9 weeks 1 day ago Friday

I think they also got a tour of NBC sports studios and a EOS partners, which is an investment company on Friday.  Very cool that the guys are getting a chance to do these types of things off the field.  The UM network is a great thing, hopefully the recruits notice.

9 weeks 3 days ago Progress

Capilla, I think this team is progressing along just as we'd expect, and to be honest games like this and Hobart have exceeded my expectations.  Next year I think we will still be underdogs in these types of games given that we will be playing almost all freshman and sophomores at that point, but the third year in I'm expecting the big jump as we will have two experienced classes in, plus a third group of Freshman.  There are a few Freshman on the field right now who look like they are ready for this level of play, but are still inconsistent and a handful of guys who are ready should not be enough to be competitive against this type of schedule just yet.

Two weeks in a row we had a chance in the 4th quarter to actually beat an ECAC team.  We were right in both games and neither seemed to look like a fluke.

10 weeks 1 hour ago Nice

I'm pretty excited to see him develop once he gets some more talent around him. Watching the inter squad scrimmage last fall it looked like he was easily te teams best feeder.

10 weeks 2 days ago Competition

Not sure if that's the case.  I believe Hobart has been a sub-par faceoff team so far this year, so it may just be that as Brad Lott is out (who was near 50% the last couple games himself), Wylie is facing some favorable competition.  Sounds like we might be close to having two options now, which is huge.

10 weeks 2 days ago Encouraging

That sounds lilke an encouraging first half.  I think Hobart is better than their record indicates.  And for Michigan to do that while a number of their regular players are out is very encouraging.  Hopefully our second half keeps it close and we can take a step forward.

10 weeks 5 days ago HPU

Interested to see how this one goes.  I'm not sure we can say we are favored to be honest.  How we looked against Marquette and how we looked against Army is such a big variance who knows what team will show up tonight.  High Point is inconsistent as well given how young they are.

I'm hoping we can just avoid the transition and make them play us 6v6.  Teams seem to get on runs against us with their transition and I'd like to see us correct that against a team we should be able to match up with.

11 weeks 1 day ago Surprised

I thought this might be a trap game, but did not expect us to play this poorly. Happy we did well on face offs and in goal, but we really struggled even getting shots on cage. Turnovers were up and clearing below 80% so maybe that contributed to the shot problems. Hopefully the young guys are just experiencing some inconsistencies as they grow.

Also really surprised by Marquette given how well we did against them in the scrimmage. Maybe it's good news for us.

11 weeks 4 days ago Maybe not

I'm not sure the law of large numbers applies here. The law of large numbers needs the players to be chosen randomly. The players are not really random. They are genetically bigger, faster, stronger, competitive, and probably testosterone driven than most of the rest of us. If sexual orientation is based on genetics as many argue, we are looking at a portion of the population that shares quite a few genetic traits and probably doesn't represent the full spectrum of genetic possibilities.

Likely there have more than a few though.

13 weeks 2 days ago Game

Watched the 2nd half, and it looked like after Michigan went down early in the 4th they upped the pressure and that led to BU running away with it.  Watching the offense, it looks like we still don't quite have the athletes to break down the defense 6v6 consistently.  I saw a lot of shots running away from the goal, forced feeds and shots from far out, which shows me that we're still outmatched physcially.

Kyle Jackson did some nice things, and the man-up looked to at least generate some looks. Lott looks like an upgrade, although it seems BU adjusted to him by the 4th.

14 weeks 11 hours ago charge and block

I think both the charge and block calls need to go as they stand now.  Taking a guys legs out shouldn't be allowed, but basketball is the only sport when a defender gets a foul for being in the offensive players way.  Just man up and let the guys play.

Those two calls turn most pickup basketball games into a jerry springer drama fest.  Ruining the game at the grass roots level and encouraging a culture of unnecessary drama.

15 weeks 1 day ago face offs

Heard we still had trouble with face offs. Anyone know what the deal was with brad Lott? He wasn't on the inactive list the team twitter account posted yesterday, so I wonder if he is low on the depth chart or was suspended or something.

15 weeks 5 days ago wow

I would love to see this happen.  Having two traditional powerhouse programs in a league associated with the midwest would really help legitimize B1G lacrosse and help the game expand beyond the east coast, both of which will help Michigan get the lacrosse recruits they need and make them a better know commodity on the east coast.  Of course that will make it pretty difficult for Michigan to compete for conference championships, but in the long run should be a good thing.

16 weeks 5 days ago Defense

Defense I think is more correlated to athleticism, size and effort and less correlated to skill, so it seems intuitive that it wouldn't leave you. Your opponent could get hot and make lots of shots in a row, but if they are all contested, you are getting blocks and steals and not allowing drives, I think it is less likely so. By being a good defensive team, you can get the opponent out of their game by forcing them to take bad shots, hurried shots, etc and that doesn't really depend much on luck but more so on effort and athleticism.

There would be variance in the shooting percentage of your opponents as they have good or bad luck from time to time, but forcing them into harder shots via defensive effort seems like something you can control. And when the opponent consistently takes harder shots, it makes it much less likely they will catch on fire offensively.

