10 and 2 with losses to MSU and OSU. I do think that with our returning talent and proven coaching staff, that early part of the schedule becomes alot more doable to run the table. IF Hoke returned, I would have said 7 and 5. Other coaching staff, probably 9 and 3.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
I think the losing to MSU ends (quarterback caveat applicable). I don't know about Ohio State, though, with what they're returning. Anything can happen at home, though.
All that said, I expect a trip-up early on, so don't misinterpret me as predicting a playoff berth.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:09 AM ^
I agree with the home statement. It is good that finally we have MSU at home. Though, going forward, unless there is another scheduling snafu, it seems like both OSU and MSU will alternate home and away in the same years. I'd prefer it if they were not synced, and we had MSU at home and OSU away, and vice versa the next year. It gives us a better chance of one more win each season. With that being said: Harbaugh.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:16 AM ^
MSU returns a solid core of players still, it will be a tough game and I feel like they will still have an edge over us. It is at home (finally) which helps a lot but just dont quite see it happening
January 13th, 2015 at 10:48 AM ^
The most important point for me is Cook is bypassing going pro (1rst or 2nd round pick) while ,at this moment, we will have an unproven QB. Quite the dichotomy, especially with their passrush and Calhoun returning.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:01 AM ^
The OP has the B1G championship game on our schedule, so we are going to beat MSU and OSU
January 13th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
This seems about right. Roster is probably 7-8 Ws (last year too). Poor coaching, tough schedule and you get 5 wins. Good coaching would mean 8-9 wins. Great coaching...

If we have halfway-decent QB play, 10-2 is definitely obtainable. If we don't...not going there

I agree with you about Utah. I cannot stand how we open on the road and at night on Thursday of all times. Yes, the whole nation will be seeing us since we will be the prime game, but come on. At least schedule something like that later in the season.

FIRE DAVID BRANDON!
January 13th, 2015 at 10:50 AM ^
I think we show "newness" against Utah and do not win that game on the road...we then get hot and win everything until our Arch rivals...in an epic game, our QB doesn't quite make it happen and we barely lose..... setting up 10-15 years of epic battles between them and us....Harbaugh will make things happen much quicker than anyone thinks....remember Hoke did not leave the cupboard bare!

Looking through my maize and blue color glasses, 15-0. You should never go into a game or season expecting to lose.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:02 AM ^
It's called being realistic.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:10 AM ^
THe players should go into the season going for 15-0. The posters on this message board should certainly attack all their actual endeeavors with a similar zest and confidence.
But we are discussing this as fans; our confidence has no real impact on the team record.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:39 AM ^
I'm thinking 10-2 but I believe the story of the season is going to be wins over our rivals. And the amazing thing is that we have almost no seniors next year- basically 2 on offense (assuming Miller and Glasgow hold on to their starting spots) plus a couple of half starters/contributors and on defense, just 3 starters plus a couple of non-starter contributors.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
9-3 with losses to Utah, Penn St and Ohio St. Hoping for 11-1 but im trying to be honest with myself.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
I feel like there may be some early season losses as there are growing pains with new teams and coaches but everything starts to come together in early B1G play. The pieces are there to have a great defense and if a QB can emerge over the season the team should be decent come November. If Harbaugh can tap whatever Hoke did in the OSU game, I think MIchigan has a shot there.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:09 AM ^
This. We'll be better in November than we were in August.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
January 13th, 2015 at 9:40 AM ^
We beat OSU.

January 13th, 2015 at 9:42 AM ^
Think Sparty and one other will give us two losses. If Utah can sort out what seems to be some internal division, they'll be very tough to beat there.
Don't like the Minny game either. PSU might be tricky. One of those might be another loss.
But we'll beat OSU. Even if Tyrone Wheatley Sr. has to suit up wearing his kid's uniform...hey, wait a minute...
January 13th, 2015 at 9:43 AM ^
I'm still seeing a lot of toss-up games. Maryland, Rutgers, PSU, Minnesota. Is BYU's QB coming back? He was really good IMO. Also a toss-up.
IMO it all boils down to QB play. If the offense is no longer the turnover machine it was last season then we're looking at a winning season (8-4 or better) , bowl game, possible victories over MSU & OSU. If not... welp.
January 13th, 2015 at 11:04 AM ^
If you go by recruiting rankings none of those should be toss ups. The big reason they were toss ups under Hoke was poor coaching/player development. There might be some growing pains and Harbaugh probably isn't going to be able to wave a magic wand with regards to player development, but I'd like to think that by year 3, if not year 2 a lot of what you consider toss ups will be penciled in the W column.

