Came here to say this. They…

Came here to say this. They finished the year third in SP+ (Liberty game probably inflated their ranking a bit, but still) and they have two transfer QBs to choose from. They'll be very good.

Does anyone else have an…

Does anyone else have an extra parking pass available for resale? If so, would be very appreciative.

O I sure did, me and 1.2…

O I sure did, me and 1.2 million of my friends. Honestly one of the more enthusiastic votes I've ever cast.

Also the state population continues to grow. But if there's a reason people are moving elsewhere, it's because the state hasn't built nearly enough housing and rent/mortgages are way too high.

Actually no. The nickname is…

Actually no. The nickname is a misnomer and the state tax burden is very middling compared to other states.

Yeah, but your teammates can…

Yeah, but your teammates can impact your shot quality.

DeJulius was a fairly good shooter last year on lower usage; he was able to get up higher quality shots. Now that he's on a worse team, his usage is up and his shot percentages are down. I think it's definitely impacting him.

David DeJulius is definitely…

David DeJulius is definitely the victim of a very mediocre Cincinnati team. He's second on his team in Bart Torvik's PRPG metric (how many points a game a player creates, relative to a replacement-level player), but at just 1.9/game. That would rank 7th on this Michigan team, behind our full starting five and Chaundee.

Cincinnati wasn't nearly this bad last year, so he probably thought he was heading to a better situation.

Good looking dogs! We have a treeing walker rescue as well (at least that's what we think she is). Don't worry, they get a lot lazier as they age. She still wants a daily 45 minute walk, but after that she's passed out the rest of the day.

Almost always at the ground…

Almost always at the ground level in DC, but those seem to be on the level up from the ground. That's less common, but still happens.

The value figure is based on…

The value figure is based on risk premiums, i.e. the dollar value that people require to take on risk in their jobs. It is not a purely economic number. If you make $50K a year for a 40 year career, you would only make $2 million in your lifetime, but you also provide value to your community, your family, and your friends.

It's honestly a bit shocking how many comments on here are talking about pure economic value. There is an inherent value to human life that the number is meant to capture.

Ya, I did listen to the…

Ya, I did listen to the Planet Money episode, although I've worked on analyzing EPA policy, so I had already been exposed to the "life value" calculation.

I don't agree with the criticism. The moral and ethical issues once you start parsing are way too big, even if you try to just stick to age. Then again, I also take issue with people saying that COVID is mostly killing the elderly and therefore the impact is lower. The life expectancy for an 80 year old is almost 9 years. That's a long time!

The US government does not…

The US government does not differentiate between between people based on age/working status/career, etc. for obvious ethical/moral reasons. A life is $10 million, no matter who it is. If you're comfortable making distinctions that different lives are worth different amounts, that's fine I guess. But I am not.

So many people don't know…

So many people don't know this, but the US government has a figure they use to calculate the value of a life so they can measure the benefit of preventing death (for a proposed regulation, for example). That value is $10 million/life.

Google tells me the Swedish GDP is $556.1 billion in USD. 0.1% growth on that (assuming annualized numbers) is about $600 million. As another commenter mentioned, Sweden has had about 4,000 extra deaths compared to their neighbors. That's $40 billion in lost human life.

So congrats to Sweden for trading $600 million for $40 billion I guess?

Ya, I think stagflation is…

Ya, I think stagflation is definitely on the table. I suppose it's just not quite my expectation at this point.

If consumer spending goes in…

If consumer spending goes in the tank (I guess that's not an if, but more of a fact) and stimulus money can only partially fill that gap (2 trillion isn't even 2 months of normal US economic activity), where does the inflation come from? Medium to longer-term inflation isn't a given either if the fed unwinds things properly, which is admittedly tricky, but certainly can be done. The inflation hawks could not have been more wrong about the last financial crisis.

Don't blame you whatsoever…

Don't blame you whatsoever and I'll likely do the same, but from a policymaker/economists perspective this is exactly what they hope you don't do with your stimulus check.

No, it's patients for…

No, it's patients for confirmed COVID cases: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1105402/covid-hospitalization-rates-us-by-age-group/. Underlying data is CDC I believe.

1% of flu patients need to…

1% of flu patients need to be hospitalized. Current estimates are that 20-30% of COVID-19 patients need to be hospitalized.

It is summer in Australia right now, that is how hemispheres work. COVID-19 is spreading in Australia on about the same exponential curve as other countries.

This is not a seasonal illness and it is not the flu.

Thank you to the OP for…

Thank you to the OP for starting this thread and thanks for your comment about platelets. I used to donate blood myself. Not like clockwork, but whenever it popped up on my radar.

I was diagnosed with a blood cancer about 15 months ago, so I'll never be able to donate blood again. I just did a procedure called a Stem Cell Transplant and for the first time in my life, I was on the receiving end for both whole blood and platelets. I can't tell you how grateful I am to the total strangers that made those donations. It does indeed make a difference.

O wow, thank you for your…

O wow, thank you for your service. The trophy is in the mail.

