yeah -- hard to say 'rah, rah, rah', 'the team, the team, the team.' in the era of NIL, it is very much about star power and how they elevate the team both in wins/losses and halo effect of NIL.
100% this. Once we all stop idolizing people in this country, we will stop being shocked when our “heroes” turn out to be flawed like everyone else. And then maybe our “bipolar” (or maybe “borderline” is better) approach to our sports personalities will cease. Also: Michigan and nearly every school has many more unethical people whose names (ahem, Taubman) “grace” its buildings. They just happened to donate a shit ton of money. Moral: almost no one deserves a statue or a building.
No denying that this is all disappointing info regarding Bo, but less surprising when you consider the era and its context and that he was a man just trying to win football games. Sorta like finding out that our greatest children’s book author, Dr. Seuss, was exceptionally racist toward Blacks and Asians. Or that Benjamin Franklin was a womanizer. Or that Thomas Jefferson not only owned slaves but fathered children with them.
But, whatever one thinks of UM’s approach to the legal settlements, I don’t think UM has run away from or denied their failings (cough, cough, MSU and PSU).
UCLA guarded Chaundee hard. They wanted to let the cold guy shoot it. Would have been sweet redemption for Wagner to hit it after the terrible game he had, but wasn't meant to be
limited data on Juwan with only 1.75 seasons and many key players having been developed and recruited under Beilein, but can't argue with this analysis given the the data we have. We do need to acknowledge that Harbaugh was handed a rebuilding effort, but Juwan was handed an ascendent program. Also key pieces -- primary rival in basketball (MSU) had peaked a decade earlier but primary rival in football (OSU) has been on a consistent rise that has spanned two decades.
was wondering the same thing. he is a crap shot machine. if he played against michigan like that and there was half competent officiating, we would have won by 20
lots of good teams have struggled against inferior opponents, especially in their second games. Illinois and Ohio State nearly lost. Kentucky lost to Richmond. Early season basketball can be hard to watch at times!
not to belabor the point, but here's why it seemed Saban reached out to MSU:
After Dantonio stepped down a week ago after 13 seasons, Saban quickly called a longtime Michigan State acquaintance. That eventually led to the coordination of a lengthy phone conversation between Saban and athletic director Bill Beekman and deputy athletic director Alan Haller.
agree -- except in that situation, you had Harbaugh soliciting the opinion of others, not the other way around. seems to indicate either Saban still wants to see MSU succeed or really hates Michigan/Harbaugh and wants to maximize their competition for them to fail, or (and most likely) both.
no institutional accountability whatsoever. you knew it would only stay that way when they hired a career politician to head the university. pretty sad, but at least it is getting out in the open somewhat (although it remains to be seen if there will be any real consequences for MSU)
i can't prove it, but wagner seemed to U turn in his performance right after he went for a loose ball in the paint that ended in a jump ball. at the time, i felt like the little chippiness experienced right after that between him and the villanova dude was going to light a fire under him and he was going to perform even better than before. unfortunately, if my recollection serves me well, i think he airballed a 3 right after that and had another airball on a 2 point attempt shortly after...
sorry if i missed the backstory on this since i don't continuously follow recruiting, but any reason we haven't been on kolin demens harder given his brother played at michigan?
Excellent piece. This sort of reporting makes me proud to be a UM alum--we should always be critical of our own institution because we love our institution. This is exactly the kind of piece that East Lansing/Lansing newspapers need to be putting out. A critical examination of their culture is in order, and that needs to happen from within to be most effective.
michigan state's response to all of this has been insane. usually i'd say the cover up is worse than the crime, but this crime is so bad it's hard to argue that one. but they certainly aren't doing themselves any favors with this. just awful, awful approach to this terrible situation.
long time reader who decided to finally register just to cheer on internet bullying? that's what finally tipped the scales for you to register so you can comment?!
I think we just got really unlucky against LSU w that waters kid making tons of circus shots he will never replicate. Tonight the circus shots are not falling
i think the only reason everyone is panicked is that the strength of this team has very little to do with harbaugh (other than his decision to hire don brown), and that harbaugh's strengths (qb development, power running game with creativity sprinkled in) have seem to gotten off track.
i was begging for harbaugh for years, so i am not going to bail now, but it definitely hurts that we've lost to our rivals so often even with his arrival.
that's cool; glad you enjoyed it and nice to hear your perspective. just wish the school could announce what games are night games at the beginning of the season so those who don't live nearby can plan accordingly to not come to those games if they are not ideal for them
yeah, easy to say from where you are sitting, but they didn't make the kickoff decision on this one until 12 days before kickoff. makes planning to come to a game from out of town a tad bit challenging
yup, nothing worse than 1995 purdue. we took my little cousin to that game because he was getting interested in michigan football. he was so excited, and was thinking of attending michigan. after that game, he enrolled at UNC and never watched another college football game live.
fair point! doesn't mean the experience is for everyone. just a bummer you don't know what time the game is until you are already pot committed if you are coming from out of town like me! i would gladly have stayed at home and made the trip from the west coast for another game that kicked off at noon or 3:30
i came into town with my wife and kids, and took my two older boys to their first game ever in the big house. when we bought the tickets, i was hoping for a noon or 3:30 kickoff. obviously, the night environment was not ideal for kids. but honestly, even with that said, i found it gross altogether. the bathroom lines were insanely long for men in particular (i speculate this is due to all the drunk folks diuresing after pounding their last few beers prior to entry), and there was so much more profanity compared to the last time i went to a game (which was, for the record, another night game vs. notre dame in the hoke era, aka devin gardner for heisman game). several drunk people fell onto my kids walking to the aisles. two women nearby got into a fight and started calling each other "bitches."
there are some games that are OK for night games (like notre dame; as much as i don't like notre dame, their fans tend to be classier), but state seems like not a great choice.

