From the official announcement it seems as if it was a family issue. "This is a unique circumstance, but we are glad Adam came to the conclusion that leading the Michigan men's tennis program was the best decision for him and his family."

Overall not really sure. Strange situation.

But would he have announced the change in the first place before the money questions were all settled?

This is just completely idle speculation, but I do wonder if he showed up in Tempe and found out that something wasn't the way it was initially represented to him.  Remember that ASU is just starting a men's tennis program, and I think they weren't going to have an actual team until the 2017/18 year.  ASU still doesn't have a page for men's tennis on their official website, which is strange for a program that had already hired a big name coach.

Perhaps he found out that the University wasn't doing enough to get things moving, or perhaps he didn't get the assistants that he wanted, or perhaps he saw clear signals that his program would be "second-class" behind the women's program, or something like that.

On the other hand, both Michigan and ASU said the decision was made for "personal reasons" so who knows.  Again, it is all speculation on my part.

The problem is that I tried this strategy a few times in my younger days but they never said "No, you're not."

Indeed, they seemed relieved that I would want to go.

In all seriousness tough, if it was a family thing - and those things happen - then glad to see he made the best decision for his family. Welcome back to Michigan, Adam Steinberg.

Case in point, Bernie Smilovitz of WDIV. Left there for bright lights of NYC sports, found out he didn't have what it took, bombed there and came back to same job back in MI.

Personally, can't stand the guy, don't care for his shtick, self-publicity/importance, and how everything he reports is more about him rather than the topic or event. Hate when any reporter treats his topics or subjects like it is all about the reporter and not the subject of his interview or report.

This is amazing for this program. We were looking at our 3rd different coach in 4 years.

Instability with big time recruits on the docket in the future may have killed all the momentum we built this year under Steiny.

Thank GOD. Off the top of my head, I don't know if this has been done before at Michigan. A coach leaving only to change their mind.
