Losing to Toledo

I remember App State all to vividly. And I was in shock when Michigan lost to state on a disaster of a punt attempt. But the one that I felt I was at my personal all time lowest was when Michigan lost to Toledo. Extremely abysmal performance.

The most angry I have ever been was last year at the horseshoe. As a defensive coordinator I know JT was short.

Welcome DPJ.

Can't say to much about his game. Have only had the opportunity to watch him live in action a couple times this pat season. However, I did get a chance to talk to him and stand next to him last May when he attended the prom at the HS where I am currently employed/coach. I'm a dead even 6'2". He was at least 6'2.5" in the spring seeing as how he was a bit taller than myself. Not quite as tall as a say a Donnie Corley was the year prior, but pretty close. Freakish athlete too. Real excited to see how he develops over the next 3-4 years.

As previously mentioned the key to the game is stopping Barrett. We have the D to contain Weber. I believe we can do a solid job with Samuels as well (he'll be good for a couple big gains). But consistently throughout the day Michigan will get OSU in 3rd and 6 - 3rd and 3 situations. I'd OSU has success on those consistently throughout it'll be on the legs of Barrett. Likely towards the end it'll be nearly 85% of the work.

As a HS DC I've noticed it a bit before in the past. I have always been for having the ability to go uptempo. Just like anything it has it's time and place. Some games I love it. Others you just want to eat clock or help out your own D by slowing down.

I've found that at the HS level when you implement an uptempo offense, particularly a spread uptempo offense, you end up spending more and more practice time on O. Naturally that means less time for D, unless of course you are fortunate enough to have the numbers to have both sides work autonomously from one another. Less work on D means less variation and ultimately less options. I'm sure that is just one of many reasons. In my experience this has certainly been a factor.

Well when no one is aloud to go high anymore you kind of have to go somewhere when you are a DB who weighs 190lbs vs a Tackle tipping the scales at 315lbs.

Given the disparity between the two players I think this is just something that happens. Hopefully He can rehab and come back within a year.

I hate to say it but more of these kinds of injuries will happen now because no one can hit anywhere above the waist anymore without being ejected.

I have to say I was most impressed with the O line. Some of those holes were enormous. Especially on any misdirection/counter plays. Enormous holes for the RBs. Couldn't have been much happier with the blocking, subpar comp or not.

Prep looked good tonight,

Prep looked good tonight, though against a far lesser opponent in Thurston.

Offense is very good. Uses tempo effectively. Defense is solid, although struggles to stop the run at times.

On a side not I personally find it crazy that Pat Fox complained so much about his Catholic league opponents... They have a solid team that could and would be able to compete. They wouldn't be near the top but they could in fact compete.

Loyola made the same argument 3ish years ago and has far less students. Part of the deal when you are parochial school in a parochial league.

Off topic, but I'll never

Off topic, but I'll never really understand swimming. What is the point of swimming all these crazy strokes? It's like being rewarded for inefficiency. Are track athletes asked to run backwards? No. So why would swimmers technically compete in anything other than freestyle? Could do various lengths/distances just like track... But what is the purpose of all the different styles? To a novice it seems like a waste.

I've been extremely busy and out of touch with anything other than HS football lately... Are Ichiro's 3,000 hits all Major League Baseball hits? Or did they count his Japanese mlb hits as well?

As a major leaguer he sure was under appreciated. But I think fans have been conditioned to ignore pure volume batters. Very Ty Cobb like (who played in the dead ball era). Not a ton of power but always hit for a very solid %. Congrats to Ichiro.

Right now I doubt Peters is

Right now I doubt Peters is even in the convo. Since there is depth, better to RS him.

O'Korn sure is a hit or miss. I agree 100% with that point. I guess my argument would be that do we know the other two aren't?

We've seen Shane in limited action (although never under Harbaugh). We've seen Speight again in very limited action. Neither blew me away with moxy. Check down specialists that were limited physically and seemed incapable at the time to make the big play.

There are a whole list of reasons that could be the case but at least we know what to expect from O'Korn. He takes risks. He's up and down. He takes chances. With a D as good as ours is pegged this would be the year to experiment if we so choose. Should have that ability given the quality of the D.

Sent from MGoBlog HD for iPhone & iPad
O'Korn for reasons I'm sure

O'Korn for reasons I'm sure previously mentioned - he's more mobile. I still think that will be needed to a certain extent in our O.

I was a believer that Speight was going to be a very solid QB here. He had the height and seemed to have an okay (although limited) arm. To a certain extent he seemed to get the Shane treatment a bit. Seemingly minor development for a year or so there.

I would feel confident with either. Speight would likely take less risks but O'Korn will make the bigger plays. Edge - O'Korn.

I've always thought based on the rankings that Espn grades on pro potential as well. If you have the tangibles they give you an edge.

I'm surprised JDP isn't higher based on that same premise. Maybe not as tall as the extremely freakish CJ type receivers but has all the frame and ability of a very solid college player. Very Funchess like dare I say - minus an inch of height. Def has pro ability

I'm not really surprised

I'm not really surprised about the J. Lewis commentary or the guards. Also not at all surprised about the backers.

As a HS DC I dislike complaining about backers. Very difficult role. Arguably even more responsibility now in a base 3-4 look. Now an odd guy but it really means we have to recruit the right balance. I feel like we have had okay run stoppers, but looking back ten years or so most of our LBs have lacked elite speed/size for the position. A lot of players have transitioned to that spot as a junior or senior but we haven't had a guy who developed from little on in the middle that stayed there. That's my major gripe I suppose. Not uncommon though. Many programs do not.

My hope is the line play is so solid that we can once again hide the limitations of the second level.

Same day as HS football here

Same day as HS football here in Michigan. Crazy to think they actually give HS students 2 less weeks of practice time to prepare than collegiate athletes.

You could easily make an argument for both sides here, but when it comes to player safety and practicing such it really seems counterintuitive.

I am talking extremely small

I am talking extremely small scale and local but.... My HS boys soccer team suffered 3 concussions this past season (fall 15) alone. Girls soccer had 2 concussions this spring, while football only had one concussion last fall.

Hell our basketball team had 2 concussions this year. I personally feel that how much emphasis coaches place on safety certainly matters. The state's 'preventative measures' make it difficult though since you legitimately are allowed 1 day of full contact before most HS teams have some kind of an inter squad scrimmage.

Was bragging non-stop about the stadium project to a bunch of big time coaches. Was told by Tom Bolden he was doing the same thing at the Nike coaches summit in Beaverton, OR.

Sweet if you are the coach... Probably not as sweet if you are a taxpayer. But then again in TX you may end up getting your money's worth.

Just cater to the SEC. The NCAA should really look to investigate itself. Despite the fact that the institution has helped collegiate athletics grow? Rarely can you find examples where it had 'helped' the collegiate athlete. Such a double standard.

Eventually teams will leave and the NCAA will crumble. It's inevitable.

Very true. Of course there is still Hank, David Allen Coe, Charlie Daniels (kind of) and a few others as well that all were kind of outlaw storytellers.

Everyone has their music. I listen to just about anything other than screamo stuff and techno. But for me personally it was Johnny, Waylon, Willie, Merle, Kris, Ray Charles, Dylan, Lightfoot and a few others. Things my grandfather or dad would listen to. Johnny was always my personal favorite, but Merle had a few songs I particularly loved. Mama Tried, Are the good times really over for good and Poncho and Lefty & Okie from Muskogee were truly classics along with many others.
