Remember George Campbell

Submitted by ldevon1 on

I wasn't a member here, at the time (I was spending my money on Scout), but this kid was considered a lock to come to Michigan. He was a high school teammate of Mason Cole, and stud receiver. It's still early, but he hasn't had the impact that was expected of a 5 star top 10 player. I just remember (some people thinking) it being the end of the world when he didn't pick Michigan.

1. There is general interest in "Where are they now?" articles.

2. This is timely because the individual mentioned is on the roster of our upcoming opponent.

3. There is additional significance because he was previously committed to UM and also because he was a HS team mate of one of our players.

George Campbell actually took a hit in the rankings by the time class rankings were final if I recall correctly. His initial 5 star ranking had more to do with his measurables than anything else - he was known to have issues catching the ball, and I believe that's what resulted in his eventual tumble.

Still was a great recruit obviously with freakish athleticism ala DPJ but also doesn't have DPJ's hands. Think he's a bit taller than DPJ, however.

He was the recruit that pretty much turned me off from recruiting. To go from a Michigan commit to not even considering Michigan all before his senior year was too outrageous for me. Putting hope in the hands of teenagers is a bad move.

Pretty sure he decomitted during the fall  season of '14.  By the time Hoke was let go I think it was pretty clear Campbell wasn't going to be attending UM.

It'd be satisfying to see JD shut Campbell down in Miami, being a decommit and all, but, honestly, I forgot all about this kid. If he plays in the Orange Bowl I'd have 'membered him though.

Losing him and Damien Harris really hurt, but I can't remotely blame them for leaving.

Was pretty clear by the time they de-committed that Brady Hoke was a dying star heading for a black hole.

I remember

  • George Campbell (26 overall)
  • Damien Harris (8 overall)
  • Mike Weber (59 overall)
  • Chir Clark (79 overall)
  • Shaun Crawford (82 oveall)
  • Darian Roseboro (100 oveall)
  • Garrett Taylor (108 oveall)
  • Darrin Kirkland Jr. (168) overalll

All of them were 2014 committs at one point. But the ship started to sink and they bailed. Even still, an impress list of commits to a coach who, you know, couldn't really coach.

The one takeaway from the Hoke era, is that Michigan still resonated with recruits, even when we couldn't point to any real onfield success.

Seantrel Henderson is probably a better example, since we have more pressing needs along the O-line and losing Isaiah Wilson was seen as a blow. Henderson was the #2 prospect in the country per Rivals and named Michigan as his leader early in his recruitment. He eventually ended up at Miami, where he had an underwhelming career and spent large chunks of time injured or suspended.