I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma and I've been blessed enough to afford my medical bills and I'll also be able to weather an upcoming unpaid leave of absence from work financially without any help.

So what I do is, I monitor GoFundMe's for other Hodgkin's patients and I contact the organizer and tell them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Just kidding. What I actually do is choose a random fundraiser every month and donate $25 to a total stranger.

I hope you can reevaluate your life and try to live with a little more compassion.

It seemed to me like they…

It seemed to me like they came out in the second half with the intention to blitz more.

I'm just not sure how you can beat an accurate QB with multiple wide receivers that can take the game over and put up over 150 yards on you. It's pretty clear that Clemson didn't have that much success on defense, but basically no one did all year. Closest was Auburn and they still had 500 yards put on them by LSU. The difference is they got 2 turnovers to Clemson's 0. Also the LSU offense got better as the year went on.

The bigger issue for Clemson was on offense. If you were going to beat LSU this year it was going to be by a score of 45-42, but Lawrence looked very human and completed fewer than 1/2 his passes for only 6.3 yards a pass. Just not good enough.

I'm just going to flat out…

I'm just going to flat out disagree on the "zero semblance of critical thinking faculties" comment.

But where do you need your intellectual diversity to come from anyway? There are many, many websites that provide different viewpoints on culture, lifestyle, politics, sports, etc.. For example, if you wanted or needed a different perspective on national anthem kneeling a few years ago, it was extremely easy to find that on 800 different corners of the internet. Your opinion on that topic might've been informed by reading a particular piece from a particular place (making you guilt of groupthink!), or maybe it was formed as some sort of fusion of different viewpoints. With the diversity of websites that very much exist, if you can't identify someone talented writing from a certain angle, it definitely says something about something.

Which comes back to, why is it up to Deadspin to somehow provide some sort of "full range" of intellectual diversity in a single website? Deadspin may have started as a sports site, but more recently, it combined a few different major topics (lifestyle, politics, sports, dudes getting hit in the nuts; you know, all the important things) in different and interesting ways, with strong voices and talented writers and editors. And people read it and liked it and it made money until some ghouls decided to trash the party. And that's a bummer!

How are you people so bad at…

How are you people so bad at writing message board comments on the internet?

UFR posts are almost completely and totally original content and like 3,000-5,000 words apiece. Ace just wrote a two part Big Ten basketball preview with 3-5 paragraphs on each Big Ten team. Only Unverified Voracity is really a package of content from elsewhere, and there are like 1,000 added value words in each one.

Your comment is demonstrably false! I feel like I'm taking crazy pills over here.

And here we have an A+…

And here we have an A+ example of "groupthink political and social commentary" being used as a stand-in for "political and social commentary that I don't agree with".

May we all be so enlightened as to reach your level of thinking, which I'm sure is unadulterated, pure, and independent.

Interesting on the Green…

Interesting on the Green-Warren to USC stuff. I would imagine a coaching change could shake some things up there though, right?

IIRC, Michigan's recruiting…

IIRC, Michigan's recruiting approach is a lot more complicated than "position coach recruits position player". I think the primary approach is regional (coaches recruit areas to which they have ties, regardless of position), with a certain amount of effort sharing split between the primary coach and position coach.

Is it a bit concerning? Sure…

Is it a bit concerning? Sure.

But Michigan State's heyday Dantonio teams thrived on handsy underrecruited corners that got the job done and beat OSU more than their fair share of times.

They're still in on Darion Green-Warren, 4 star and composite 209 player in the 2020 class. There might be other guys they're in on too, I'm not sure.

Also there's more than one way to skin a cat/win a football game.

Congrats, you win dumb…

Congrats, you win dumb comment of the day.

Deadspin can't produce content without writers or editors. You can't get clicks or sell ads on clicks without content. Do you see where this is going? To think the owners of Deadspin are benefitting here is a real galaxy brain take.

Second, you're giving Brian page views and interactions...on a site that he owns and generates ad revenue from. Again, do you see where this is going? What's your Michigan sports blog? I would love to check it out (that's sarcasm; you don't have a Michigan sports blog and if you did, it would be terrible).

I will miss Deadspin a lot,…

I will miss Deadspin a lot, but I follow the writers I like the most on Twitter, so I'll follow them wherever they go next. For no one in particular, though, I'd like to clear up/address some of the points people are making in this thread.

1. Barstool was/is not more popular than Deadpsin. Deadspin does 3x the traffic of Barstool (see here: https://www.similarweb.com/website/deadspin.com#overview and here: https://www.similarweb.com/website/barstoolsports.com#overview). I'm guessing people think Barstool is more popular because it's a volume issue: Barstool fans are chuds that don't ever stop talking about it.

2. Deadspin was and is profitable. This wasn't a financial issue. It's a labor vs. capital issue, and if you are labor yourself (do you sell your time for money?), what are you even doing siding with the capital? Hell of a way to go through life I guess.