January 13th, 2015 at 9:45 AM ^
I think we will drop 1 non-conference (looking at Utah), lose to MSU and OSU and one more infuriating game that we should win. That hurts, but I think it's realistic.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:49 AM ^
If there's one thing I definitely see ending under Harbaugh, it's losses to teams that are overmatched. Unless you mean a close game against a respectable opponent when something crazy just happens late in the game, that I can see.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:46 AM ^
Since I am a Expert and so are you...My thoughts are 9-3. Losses to Utah, Minnesota and either MSU or Ohio St. I'll go out on a limb and say they beat either MSU or OSU..but not both.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:25 AM ^
Pretty much sums up my thoughts.
January 13th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
is coming home; honestly think we'll do well enough to survive the OOC sched (with Harbaugh keying on NOT losing his first game, and BYU being the primary potential hiccup thereafter); think the MSU, PSU and OSU games will determine the season, as they have in the past; reasonable to expect to beat at least one of those teams (despite hoping for all 3, of course)... so I think we come in at 9-3 too
January 13th, 2015 at 11:27 AM ^
January 13th, 2015 at 9:46 AM ^
I think 9-3 is a pretty good, if still optimistic, bet. That breaks down thusly:
- Winning both at Utah and home vs. BYU will be difficult, so I expect us to split those
- I think we will pull off one major upset (OSU or MSU) but not both.
- I expect us to drop one more road game (Minnesota seems the most likely)
That's assuming we sort our QB situation out, of course, but I'm confident that the vast upgrade in QB coaching and offensive scheming will pay enough dividends that our QB play won't be the disaster it probably would have been had we retained the old staff. I don't expect miracles, mind you, just solid play. We'll probably run the ball a lot anyways.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:47 AM ^
I believe this will be very similar to Brady Hokes first year where he inherited a veteran team that RR finally established. Just like Hoke, Harbaugh will enjoy experience at arguably the 2 most important position groups on a footbal team: OL and DL. I feel the OL especially will take the biggest jump forward and our ground game to finally take off and take the heat off the most unknown, variable returning position, QB.
Our run game and veteran, solid defense overall should allow Harbaugh a successful first year - im going with 9-3. If Harbaugh and the staff are overall as good as advertised, and Harbaugh works his magic on Speight and/or Morris, this could be a 10-2/11-1 team. Hate to use the phrase 'manage the game', but the QB just has to not lose it for us. No silly TO's, don't force the issue, and don't be afraid to throw the ball away if nothing is there. Have to split at home with OSU/MSU though, which definitely can happen, and i think will happen.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:53 AM ^
For the purposes of your "told you so" post a year from now, will you be taking credit for any of the records you mention here (9-3, 10-2, 11-1)?
January 13th, 2015 at 9:56 AM ^
Yup, I'm predicting something similar to 2011 as well. The program was running down somewhat then Hoke came in and with the energy of change and a new coaching staff, the team excelled on the field. I feel that 2015 will produce a similar result. The negative energy surrounding the program has been building over a few years, now a monster hire at HC comes in and I'm expecting an immediate difference.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:48 AM ^
And we should be happy and appreciative if we get that.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:48 AM ^
January 13th, 2015 at 9:48 AM ^
I expect 8-9 wins. All things considered it is a favorable schedule except for the tough non conference.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:49 AM ^
All the games.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:51 AM ^
We'll get a win against OSU or MSU. 9 wins is my starting point. I think the team plays with new energy and determination this season, much like with Hoke's 2011 season. That's why I'm leaning toward the higher end of the win count.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:52 AM ^
Go bowling and come back in 2016 with guns blazing.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:53 AM ^
OSU and MSU will be tough but I believe we can run the gamut as we have those at home. My prediction is 12-0! Hopefully, we can dig up this thread in December.
January 13th, 2015 at 9:53 AM ^
I predicted something like 9-3 or 10-2 for 2014 and failed miserably so I'm the last person to predict records.
However, that first game @ Utah will be pretty interesting.
