Maryland prez leaks Conference divisions
Not a fan of this at all.
Maryland prez tells regents MD, RU in Leaders Division w/OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, Purdue & Indiana. Illinois moves to Legends
Legends
- Michigan
- Nebraska
- Michigan State
- Iowa
- Minnesota
- Northwestern
- Illinois
Leaders
- Ohio State
- Penn State
- Wisconsin
- Purdue
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Rutgers
It probably guarantees the protected crossover game (can't wait to see who they matchup with Maryland & Rutgers) which means Michigan would play the other teams once every 6 years.
Huge competitive and recruiting disadvantage for Legends Division as well as the Ohio, Pennsylvania, DC/Baltimore, and Jersey markets are all in the other division.

You do realize that there are many posters on here with varied opinions, right? Some posters are consistently opposed to "cupcake" games and other posters are consistently fine with "cupcake" games. Same goes with RR vs. old school and jersey issues. Its not like one poster is constantly changing his/her opinion.
November 19th, 2012 at 3:54 PM ^
When did Purde and Indiana get upgraded from "non-cupcake" status? OSU is going to have 4 auto-wins every season: Purdue, Indiana, Maryland and Rutgers. Add in the likely scenario of PSU being down for a while and OSU only has one true competitor in their divsion for the forseeable future: Wisconsin.
This blows hard.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:58 PM ^
Get 2 extra, lose one... so everyone gets a net of one cupcake.
I don't think OSU fans are thrilled with a schedule of Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland and Penn State.
If the other cross division game is a crappy one, OSU's schedule is basically Michigan, Wisconsin and whatever good out of conference team they're playing (unless that team ends up to be shitty, like Cal this year).

No offense, but this thinking has always sort of bugged me. Teams get better and teams get worse. There will be years when our division is stronger, and there will be years when theirs is stronger. Believe it or not, even Indiana has gone to the Rose Bowl. Yes, historically teams are better than others, but looking at these two divisions, it's about as fair as it reasonably can be without knowing what the future holds. It hasn't been THAT long since Purdue was decent, and they'll get there again, etc. And we have no idea how good Maryland and Rutgers will be in the B16. I know it's the internet, but I think we should let it play out over a decade or so before we make judgements of fairness.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:13 PM ^
to not try and "guess" who is good or not, and just split it up on logical regional distribution, and save on travel and keep close teams close and playing each other.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
Seriously?
What a load of horseshit
November 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
O COOL I LIVE ON THE EAST COAST AND I DIDN'T WANT TO SEE MICHIGAN PLAY WITHOUT HAVING TO HOP ON A PLANE ANYWAY.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:53 PM ^
wow, that's an easy draw for ohio state
i anticipate wisky will slowly decline, penn state will be a shell of its former self for at least 4 more years, so osu will dominate no doubt
November 19th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
Illinois gets their rivalry game with Michigan annually.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
Ohio State was probably as big a game for Illinois fans as Michigan was so this is probably a wash for them.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
Rumors have it that the new crossover matchups are:
Illinois-Indiana
Northwestern-Rutgers
MSU-Maryland
November 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
Made me laugh out loud.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:57 PM ^
Must see television there. Going to force cable companies out east to put BTN on the basic cable tier
November 19th, 2012 at 2:03 PM ^
MSU-Maryland
Call it the Couch Burning Classic

