Hawaiian War Chant Revisited

It’s a long day until kickoff, so it seemed like a perfect day to revisit The Hawaiian War Chant. The original lyrics were composed by Prince Leleiohoku of the Hawaiian royal family.  The song, Kāua I Ka Huahuaʻi (“We Two in the Spray”) was a love ballad:

You and I in the spray
Such joy, the two of us together
Embracing tightly in the coolness
Breathing deep of the palai fern

Here’s a recording performing the tune and original lyrics as a ballad instead of the more familiar, upbeat “war chant” the piece has morphed into over the last century:  link

And a pic of the composer:

closely related and at least as entertaining is the tradition of 'hakas', the synchronized pre-game intimidation ritual on the other side of the pacific.  i absolutely love these and can't imagine the utter chaos that would occur if michigan did this in the toilet bowl in columbus, come november.