3. Their writers and editors see the traffic numbers on their posts and have said that their non-sports posts were some of the best performing on the site. There are plenty of places you can go for "stick to sports" content. If you don't like how Deadspin covered the world, then maybe it wasn't for you, but I can't think of anything worse than boring coverage that doesn't speak to anyone or stand for anything.

Video embeds on the post…

Video embeds on the post aren't working for me. Is it a problem for anyone else? Instead of the usual embeds, I'm getting just links to the videos on YouTube.

I logged in just to neg you. -62 seemed too high, had to get you to -63.

Congratulations! That's incredible news. Currently battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma myself. Can't wait for the day I get that clear PET, I can only imagine how excited you guys are.

Agreed on the Trader Joe's, although they make them too small.

Anyone answering with a…

Anyone answering with a Chicago-style pizza has invalidated their opinions forever. It's trash, and I was born in Chicago and still have family there. Aurelio's is the best pizza in the Chicagoland area, and it's not particularly close. Other best pizza places...

1. Pupatella in Arlington, VA. Incredible Neapolitan style pizza.

2. Santarpio's in East Boston. Anyone that says Boston doesn't have good pizza just hasn't eaten at Santarpio's yet. Get a grilled lamb skewer while you're there.

3. Grimaldi's in Brooklyn, New York. Original coal-fired oven. I went there extremely hungover one time and saw god when I took my first bite.

4. Frank Pepe's in New Haven, CT. New Haven-style pizza is a top 2 style in the US.

Detroit-style pizza is also great, but I haven't had the chance to try any of the original places yet and only know it from Jet's. Excited to try Buddy's at some point in the future though.

Unabomber a bit too high,…

Unabomber a bit too high, IMO. He was just a sad, lonely man trying to be heard.

You must not follow Brian on…

You must not follow Brian on Twitter, or haven't followed him very long. Cuz, uh, there's some beef there between Brian and that prick.

Anyway, Dave Portney being a Michigan grad/fan easily slots into the top 3 things that embarrass me most about my own Michigan degree/fandom.

Yes, it would certainly be…

Yes, it would certainly be possible.

Will I be doing that? I don't think so, no haha.

I'm using the same math that…

I'm using the same math that Brian is using in UFR. It's the positive points divided by the total points (positive plus negative). So if someone has 6 positive points and 2 negative points, they grade out at 75%, or 6/(6+2).

I LOVE DRAFTAGEDDON (AND BY THAT I MEAN I READ THE FIRST COUPLE ROUNDS AND SKIM THE REST FOR HIGH LEVEL TAKEAWAYS), PUT IT STRAIGHT INTO MY VEINSSSSSSSS

I think it's a bit different…

I think it's a bit different when it's in podcast form. You have to download it and then press play, and no one's making you do either. I suppose the same is true for reading an article, but it's another level removed from the actual blog when it's in podcast form.

Yep, I'm anti-Barstool but

Yep, I'm anti-Barstool but this is spot on. Barstool is an organization that thrives on tribalism, an us vs them mentality. ESPN just validated and reinforced that mentality.

Just because you went to

Just because you went to Michigan does not make you a Michigan Man. Being a Michigan Man means that you have character, integrity, and work for the benefit of those around you. Portnoy has none of those qualities.

I think you'd be surprised.

I think you'd be surprised. I'm in my mid-20s and aside from PMT, I won't touch Barstool with a ten foot pole.

Every anti-Barstool take in this thread is spot on. Their "everyman sports coverage" shtick isn't new, Bill Simmons pioneered it 15 years ago without any of the Barstool baggage (before he too became insufferable). The organization is suffering from founder's disease in the worst way because Portnoy is the world's biggest rod. And I think without changing, they're starting to bump up against the limits of how they can grow their audience. They might continue to grow in the future, but it will fundamentally change the organization. You will say those changes make them worse, I will say those changes make them better.

Contracts do come up for

Contracts do come up for renewal tho...

I think it got greenlit

I think it got greenlit because the PMT guys have a lot of ESPNers in their corner that were willing to vouch for then, while the critical voices didn't come in until later.

I agree that the PMT guys would be better off splitting off from Barstool (as others have said in the thread). PFT has been successful at ridding Big Cat of the worst indulgences of the Barstool brand. But unfortunately Big Cat seems to have a level of loyalty to Barstool that will do him more harm than good at this point in his career.

Going to be interesting to watch it all develop, to say the least.

I disagree. It usually take

I disagree. It usually take Bama backs a year or two to find their footing and then when things clear out in front of them, then they get their opportunity.

But that aside, Bama uses sharing carries as one of their biggest selling points. Damien Harris and Bo Scarborough both averaged fewer than 10 carries a game last year and both crested over 800 yards. They get enough action to signal to the NFL that they're good, while saving their bodies for paid carries. It's a win-win.

I also agree that Solomon is

I also agree that Solomon is probably the right choice

a) Because of the backs on the roster

b) Because of positional value

c) Because of the potential to land a 5 star back in the 2019 class

But I would just like to point out that Harris is getting pretty rave reviews in camp. He's still going to be a beast.
