I believe if Michigan leaves…

I believe if Michigan leaves, Notre Dame will quickly fill the void, basically just switching situations with the Irish.

Michigan will regret leaving the B1G. I would much rather them stay and fight and work to influence it internally than run to a different conference or, worse, become an independent in a world becoming ever less friendly to independents. Otherwise, ND and the B1G will have the last laugh.

Give me a mid-season…

Give me a mid-season regulation/promotion in baseball.

How many teams a year are basically playing for nothing by the All-star break? Or how about a division like the AL East where the worst team is as good as the best team in another?

Have a cut at the break that puts all the contenders in their own league to play for the Crown and put the leftovers in two or three leagues ordered by record competitiveness. Yeah, maybe people won’t watch the losers play, but I wasn’t going to anyway. I’d much rather see the also-rans playing for something in August and September even if it is a third-tier title.

I saw Cheap Trick play a…

I saw Cheap Trick play a free show on the top of a flatbed truck outside, what was then, Colonial Lanes, before Michigan beat Utah September 2002 or so. The game ended miserably at 10-7 and Cheap Trick was the highlight of the day.

How romantic.

How romantic.

While I’ve accepted the soon…

While I’ve accepted the soon-to-be reality of college football post-season, seeing beaten teams like this year’s PSU and Ohio State getting to play will detract from the season for me. Being and beating the conference Goliath just won’t mean as much, so huge seasonal upsets won’t mean as much. It’ll be huge for the mid-level teams, since they now have a real shot at getting in, but the pursuit of perfection was an essential part of the college game in my eyes. Now the spotlight will be more on the teams on the bubble, and on rivalry weekend, I don’t want national focus on whether a 2-loss PSU can beat a 5-6 MSU. But that’s the kind of game that will put someone’s post-season on the line.

That’s a well-crafted post.

That’s a well-crafted post.

I’m inclined to call it a…

I’m inclined to call it a home run. I think the experience at Baylor is more telling about his ability to coach college ball than his time at Carolina, where he had the cards stacked against him from the beginning.

I don’t see a quick turn around like he had at Baylor, but I could see him being the guy who turns things around if they give him time.

I was angry disappointed…

I was angry disappointed most of the game aside from that glorious first drive.

Chubba Purdy, Logan Smothers…

Chubba Purdy, Logan Smothers? Those sound like AI-generated names.

100%. He inherited a team…

100%. He inherited a team that has gone 44-6 over the previous four seasons (excluding last year’s bowl loss, which was Freeman’s first game as head coach.) I don’t think he gets the first-year coach leeway most coaches get, who usually take over a mess they have to fix. Freeman was given a Ferrari out of the gate.

Today, it could potentially…

Today, it could potentially hurt us. When we have 12 teams, it’ll make it easier in actually getting into the playoff, while potentially hurt us in earning a bye.

It’s very likely Michigan (and other teams) can lose two most years and make it in among the 12. I think it’ll be a boring strategy many top-school ADs will pursue, allowing two mulligans in-conference along with three warm-up games.

Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

I’m pleased with this. The…

I’m pleased with this. The red zone struggles and some questions in the passing game are the reason why they are on the outside (barely) looking in. I think if one of those issues were resolved, we are four.

I imagine the chip is firmly on their shoulders now. If they win-out, they are in regardless. I feel the psychology is better to have something to prove and earn in the next month.

Cool (un-cool?) story bro:…

Cool (un-cool?) story bro: Eddie Brown, the DB who tripped Desmond, was my substitute gym teacher a year or two afterwards. I was kind of clueless about football in third grade, but my friend recognized him, and then we ended up playing basketball with Eddie during lunch recess.

We just asked him questions about what it is like being a football player the whole time, and he incessantly gloated about the intentional trip. My dad was mortified when I told him I hung out with Eddie Brown that day haha.

It’s highly likely the…

It’s highly likely the winner of that game goes to the playoff and the loser doesn’t.

Nonsense. Currently, per ESPN’s playoff predictor, Ohio State has an almost 70% chance of making the playoff with a loss to Michigan and no conference championship game (Michigan has a 52% with a loss and no conference championship game). Both teams very much have a shot at making the playoff with one loss, and style points are impacting that chance positively for Ohio State.

All of Ohio State’s wins have been by at least two scores, and all but one have been won by at least four scores. Their dominance is shaping that belief that they are a top four team even with a potential loss to Michigan. Only Bama had a better percentage to make the playoff with one loss (98%, with Georgia at 70%) while most of the rest of the undefeated or one-loss teams have about a 50% shot at making it in with one-loss. People believe Ohio State is good, and their dominant, trouncing wins are the reason why.

