I found this quite amusing:

"You tell the SEC when they can learn to read and write, then they can figure out what we're doing," Gee said, when asked by a questioner how to respond to SEC fans who say the Big Ten can't count because it now has 14 members.

Although I think the majority of Gee's comments are a bit inappropriate for the national media, I did find this statement to be hilarious. Kind of a cheap shot but not bad enough for an sec rebuttal. The sec knows what they are good at. Academics... Just not one of those things.

I agree with you on this, to an extent.  I think he was playing to the crowd a bit, and I found it funny.  But he did show a bit of malice towards a specific group of people, moreso than I would be comfortable doing as the head of a public entity.  If he was the CEO of a private company, I'd think it was 100% funny.  Not so much when he's the head of a public institution and being derogatory towards a religious group.

(Speaking of religion, there is a separation of church and blog rule, so you'll want to remove your avatar.  Also, no speaking of religion.)

The guy is an asshole and ohio state fans should feel humiliated that their president would make comments like those in a public forum.  You want to say stuff like that in private, go ahead--only the people you are talking to will see you are a jerk.  You say stuff like that in a public forum when you represent a university, and you are way off base.  How would you feel if Coleman went around dhooting her mouth off like Gee does?  Would you admire her candor?

It is not a matter of political correctness it is a matter of bigotry.  I am not a catholic, hell I am not sure there is even a god, but singling out a religion when you are head of a publicly funded university you should just close your mouth about other peoples religion.  What would he have them do 4 year bowl ban and 40 less scholarships because the university leadership covered up the crime?

This is pure gold, aside from the religion part, which I don't particularly care about but could be offensive to some. He basically rips Notre Dame and the SEC, but looks like an ass doing it. It's really a double win for me. It's almost like we get to have our cake and eat it too!

Can anyone explain to me how this guy is still the head of a major public university?  He walks around with his damn clown shoes on constantly, and all he gets is a "remediation plan"?

I do find what he's saying to be humorous, but he always opens his mouth at the wrong place at the wrong time. If you hold those opinions, fine. You're entitled to them. But you're the head of a major public university. Act with a little professionalism when you're out in public.

Whether or not I'd be a biased OSU fan, I'd be embarrassed to see my school president saying things like that. I'm sure the school has its fair share of Catholic alums/donors. Now they're sitting there wondering if they want to donate to a school that has a jackass like this guy running the show.

I gotta say who cares. So some private meeting has now been made public? He was making some jokes, its not 100% kosher, but come on people have some fun.

I hate some of this stuff, including things like the Hoke chicken comment or other things said at a press conference. If people cannot be honest at times, then all you get is boring press conferences and prepared statements.

As a Catholic, I think it is completely inappropriate to take this kind of a cheap shot at anyone's religion.  I don't think he would like if someone said "You can't trust the Mormons because they have multiple wives."  Stereotyping people based on their religion isn't cool.  And I dislike Notre Dame strongly but this is too far

Count me in the group who isn't offended (because I'm not a part of any group involved) and who finds any jab at ND in good taste but thinks this is a really dumb thing for him to say. I would imagine Ohio has a large Catholic population who probably didn't like that.

Maybe I'm missing something here as folks seem to be really offended at what Gee said about Catholics.  What exactly did he say that was so terrible?  In bad taste, improper given his position, etc...yeah, get that...but the outrageous comments were what exactly?
