Chet Holmgren Out for Season
Let the discussion begin! Injury was always a concern with him. While this likely has nothing to do with him being super skinny, this sucks. I was looking forward to seeing him.
The injury is to his right foot- Lisfranc. This could be a serious setback for his entire career.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:15 AM ^
Man, that does suck for him.
And you were sort of correct in not putting an OT on this because the event was sponsored by Jamal Crawford.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:17 AM ^
Most of the board knows my stance on the whole OT thing- I think it's all very silly. We've covered the pre-season discussion enough and college football hasn't even started yet. If people get confused with this topic, then oh well I guess.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:26 AM ^
What is your take on NIL tho?
August 25th, 2022 at 11:38 AM ^
I have to say that I was confused because I have no idea who Chet Holmgren is until I googled him.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:03 PM ^
He's Mike Holmgren's grand-nephew. O-line recruit from Wisconsin.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:29 PM ^
He's the rare negative-five star recruit as an offensive lineman.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:36 PM ^
He would have more than a lisfranc injury if he played a down of OT for the Badgers.
That was funny. It would be Lucas.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:03 PM ^
I googled him too and I still don't know who he is.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
He's a guy who is out for the season.
August 25th, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
But why do plants crave brawndo??
August 25th, 2022 at 3:27 PM ^
I googled the injury:
A Lisfranc injury, also known as Lisfranc fracture, is an injury of the foot in which one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus. The injury is named after Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin, a French surgeon and gynecologist who noticed this fracture pattern amongst cavalry men, in 1815, after the War of the Sixth Coalition.
While looked at women's feet, he peaked up their skirts!
August 25th, 2022 at 5:34 PM ^
spin your laptop or monitor 90-degrees either left or right, so you're looking at it sideways that's chet holmgren
you can even do this search with the wifi disconnected
August 25th, 2022 at 11:40 AM ^
I generally think of uncle leo as the 'non revenue sports' thread guy. There's plenty of people out there dying to post some Michigan Football related topic on this board. Silly as they may be. Who's carrying the bag for the NBA or a good soccer post? Who's making a "I'm watching the Tour de France" thread? uncle leo, that's who.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:02 PM ^
I'm ready to break down the US Open, but I don't think I'd get a ton of response lol
August 25th, 2022 at 12:23 PM ^
You might get a ton of responses...of course, none of them would have to do with actual tennis.
August 25th, 2022 at 3:38 PM ^
What do you think about an American's chances? Is this Shelton kid legit?
August 25th, 2022 at 10:45 PM ^
I was so excited seeing this question that I actually got out of bed, turned on my comp, and responded lol.
I like his game a ton. Big serving lefty that moves pretty well. I think he can win a game or two in the US Open.
I think the hopes of the country rest squarely with Fritz. He's playing pretty well and the hard court is his surface. I worry about his fitness, as he has struggled a lot with the heat in the previous tournaments.
Cressy is someone to watch out for. He keeps getting better.
Who knows with Tiafoe. He's like a different version of Kyrgios; if he's interested and keeps his head, he can beat almost anyone. But he seems to hit this moment in every match where the wheels fall off and he cannot recover.
August 25th, 2022 at 1:50 PM ^
You can have any opinion on "OT" you want. But when posting someone is injured, especially a week before kickoff you really need to make it clear that its not a Michigan related injury.
August 25th, 2022 at 4:04 PM ^
Because Michigan has so many players named Chet Holmgren?
”OT” should only be necessary in cases of genuine confusion.
August 25th, 2022 at 4:55 PM ^
I didn't recognize the name. But there are many players whose names I don't recognize. I assumed he was down the depth chart or a walk-on. Then the OP provided no useful information about who he is, where he plays or even the sport. I gathered from some other comments that he is in the NBA.
Typically I don't care if someone forgets to label something OT. I don't mind OT posts on the board. But the label serves a purpose. OP intentionally left the label off, and then went out of his way to basically brag that everyone knows that he doesn't label things OT. That annoys me, especially on a post that provided no clarifying information.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:16 AM ^
More info: Got hurt playing against LeBron in a pro-am game. That will likely spur the whole, "don't play outside of the league" discussion that seems to take place every time someone gets hurt doing something extra outside of their own league.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
That's the thing about basketball, they play all the time. That's the only way they get better and and stay in shape.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:18 PM ^
There's a valid argument to be made at this point that taking time off, letting the body recover, and then getting back into playing shape would help these players get even better and stay in shape for when it matters - the season that helps them draw an income.
Their bodies are at the limit of peak physical condition and break down far, far more than they did in the 80s and 90s. Players didn't need "load management" during the season, because they took time off during the off-season.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
Fair comment but if you are a rookie looking to have a strong start, playing against Lebron and others is a good way to get experience. Plus it's got to be just freakin' awesome for a 19 year old.
August 25th, 2022 at 6:00 PM ^
On the one hand, you're right.
On the other, he was playing in a pro-am and would have gotten that experience against NBA players in November.
Don't forget - he was famous for crossing over Steph Curry at a camp 2-3 years ago. I'm not sure what he's doing now is that "new" for him.
August 25th, 2022 at 9:49 PM ^
Freak accident…I think it was 5 other NBA players playing in that game, he was the only one that got injured. Just saw a clip of Cade Cunningham playing against Steph Curry in a pickup game last week, that’s valuable for a young player like Cade. Pretty sure Curry can drop gems and tips on him that he otherwise wouldn’t during a regular season game. 3 of the top players in the league(Giannis, Luka, Jokic) are playing for their countries in Europe right now. Basketball players are going to play in the off-season, whether it’s in Eurobasket or at UCLA playing pickup ball.

