What is Trey Burke's NBA stock?

Submitted by MrVociferous on

Question for the people that follow college hoops closer than I do...  Given all of the glowing reviews and "best freshman PG in the country" type comments, what exactly is Trey Burke's NBA stock at the moment?  And how concerned should we be that he might go pro at the end of the season?  If he goes pro, what are the backup options at the point?

Panicked thinking perhaps…but I don’t think there were a lot of us that thought Darius Morris was going to leave early at this point last year either.

I doubt he leaves. At 5'11", he lacks the size of an NBA point guard. He'll eventually get a chance in the league and he could become an effective back-up PG but I don't see him turning down what could be a very special college career for an un-guaranteed contract.

He can't change being 5'11.  If he wants to play in the NBA, his stock probably won't be higher than it is now, and it's often better to leave early so that scouts can still dream on you a bit (see, e.g., Jared Sullinger).

I don't think Burke should or will leave, but I can see the argument for him doing so.

Beilein has been talking with 2012 PG Amadeo Della Valle from Italy who is playing his first year of high school ball in the States right now, IIRC. He said UM is telling him they don't have a scholarship now, but could down the road.

I'm not saying Michigan would definitely get him, but Beilein has his eye on the situation and is preparing for every scenario.

but not at PG.  Best point guards are Kendall Marshall (who has a turnover problem), Teague (who has looked like the worst player on the floor for Kentucky every time I've watched them), and Lillard from Weber State.

I could see people telling Burke he would be one of the first point guards off the board.

I don't think you can say that his stock will never be higher. He has been great but definitely has room to grow and develop. Plus the team has a chance to be really special in the years to come. Further development as well as possibly being the PG of a final four team would definitely raise his stock.

Not a Scout or someone who knows much about the NBA by any means, but my guess is there's very little chance he goes this year.

His Michigan bio only has him at 5'11, so his height is a huge issue. ESPN has him going in the second/undrafted on his NBA draft profile, so hopefully that means he stays.

At the beginning of the year I was much more worried aout Hardaway leaving. The one silver lining to his struggles this year is that his poor shooting will hopefully push him into staying another year to improve that.

Hmm... So Trey is as tall or taller than Nate Archibald, Calvin Murphy, Spud Webb, Avery Johnson, Tim Hardaway...

Height is a limitation, but not a crippling one if you exhibit outstanding talent. Burke has the potential.

great athleticism except for Avery Johnson who is a heady player. Not to say Burke isn't a good athlete, but he doesn't have elite 1st step to compenstate his height.  If Burke wants to be a 1st rounder, he's better off staying rather than leave after this season.

Don't forget, the opposite of the reason that Darius Morris made the hop is now in effect this year. Several lottery picks stayed in school: Sullinger, Harrison Barnes, Perry Jones III at Baylor and now will be coming out this year  so the draft class is very deep.

Darius Morris and Manny Harris may think otherwise, but Burke will probably stay due to his size like everyone else has said. And to think that of the lineup of Burke- Hardaway- Robinson- McGary- Morgan with Horford, Stauskas and Brundridge on the bench is truly scary.

He won't go. THe main thing holding him back is his height. He will need a few more years to truly develop his skills so that he can be a 1st rounder.

His height is not that big of an issue because his arms are very long for his size. Very solid build with excellent speed and quickness. Has all the intangibles. Good Athlete. Can Shoot. Not to many flaws but he wont leave after this year, After sophmore year hes gone most likely.

Burke, like Sullinger is enjoying his time. Also, neither was raised to chase the NBA. Actually JJ, Jared's older brother did that and it didn't work out. They're both going to enjoy college; I actually wouldn't be totally shocked to see Jared come back for one last year.

I also think Burke may want a year to be "the man," right now it's Hardaway -- or at least going into the season it was. I just don't know if the time is right for him just yet.

Both Jared and Trey have good people around them. I mean they grew up with a coach, Satch (Jared's father) who is well connected in the basketball world. They know that it'll never be like this again. They're also disciplined guys. Satch sat Jared in a State Tournament Final for missing practice or something and they lost. They've had plenty of life lessons. They grew up with Jim Jackson's kid and Archie Griffin's kid...so they've been around people who've "been there." Neither of them is going to rush it.

go by the BTN or ESPN then we are screwed cause they talk him up like he is a lottery pick. I think he comes back but with Earnest Shazor, D- Morris, and Shante Orr I am never happy till I hear they are coming back. It takes only one family member or agent in his ear to make him think he is a sure first rounder.

heard any detailed scouting reports, but during the first MSU game there were several tweets from people like Sam Webb saying the NBA scouts were there to see one person: Trey Burke.

