OT: MSU FB Loses Two More Commits

Submitted by FauxMo on

After losing Naquan Jones (4* DT) yesterday, MSU has lost two other players today: Jonah Morris (3* OLB), and Abdul Adams (3* RB). They have dropped down to #15 in 247's composite rankings for the 2016 recruiting class. UM's class is now ranked higher by Scout, Rivals, and 247.

Can this all be blowback from the Nebraska game? That seems unlikely. But that's a lot to lose in 24 hours for apparently unrelated reasons.

P.S. I know, we/I should absolutely not care about MSU's recruiting, I sound like they do with Little Brother Complex, etc. I, personally, find this information interesting and think others might too...

However this season turns out he would be leaving "on top".  Even though he might be arrogant enough to think otherwise, he is maxed out at MSU.  Even if he doesn't achieve greater success at his next stop, he moves to retirement with one last big payday and no need to get another job.  If he is going to make a final move, now is the time.  Doors will be closing fast because of his age.

Actually despite the recent defections in the 2016 class, MSU will still sign it's 3rd straight top 25 class. This year's class figures to still be in the top 15 range. They have never done that before to my knowledge. The players that are leaving this year are all from lower rated classes.

MSU isn't going anywhere. They'll take a step back next year but it's still a 9-10 win team. That's why Dantonio isn't leaving.

And I think that's a good thing. Part of the allure of the SEC (before this year) was the high level of competition among its teams. I enjoy competition and I would rather see Michigan square off against a good MSU than a bad MSU.

Agree with the other comment that he's actually had remarkable success with QBs as evidenced by his previous two starting (albeit wobbly) in the NFL.  I do think it's a perfect time for him to leave though, with the graduation of Cook, Burbridge, Calhoun, (maybe Conklin leaves) and the defense has taken steps back in each of the last two years to the point where it looks like it's far from given that their defenses will be great, let alone good.

Think it's likely more related to the end of their respective football seasons and a chance to get their heads up and look around a bit.  Can't imagine that a loss that should not be a loss spurred a bunch of decommitments, may just be something that was building for awhile in all three cases.

Clearly these decommitments are not due to a single loss.  My first thought was that the Dantonio to USC(East) rumor was gaining steam within recruiting circles, but I think Rabbit21's speculation that these guys are simply reassessing after the end of their senior season in high school is much more plausible.

even if Dantonio announced he was leaving. They might well be unrelated to each other, but I do have a theory to throw out.

None of these players likely grew up thinking about playing for MSU. They were sold on the idea that MSU was becoming elite. The Nebraska game just confirmed what people have been seeing all season. MSU is not elite at the moment. With their main offensive weapons leaving and the defense looking shaky, the future isn't as rosy in EL. They're selling hope again and not everyone is buying.

You never know, this could have been Dantonio's choice.  Offers could be pulled for any number of reasons.  Maybe MSU won't have spots open up, maybe they like how other recruits are progressing better, academics, a terrible rap video with the kid smoking weed, etc.

I figure it's not worth worrying over.  They will get some good players regardless, as will Michigan.

From what I've understood MSU's commit policy is not that different than Michigans under Hoke. If you're taking officals, you're not commited. At the same time why not take a few free trips if you're a 17-18 year old kid and enjoy that part of recruiting now that your football season is done?

He hasnt had to endure any real criticism at msu yet. It would take an elite job offer coupled with a bunch of hate mail from msu fans to get him to leave. Unfortunately neither of those are happening right now.

Although I've assumed Dantonio would stay in East Lansing until retirement, the fact that Steve Spurrier's attended two MSU games in recent weeks (he attended UM-MSU and then MSU-Nebraska) is a bit curious.  Is he recruiting Dantonio for South Carolina?

Their defensive scheme just isn't what it once was under Narduzzi and that was proven by Tommy Armstrong on that last drive. Therefore, 2 recruits don't wanna be the next 2 freshmen every commentator is bagging be they're thrown in the fire. Now, the running back...maybe just a coincidence?
