Angels are going to poop on everyone anyway.

No .300 hitter and the cleanup hitter has 7 homers on the year. If the Price who pitched the first 8 innings and the Verlander from his last start show up, I would only worry about the A's and their pitching staff.
September 23rd, 2014 at 11:28 PM ^
Yes, because those two facts clearly trump the fact that the Angels have scored the most runs in baseball this year...
You also realize Kendrick isn't their normal cleanup hitter right? They've already clinched the division so they are just putting out lineups.
They also have the best player in baseball which should probably be scary just a bit

Don't sleep on the Orioles this year.
They are quietly taking care of business and somehow are flying under the radar. They seem pretty solid this year.

Better to walk them off anyway. :)

Keep making these dumb threads if it keeps meaning wins.

Also, I'm annoyed as anyone about Nathan, but all those runs were on Price, not Joe. We can blame him for a lot of stuff, but not this one.

1 game lead.
When can I start biting my toenails? My fingernails are bleeding at the roots.
September 23rd, 2014 at 10:41 PM ^
I think we still have 5 games left.
September 23rd, 2014 at 10:46 PM ^
Problem is, while biting my nails, must have gnawed off one of my fingers and didn't realize it, causing the mis-count. Bloody mess on my hands and on Ausmus' hands, too, if the Tigers would have blown this one.

No worries, playoff baseball just reached Detroit a week earlier than we all thought it would. It sure would be nice if Bauer and the Tribe bats showed up tomorrow because we're going to need all the help we can get with Sale on the hill tomorrow afternoon.

Nathan should not be closer but he still has some value as a bullpen arm. I don't understand why Soria has not been getting meaningful innings. He had a rough transition to Detroit but is probably the most reliable late inning guy.

has sucked this year but how was tonight his fault?

Todd Jones. Try to keep up, Jamie!
:-)

I thought it was the right move to send Price out for the 9th. When Ausmus came out the first time, I thought that he had no choice but to lift Price. When he actually did go get Price later, why on God's green earth did he bring in Nathan? It worked out, but you can't tell me you had a warm and fuzzy feeling when you saw him come wandering in from the pen.

Well if you're a glass half full person like myself you can see that the Tigers can technically clinch a playoff spot tomorrow, albeit a wildcard spot but they can clinch.
September 23rd, 2014 at 10:59 PM ^
Words you think you'd never utter: "That Todd Jones was relatively stable when he saved games."
September 23rd, 2014 at 11:05 PM ^
Fernando Rodney was Dennis Fucking Eckersley compared to the 9th inning circus we got on a nightly basis now.

Statistically you're correct. But my tongue will forever feel like sandpaper if I use those words.

(I bet if I turned on the Huge Show I'd still hear Bill Simonson blathering that line.)

is questioning leaving Price in the game. Through 8 innings he had faced 3 over the miniumum and his pitch count was low 90's. The guy throws deep into games as often and as well as anyone in baseball.
Professional baseball players hit good pitches into open areas of the field, its called baseball.

I actually am indifferent with the move Ausmus made last night. In hindsight I feel as if he should have been lifted after the second hit. Here is why: 1. Everybody knows how many innings DPrice has thrown over the last five or six years. Wear and tear, see JV's output over the same period and his current struggles with velocity and commanding the strike zone like he used to. DPrice has thrown the most pitches in MLB this year and saving even 20 pitches could pay off for the playoffs. 2. He may have been dominant but the radar and the sharpness on his offspeed pitches were clear that the tank was emptying quickly. 3. take him out after the second hit to preserve his chance at the win (even if the two runs score). 4. adds to three that taking him out after a solid start after his previous start would be building positive momentum.
Go Tigers!
Go Blue!

The problems with that are you don't move your $30M pitcher to the bullpen and V has been prone to the big innings all year. IMO putting him in the bullpen is just continuing the same coin flip issues that we have had all year in the bullpen.

Ausmus has shown to be as stupid and old school as Leyland. Verlander is struggling now because he was used waaay too much in the years previous. Leyland would leave him in for complete games when he could have pulled in in the 6th. You'd think the younger Ausmus would be more in touch with what's going on and not go with starters after the 7th (or beyond 80-90 pitches) but he won't. If I was Scherzer I would take the money and hit the road.
September 24th, 2014 at 8:40 AM ^
You want to turn games over to the bullpen after 80 pitches from our Cy Young starters? Are you totally batshit insane?