His Dudeness

February 19th, 2012 at 10:32 PM ^

SImply put he is not the best scorer on his own team. That in and of itself will shy away most NBA squads from drafting him. He is and certainly will be the best player on his team at some point, but not this year. He is also very young and is not the most uber athletic prospect I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong I love his game and truly think he should and will eventually get drafted, but if he came out this year he would not be drafted. Most physically un-gifted (relatively speaking obviously) players raise their stock by staying in school and mastering their positions even moreso the specific position of PG, which is the most difficult to master.

Not the best scorer on his team?  Seriously??  He's scoring 14.1 ppg to Hardaway's 14.3 ppg.  A difference of 4 whole points on the season.  And as the season has progressed, he has become Michigan's best scorer -- better than Hardaway.  Get your facts straight.

I don't know if Burke is going or not but I have to think he is going to strongly consider. His skill level is already very good, I don't see it as a reason to stay. The kid is already more mature than Morris or Manny. Burke has already made himself into a really really good player, I honestly don't see him getting significantly better with another year of college ball.

Michigan's recent interest in the 2012 PG out of Nevada, makes me think Beilein is making contingency plans for Burke's possible departure. Just like Hoke offering all those OL's at the end of the recruiting period, was an indication that commitments from Garnett and Diamond were far from certain, Beilein's recent recruiting foray into the desert has raised some flags for me in regards to Burke's future plans.

His NBA stock is 0.  No one's interested in him in the least.  Nothing to see here, so move on.

Did you hear that, Trey?  No NBA team is interested, so you better just get in the mindset that you're going to be at Michigan for the long haul.  That's right, hunker down for 4 years in Maize n' Blue and don't bother even bother ever getting evaluated for any draft until you graduate.

Please?

You know that reminds me I think I just read that somewhere. The NBA actually wrote  a note to Burke telling him that they have absolutely no interest in him until after his senior year and to not even try getting his evaluation.

Nothing to see here Trey just keep playing for Big Blue.

He's 5'11", that right there should tell you his NBA stock will never be THAT high unless he averages a triple-double. I've watched him live a few times this year and to be honest, it would be a bad idea for him to leave. He has a lot of areas that need refining. I'm not knocking him because he's obviously a great player. But, staying at UM for at least his sophomore and junior seasons would do him a load of good.

I highly doubt he leaves though, and I'll go as far as to say he'll be here all 4 years. If he did leave though, I could see him being drafted mid-second round.

Please provide me with evidence why it would automatically be a bad decision for him to leave.

Don't let your affinity for U-M sports distort your view. Individual athletes must weigh many factors -- not just loyalty to an academic institution like U-M -- as they decide what path to pursue in their  athletic careers. We're fans; this is his life.

He's bad at the pick and roll, he's undersized for his position, he still has areas he could make better. Let me put it to you this way Manny Harris and Darius Morris both left early correct? Did either of them have a degree? How's their careers looking right now?

I'm not saying he can't be a player in the NBA later or even now, but it would do him wonders to work in his game a few more years in college. He's not the best player in the world, hate to break it to all you U of M fans. I love him, but that has nothing to do with me wanting him to stay. He's not perfect and I don't want to see him leave without a degree and in a year or two be wondering if he'll even stay on a team.

The NBA is FILLED with talented players, I think Trey would make it, but there's hundreds of guys for a few positions. It would do him good to work on his game in all aspects and just become an even better prospect. Those saying his stock will never be higher don't have a real clue. He's only a mid-2nd rounder at BEST. So you're saying he can't get better than that? I disagree! I think he could become a first rounder.

I hope he stays, but I can see him leave.

He has a lot of upside and it looks like some NBA teams like to pick younger players that they think they can coach up, so I can definitely see him leaving. That said, look at Manny Harris, and I hope he stays at least one more year and play with a better group of talent that will definitely help his stat sheet.

I don't think he'll enter the draft this year, but after his sophomore or junior year I think it becomes much more likely.

He is a bit undersized but that won't hold him back if he has the talent. That being said, I think at least another year of college to refine his skills would help his draft stock immensely. He is obviously a terrific player but he does have areas to work on, especially as point guard is a very difficult position to play at the next level and has a steep learning curve.

At times he over dribbles. At others he can try to force his way into the lane, basically committing himself, and consequently the play/possesion, to a one on one iso drive. When you combine the overdribbling and the forced penetration, he does sometimes get into the lane only to be caught without a good shot or anywhere to pass it. Finally, when he starts to feel it, he tends to drift farther and farther behind the three point line as he takes his shots and sometimes does so as soon as he has an opening and without setting up a play. In short, he is a freshman, an uber-talented one, but a freshman all the same.

Trey isn't half the ball distributor that I expect he will be next season when he better understands JB's offense.  He has absolutely no reason to think about going pro, at his size, until he shows what kind of assist man he can be.