Both teams featured a cornerback wearing #2 who made a pivotal interception in the game
Seems about right based on our performance last year. Hopefully we can surprise some people.

agree. just baffling how we had both the smith and wagner opportunity to drive with plenty of time yet both times the opted for a three.
Amen

i thought that was particularly cool (the trailblazing bit), too

i mean, les did bang moeller's wife (allegedly)
Some rumbles on 247 board that Bellamy’s connections have made this a real flip possibility.
Holy shit guys. We are a great team in an exceptional conference. Did you think we were going to be undefeated?!

The program is such a dumpster fire, they were even piping in crowd noise during our offensive series

fish out water, true, but a very rich fish! and i cannot imagine wanting to live in lubbock, regardless if you are a southern boy, over westwood!
good points, though. maybe ucla should pluck chris holtmann away from ohio state!
they should throw a ton of cash at Chris Beard. Lots of respect for what he did in the tourney and his class in victory and defeat.

I don’t think he has ever picked Michigan. He has an irrational hatred of Michigan.
i thought all those legends jerseys were re-retired?

Masterful gameplan
Woo!
Amazing 2 true freshman qbs are playing like seasoned veterans but we can’t find a QB to be average. :(

i agree the nightgame situation was suboptimal.
i came into town with my wife and kids, and took my two older boys to their first game ever in the big house. when we bought the tickets, i was hoping for a noon or 3:30 kickoff. obviously, the night environment was not ideal for kids. but honestly, even with that said, i found it gross altogether. the bathroom lines were insanely long for men in particular (i speculate this is due to all the drunk folks diuresing after pounding their last few beers prior to entry), and there was so much more profanity compared to the last time i went to a game (which was, for the record, another night game vs. notre dame in the hoke era, aka devin gardner for heisman game). several drunk people fell onto my kids walking to the aisles. two women nearby got into a fight and started calling each other "bitches."

now that's more like indiana football--boring and ineffective.
bummer he didn't get to play in either bowl game the past two years. will be rooting hard for him in the NFL, wherever he ends up
man, he sure takes a lot of flacko, cut him some slacko, he's a pretty good quarterbacko (though not elite!)
found out that asu doesn't actually have a tennis program