20 weeks 12 hours ago Punts

I thought Hoke said returning kicks, as is in kickoffs not punts.

I'm not sure I'd want Denard returning punts if his grip isn't strong enough to throw the ball.  Could make catching the ball and holding onto it tough.  If he muffs a kickoff he will have time to just pick it up before defenders get there.  But not on a punt, they will already be there, and punts are trickier to begin with.  You want experience and sure hands to return punts.

22 weeks 4 hours ago Team rules

Alcohol, even if you are of legal age, often is a violation of team rules when you are in season. I don't know the football team's specific rules though so who knows.

And that was a very well written apology.

28 weeks 1 hour ago Tough schedule

Even new program high point could be a challenge. They tied NCAA tournament team Colgate last month in a scrimmage. Scrimmage yes, but sounds like they've got some talent.

Having watched the intra squad scrimmage, michigans offense should give them some opportunities to pull off some upsets this year. The defense is very young, and it may be a while before they play together as a team defense, so until that happens may we have trouble keeping pace with some teams. Hopefully that happens by the end of the year in time for the UDM game.

28 weeks 1 day ago Size

Last year had 8 games, so they either had to put 8 small tickets on one "sheet" or 4 big tickets on 2 "sheets". This year we have six games, which fits on one sheet but with smaller sizes than last year.

28 weeks 2 days ago Maybe not

Devin took a while to get going today. With no practice he may not have gotten going last week.

28 weeks 2 days ago Gardner

He makes such good decisions to pull it down and run or to scramble. Gotta believe he starts next year.

37 weeks 3 days ago Maxwell

Come on guys, give the guy a break, remember, he was groomed for this..Ha!

37 weeks 5 days ago yeah buy

Lebron and the president could tell you who he is...

37 weeks 5 days ago Great question

I think we've got to play a possession game, and shorten the length of the game overall.  Use the full playclock.  Knowing that bama will be heavy on running the ball, they should use up a lot of clock as well.  If we can get a few key stops and use up some play clock, that will give us a shot.

Offensively I think we've got to find a way to get Denard loose.  Bama has never seen a Denard like QB, and if we can find ways to get him loose and get them guessing and "thinking" it will really open things up for us.  So to do that, I'm thinking we need screens/draws to slow down their rush, attempt some long passes to keep them from loading the box, and try to get Denard to scramble when the first or second read isn't there.  I'd even consider calling some designed scrambles where we send guys deep to open up some space and Denard delays his run.

37 weeks 6 days ago Interesting

Interesting hire, glad to hear he is a great culture fit and excited to hear more about his philosophies and see what he can do.

40 weeks 1 hour ago 2013-2014

Quint kessinich said that JP was "killing it on the recruiting trail" with regard to the 2013-2014 kids on one of his ESPNU broadcasts during the NCAA tournament. It won't be long before we are competing for conference titles if these classes are top 15.

40 weeks 2 days ago Lacrosse

Curious, what kind of lacrosse stuff did they have? Any helmets or gloves?

40 weeks 3 days ago Tires

Nothing is more important than snow tires in the winter. I have driven sports cars basically every winter, and with snow tires I never once had an issue, and always felt more in control compared to driving my wife's SUV with regular tires.

40 weeks 4 days ago Team rankings

Would be interesting to tie a team ranking into this. So if Alabama returns 40% of last years #1 defense and air force returned 40% of the #85 defense (or whatever it is) Alabama would show as returning more.

40 weeks 4 days ago pack it in

I think we are talking about 2 different things here.  We are talking about putting all 6 defensemen 10-12 yards from the goal, or putting all defensemen like 5 yards or less from the goal.

If a defender is sitting 10-12 yards out and not pressuring effectively, a good shooter will easily put it past the goalie.  All you need to do is have enough velocity that the goalie can't react or shoot around the defender (use the defender as a screen) and surprise the goalie.

If we put all defenders 5 yards away, that would mean the offensive player would be essentially trying to put the ball past 7 goalies (ie shooting through the trees).

In either case, though, if the defense isn't pressuring the ball, under the new rule this wouldn't constitute stalling.

40 weeks 5 days ago Pack it in

We tried that numerous times with my high school team for end of game practice situations. Rarely worked with a decent shooter, which was not what we expected. And it wasn't defenders moving out of the way. Maybe d1 defenders will be big enough to truly fill the whole cage.

I also don't like the idea of defenders being coached to take shots in the chest. Once the first kid goes into cardiac arrest because the coach made him jump in front of shots without the proper chest protector, there will be some serious uproar.

40 weeks 5 days ago Face offs

I don't like the rule of changing it to 12 inches away. Would completely change the skill of that position and make it more like face offs in hockey. Basically just a scrum. Part of what makes lacrosse unique is that teams can go on runs spurred by face off dominance.

I think the shot clock rule is a good compromise. With it coming after the stalling call, it gives teams a bit more time to be patient. It would be good if we could get back towards two way middies. All that subbing after every possession change doesn't help for the casual fan.