Seattle gets its revenge.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:17 AM ^
Feel really bad for him. Maybe the Pistons were fortunate to drop a bit in the lottery and up with Ivey.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:21 AM ^
I actually wanted Ivey before anyone else in this draft. I think he has the most upside.
Banchero will be really good. I'm honestly not sold on Jabari Smith- I watched him play a lot at Auburn and wasn't blown away at all.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:06 PM ^
I'm super-stoked about the Pistons with Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren. It might take a year or two, but they'll be competing for championships soon.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:20 AM ^
He broke already?
I hurt my foot 2 days ago, the muscle just in front of the heel. I was actually researching Lisfranc injuries this morning, not knowing where it was but being familiar with the injury. This is a LONG recovery time. Praying that he can come back at full strength.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:03 PM ^
That's why I've almost never read a sports-related article that referred to a Lisfranc injury without putting "dreaded" in front of it.
August 25th, 2022 at 1:17 PM ^
The foot is a bitch when it gets hurt. We ask a lot of our feet and don't think that much about what they do for us until they get injured. I took a bad spill and fractured two bones and suffered a bad sprain; 18 mos later, I'm pretty good with walking but I struggle to run and change directions like I used to. I'm nearly 40, so I'm not as young, but I couldn't fathom trying to recover from a foot injury and return to an elite athlete level in <1 year.
August 25th, 2022 at 1:25 PM ^
You say the “muscle in front of the heel”, but if it’s on the bottom of the foot it may be Plantar Fasciitis. This is where the PF tendon starts separating from the heel bone, usually when it's tight due to poor arch support shoes. It’s also called a “Heel Spur”. Very painful. I had it for a couple years and learned about the wonders of arch support such as Birkenstock sandals.
August 25th, 2022 at 4:03 PM ^
Yeah, it's the arch and the very point where that muscle attaches to the heel. I had tendinitis in my ankle and my doctor told me to add some arch support. I didn't add much, but I think that's what did it. It put a strain on things and now really hurts.
August 25th, 2022 at 5:09 PM ^
I got some Birkenstock sandals and I wear them around the house. They feel strange at first but they will stretch the PF tendon and eventually the pain should subside. I also had some custom shoe orthotics. Birk also sells a shoe insert that is useful, or you can go to a drug store and get the Dr. Scholl's inserts that have many sizes. There are also certain stretching exercises that my help. There is a lot of info out there.

August 25th, 2022 at 11:23 AM ^
That really sucks for him and the Thunder. Onward with the Cade and Ivey show.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:28 AM ^
There's a lot to be said about durability. Injury can happen at any time. One of the reasons I'm happy to have the multiple QBs we have.
August 25th, 2022 at 11:35 AM ^
Probably a 95+% chance he has surgery (or a couple with ORIF and screws or K-wires, then removal of the wires 6-8 weeks later).
No weight bearing for 6-8 weeks, then minimal to partial weight bearing for another 4-8 weeks.
It's going to be next year before he's walking normally. Lisfranc injuries suck and if severe enough (or not treated well enough) can lead to chronic lifelong pain, limping etc.
This sucks for the kid. Terrible injury to get before your first NBA season even begins.
August 25th, 2022 at 3:16 PM ^
When a tall NBA player gets a foot injury, I always think of Bill Walton - when he left the Blazers for the Clippers & got that foot injury. Was never the same. I wonder if that was Lisfranc?
Sounds like with extreme care, patience & a team of doctors/therapists practicing modern medicine - Chet could make it back on the court. Fingers crossed, he's a true unicorn and seems like a good guy who plays hard!
August 25th, 2022 at 11:43 AM ^
Any relation to Mike?
August 25th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
Who would've thought that a 190 pound 7 footer would eventually get injured against NBA athletes? A whole lot of people saw this coming. People have been saying he needs to put on weight for years and he never did. It sucks because he's a definite talent, but his body was never going to be sustainable in it's current state
August 25th, 2022 at 12:02 PM ^
I'm not sure how adding weight and even more stress to the delicate bones of a foot supporting the NBA-type movements on a 7-foot frame would help, but I'm always willing to hear out a theory.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:08 PM ^
There's a middle ground. Getting up to even like ~220 would help support his frame and prevent injury. Obviously too much weight is just as bad and you get a Zion situation, but having no muscle on your frame was also an injury waiting to happen
August 25th, 2022 at 1:55 PM ^
But again, how does adding weight to the frame improve the load-bearing capacity of the tarsals/metatarsals/phalanges?
August 25th, 2022 at 2:10 PM ^
Maybe improved strength would also improve stability? I really don't know because I am not an orthopedist, but it is possible.
August 25th, 2022 at 2:25 PM ^
I mean strength training is going to improve not only your muscles but also your tendons, ligaments, etc. All of that is going to help your body prevent injury when in motion or when it's impacted
August 25th, 2022 at 6:31 PM ^
Do you really think he hasn’t been trying to put on weight? What about Gonzaga‘s strength and conditioning staff? What about Oklahoma City‘s strength and conditioning staff?
I read something recently that the guy is eating 8000 cal a day but because of a very high metabolism and the level of work he’s putting in. The weight hasn’t gone up yet. It’s not so simple for some body types to just bulk up.
August 25th, 2022 at 7:57 PM ^
I like where your head is at… what if you combined Chet and Zion?!? That guy would be unstoppable! Essentially a taller Refrigerator Perry who is nothing but a mountain of fast twitch muscle, can stroke a three and block shots.
August 25th, 2022 at 12:02 PM ^
My thoughts exactly. I watched the video of the injury.
LeBron did a very normal, physical move to the buck and Holgrem's body immediately said, "Nope".
