Remember George Campbell

Submitted by ldevon1 on

I wasn't a member here, at the time (I was spending my money on Scout), but this kid was considered a lock to come to Michigan. He was a high school teammate of Mason Cole, and stud receiver. It's still early, but he hasn't had the impact that was expected of a 5 star top 10 player. I just remember (some people thinking) it being the end of the world when he didn't pick Michigan.

I actually saw him play during Cole's Sr year.  They were playing a team in my city so I went and watched it.  What I recall was that Mason Cole was the largest human in the stadium that day. Best athlete on the field was easily Artavis Scott, also on Cole's team and obviously now a very good player at Clemson.  Campbell looked the part of an elite athlete but didn't do much at WR that day.  Had a ball clank off his hands and made some nice plays on defense as a DE.  At the time, he was committed to Michigan.

I wouldn't knock him just because he didn't contribute his first year. There's plenty of time for him to become a factor at FSU. Campbell always had issues with catching the bell so I wouldn't have expected him to contribute immediately anyway.

Just an fyi..Ermon Lane, FSU's starting safety hurt his foot and will miss the Orange Bowl. They will be extremely young/inexperienced at safety. Should be able to hit some deep balls.

And also because he wasn't doing anything as a WR (19 catches in 2 seasons).  They didn't use him against an FCS team or in ultra garbage time in their blowout loss to Louisville, so he offered to switch to defense.  Once FSU's top few safeties went out with injury, he became a starter.

I remember going with the hype but secretly watching his highlights I wondered about him. He was fast and had long strides but just seemed to have straight line speed. Had terrible hands too coming out of high school. How that makes a kid a five star I'll never understand. Maybe his dad had part ownership in some recruiting sites?

Think he and Damien Harris taught me not to get too invested in distant class football recruting.

Things change.  Especially for high school kids.  Nothing wrong with that.