As you said, it’s Iowa’s job…

As you said, it’s Iowa’s job to stop them. Ohio State turned a blowout into a practice that will surely help Stroud with his Heisman conquest. Margin’s matter in the playoff era. As long as a you’re not intentionally injuring an opponent, I’ve no problem with keeping the gas on the pedal. Ferentz could have always requested a time reduction in the game clock if he was unhappy getting trounced.

I’m fine with either.

I’m fine with either.

Darren McCarty here and in a documentary about the Wings-Avs rivalry, would call this a coldcock punch. It’ll be interesting to see the NBA’s reaction after the video release. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get a major suspension and fines.

I imagine there are a few…

I imagine there are a few ways you could start: expanding the definition of what is “unnecessary roughness” and/or more conservatively defining what is a legal tackle, then provide greater penalties for players who don’t play accordingly. Continue to adjust each season.

Take a break from the internet, friend. I didn’t provide any commentary, merely pointed out to another poster who claimed to never see racism on the Meltdown that there were, indeed, racist comments, posting what I found in the last piece.

Relax.

I didn’t read the column and…

I didn’t read the column and don’t really care other than to understand what all the fuss is about. Here’s what I found from a quick glance over the latest meltdown:

- “Coach refused to let his QB win the game pass best receivers. Instead the coach made him run because he is a black QB all coaches make black QB’S run get hurt. White QB’S pass college. NFL win the game. No choice black men want to play n NFL money.”

- “Man I wonder if the OC and DC were black would they still be the coach’s and how the hell is 17 on this team oh I know he white”

Quick glance, so there could be other racist stuff, not including sexist and other stuff. But if that’s it, it’s like two comments out of 50 or 60.

The obvious face mask was missed on Texas’ final drive. Had it been called, Texas would have had a great shot at a TD instead of settling on a FG.

I think it is unlikely, but…

I think it is unlikely, but if it did happen, it would be Texas switching to the B1G, where they would likely make more money, especially if ND joins, than in the SEC with easier access to the playoff. I don’t think it would happen, but that’s the one that would be most likely.

100%. I’m often scheduling…

100%. I’m often scheduling my weekends around watching every big game. I think this potentially could open up my weekends. The most decisive games in regards to who makes the playoffs are going to be between teams with a couple losses (where one more loss pushes them  firmly out of the playoff race). That’s just not as compelling to me. Elite teams are all but guaranteed to get in with a loss or two.

I’m also curious what this does to out of conference games. If I’m Michigan or the like, I can’t see why scheduling anybody with a pulse would be helpful in the playoff race. Why add another tough hurdle when getting out of the conference with two losses probably guarantees entry into the post-season? All in all, it’s hard for me to not see this greatly diminishing the regular season’s allure.

I quit my job at Staples to…

I quit my job at Staples to go to that game. I didn't need a lot of motivation, since the guy I worked for was a miserable Tennessean, who aspired to do greater things than manage a Staples in Ypsilanti, and was happy to take it all out on his employees. I'm certain he intentionally scheduled me during the game, since I told him weeks in advance I would be going. I was a student, and my well-being did not depend on the job. What would make me happier 20 years from now, staying and working a shift at Staples for a few bucks, or great memories in attending a fantastic college football match-up? Now that I'm here, I stand by my decision.

Perfect! I guess I might miss some games on FS1, but it’ll be worth it to go cable-free for a spell. I’ll take solace in not giving a dime to ESPN.

Can you subscribe to the B1G…

Can you subscribe to the B1G Network without getting a cable package? Since most of the games are on network television, and Peacock is free with commercials (or perhaps the games will require a subscription), all I’d need is B1G Network. How I would love not to spend $50-80 a month on cable during the fall.

I appreciate you sharing and am thankful for your advice. I’m just so damn lost with this. I can relate to the distance one bad relationship can make with other family. I’ll definitely try to have a conversation with him next time I visit. Thank you again.

Can I ask if you have any regrets or whether would have done things differently with your dad? Completely understand if that is too personal, especially with an internet stranger. I only ask because my 70+-year-old and me are barely talking, and I know he won’t be around forever. He has done some reprehensible things, specifically to my mother recently, and dragged our family through a particularly hellish year, on top of having some of his core beliefs I cannot tolerate, and he presses them. I’ve tried to work through this with him for years now, but he just digs in deeper into his ways. Even though I’ve put more effort in trying to rectify it than I probably should have, still I worry, I’ll be remorseful we didn’t fix things before he’s gone. It’s hard to stomach a bad ending with my dad who once was also my best friend. /oversharing.

I’ve lived in Texas for 15 years, in several regions and cities both big and small, and was on the road meeting with clients about wherever there were expressways in the state. I’ve had many people tell me this about “a Coke” being a term for sodas in general, yet I can’t remember someone actually using it even once. I’m starting to think it was a thing and no longer is, at least in Texas.
