!) for a RT ticket from DTW on Delta.  I eventually cashed in a bunch of miles for one-way tickets (not even directs!) and then paid for return flights (our group is splitting and going to two different cities afterwards).  After all of that, I got the price down to...$1300ea + miles.  Still oof.  By comparison, I paid $1300 RT to go to Paris last time I went, and Houston is no Paris :)

Fortunate to have gotten my game tickets for face value, otherwise I'm not sure I would have gone.

Also trying to figure the parking situation out.  I originally booked the yellow lot but I'm hearing it's kind of gridlock in/out.  I'm planning to be there a couple hours before the game.

They haven't released the university allotments yet (delivered digitally on Thursday).  I imagine prices will go down when those become available for resale.  My gut feel was that prices would settle out <$1000/ticket a couple days in advance if Texas didn't make it.

I love Joel's level-headed takes on things.  One of the best in the business, and a guy putting himself in front of a mic by himself for 35 mins without wasted time, ramblings, etc. is a serious skill.

Here's my Q on Bredeson's…

Here's my Q on Bredeson's penalty: why was that not a dead ball foul (because I thought Corum already had the first down)?  I thought they were going to give us the first down and then back us up the yardage, but the next play was 2nd down.

I recall seeing 3-4 spots…

I recall seeing 3-4 spots that I raised an eyebrow over.  One was posted here when they spotted it at the 45 instead of 42.  The 4th down Milroe run also looked possibly short but I didn't see them overturning it on review (which they never did).  Bama also had a catch in the first half where the receiver went out of bounds and i thought they spotted it 2 yards favorably.