The Old Scorched Sofa - A Tradition Since 2014!
November 19th, 2012 at 2:02 PM ^
Well, it seems like the two factions supporting this move were people hoping the divisions would get an overhaul and east-coasters who wanted to get Michigan games in their neighborhood. This ought to piss off both of them.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
The things is, getting Michigan in the neighborhood was never a reason to support the move for me, it was just the consolation prize.
Now Michigan would come out to the East Coast, what...every 6 years??
November 19th, 2012 at 2:13 PM ^
Yup. To Rutgers once every 12, and to Maryland once every 12.
Other than OSU, Michigan will play the leaders division teams once every 6 years each. That totally makes them in the same conference.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
You know, in a few years when Michigan and Ohio State play back-to-back games five years in a row and some kid asks, "Wait, why are the leaders and best not in the Leaders division?" I hope the B1G administration looks at one another and says, "Well, this was demonstrably not well thought out."
November 19th, 2012 at 3:26 PM ^
After a couple years of back to back OSU-UM games, the game will be moved to October. That was the plan when the divisions were announced but the outcry was so great they decided to leave the game on the last weekend.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
Who else is pumped for a home schedule of Appalachian State, Miami (NTM), Utah, Northwestern, Iowa, Michigan State, and Rutgers in 2014!!!!
November 19th, 2012 at 2:17 PM ^
Because I'd watch a Michigan footbal team play Parcheesi.
November 19th, 2012 at 4:42 PM ^
Because this is most definitely watering down the product.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
So when are these yahoos going to start conference play? I fear that if they start playing before the 9-game conference schedule starts, we're going to be deprived of playing OSU for a year or two.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:58 PM ^
Maryland and Rutgers are going to try and join by 2014.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
Well I for one can't wait to play a competitive and compelling game against a Maryland squad that doesn't look in any sense like Dr. Rockso the Rock and Roll Clown (he does cocaine) instead of playing Ohio.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
Maybe our fan base can freak out and get B1G to change its mind regarding the two divisions and the names?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
There is no way that the conference would have allowed Michigan and Ohio State, the two marquee teams in the conference, to be in the same division. None. I am absolutely certain that it wasn't even under consideration, and it never will be considered.
The only 2 schools that want it would be Michigan and Ohio State. The other 12 schools would not want to be in the same division (for competitive reasons) and they would not want to be in the opposite division (for attendance reasons).
November 19th, 2012 at 3:20 PM ^
They will never change the fucking division names. Never. It is writ in stone now.
Submit.
November 19th, 2012 at 1:56 PM ^
I can't believe the Big Ten powers that be would not use this opportunity to rid themselves of the stupid Leaders & Legends crap. Maybe I'm losing my memory, but weren't the division names and placement WIDELY hated - like, across the conference - and not just by the Michigan and OSU fanbases?
November 19th, 2012 at 1:57 PM ^
in our division. Everything else about this is beyond terrible. Death to Delaney
November 19th, 2012 at 2:00 PM ^
chill out there, ahmadinejad!
November 19th, 2012 at 1:58 PM ^
but this doesn't look anything like balance... i could argue that the top 3 teams in each division are basically a wash but of the next 4 in each group, only Iowa and NW have had any meaningful contribution recently.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:01 PM ^
I hope Jim Delany realizes that moving shit around does not make it go away...
November 19th, 2012 at 2:02 PM ^
The only thing I was remotely happy about regarding this deal - as a Jersey resident - was the potential for Michigan to play a game every other year 20 minutes from my apartment. Now? Dead to me.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:02 PM ^
I always hated Mary, why does she get a land named after her? AND WHAT IS SHE DOING IN THE B1G?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!
November 19th, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
Bah dammit. I was supporting this hoping we'd get a OSU-M-MSU-PSU-MD division. Womp womp WHY NOT EAST WEST GODDAMMIT?!?
ALSO MARYLAND YOU HAVE BEEN IN THIS CONFERENCE 10 MINUTES YOU ARE BAD AT KEEPING SECRETS!!!!!1
November 19th, 2012 at 2:04 PM ^
Why dont they just swap Indiana for Wisconsin that way OSU has to beat absolutely nobody to win their conference. PSU is going to be dogshit awful for the next decade or so so only vaunted Wisconsin (and I think they're on a downswing) stands between Ohio and total domination.
And they say cheaters never prosper.......
November 19th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
To take a bad idea and make it worse.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:06 PM ^
Other than OSU having an easy path to the title game, who wins here? Besides Maryland and Rutgers--they win huge by getting out of their respective conferences. Everyone else loses big. This is worse than Leaders and Legends.
Seriously, even OSU can't be too happy about this. They have to play in New Jersey every other year!
Maybe the Big 12 is taking applications...
November 19th, 2012 at 2:06 PM ^
Any chance they are a Big Ten member starting next year?
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
This a complete disaster. I know everyone says that Rutgers and Maryland will bring in their respective markets. This seems highly dubious to me. I was not aware that people in NY and DC care at all about Rutgers and Maryland football. At least their are two more cupcakes to beat up on every 7 years. Wonderful.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
This guarantees OSU to be in the B1G Championship 9 out of 10 years. WTF? Brandon!!!
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
November 19th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
looking better, and better....
November 19th, 2012 at 2:11 PM ^
I say we just grandfather OSU into the B1G title game every year. They have a one game season and then they walk into the BCS. Why not? This conference is just for funsies now anyway. Fuck it.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:11 PM ^
Ugh. The only benefit of this was that Michigan's huge alumni base in the tri-state area would be able to attend games every couple of years without getting on an airplane, and they screw that up by putting Rutgers in a different division. Idiots.
At least there's basketball, I guess.
November 19th, 2012 at 2:12 PM ^
I'm gonna take a B1G pewp on Delaney's desk
