Maybe where we disagree is whether being a bad person also makes you an idiot.  Who is "at fault" and who is "an idiot" are two different things.  I think there's a difference there, maybe you don't.  I could screw over my business partner and make out like a bandit.  That makes me a prick, but not necessarily an idiot.

I don't think cheating on a college boyfriend makes you an idiot if it works out fine for you.  It's not a nice thing to do, but the girl isn't the one throwing away a career (potentially) here.  Now, if she thought she was going to marry Reschke, then maybe she is an idiot for sleeping around.  But if Reschke is dating the chick who likes to sleep with his buddies, he's the idiot.  Sometimes the thing you need to learn in college is to not date that girl.

I'm glad she is not anyone I care about. This could be the difference between an NFL career or not for Rescke. It will follow him forever. MSUs lockeroom is a mess and you wonder how deep it goes. Guys sleeping with guys ex gf, racism, you go back to a 3 year starter at QB not being voted Captain. It's interesting what a lockeroom will forgive. You can brandish a weapon, coldcock someone or mistreat woman and guys tend to look the the other way. I see three people who all did really shitty things.

I don't like the slut-shaming either, but it's pretty shitty to hook up with a teammate's* girlfriend on the DL.  It's also naieve to think that if such activity comes to light that it won't cause strife in the locker room.

I'd have been pissed if I was Reschke too, assuming his gf relationship wasn't open.  I wouldn't go racist because that's not how I roll, but I would likely be in his grill pretty hard.  It's not that his gf was his "property" or anything - it's that two people that he thought were loyal to him betrayed his trust.  It's pretty human to be pissed about that.

*My view is that it's pretty shitty to hook up with anyone's girlfriend/boyfriend on the DL unless they're in an open relationship - because I don't like deception.  That includes those cases where the person you're hooking up with's gf/bf/tf is a stranger.  I get that this is not a universal view ...

There's no doubt it's human to be pissed about that.  But this whole situation is a "thing" because Reschke handled it like an idiot.  This is not the first college kid who found out his buddy hooked up with his gf.  The situation sucks all around, but Reschke is the one who took it from "fairly normal college thing" to "national sports news story and getting kicked off the team."  And he's the one who actually lost something here.

I had two buddies in high school who got MIPs after a party.  One was the star of the basketball team (this was during bball season) and the other was not on any sports team.  The kid on the basketball team missed the playoffs for his senior year (kinda big punishment) and the other kid got the normal slap on the wrist.  When you're the one who has something to lose, you need to hold yourself to a higher standard.

The whole situation is a "thing" in large part because Reschke's teammate thought it would be a good idea to sleep with Reschke's girlfriend.  Locker room dustups over such activity are not at all unusual and wholly predictable.  Sure, Reschke handled it like an idiot (worse yet, reportedly like a racist idiot).

But sleeping with your teammate's gf is stupid too.  It is very likely to end up in a fistfight, to drive factionalism in a locker room, and degrade team trust. So the racism is all on Reschke, but the situation is on both of them (IMO).

One thing for sure, none of the other football players are likely to accept the unnamed teammates offer to drive their gf home!

While I don't condone racism in any respect, form or fashion, I don't fully understand how that is so much worse and almost nuclear than beating up the wayward teamate in a fight, calling his mom something vulgar, or using any other type of profanity against the player or his family.  Also, if it was a black teammate saying it, I'm guessing that guy would still be on the team.

Honest question, if he would have slurred another race, would that have also caused such a strong response?

is why would that matter? I personally think it speaks to his character by bringing race into it at all, especially using a word that was created specifically to remind one group of people that they are sub-human and no better than animals or property regardless of what the Constitution says.

If his ex slept with a white guy I have a feeling race wouldn't have come into play at all but his reaction shows this was all the more injurious to him because he was black. I can't speak to the reaction if the other guy had been another race but I would imagine that, being on a team where the majority of the players are of that race, it would probably engender a bad response.

IMO, he needs more than to simply be swept away to another school after releasing a well-crafted PR "apology". He needs to focus on getting his mind wrapped around his racism and resolve that instead of trying to play football in an attempt to go to a league where, again, the majority of the players are black.

If it would have resulted in just a fistfight, we'd have reason to believe that it was just a personal issue with that one person. But because he used a racial slur, we have reason to believe he has a problem with men of that color because as the other poster pointed it, it was particularly painful to him because the man that slept with his girlfriend was black.

I haven't read the actually texts that he sent his girlfriend.  If he was mostly upset the guy was black, then you guys are absolutely right.  If he just used the n-word along with other profanities, then it's more plausible that he was hurt and trying to disparage the other guy with any nasty words he could think of.

it was his ex-gf. She's completely free to hook up with whoever she wants to.

The alleged texts seem to indicate that his problem was more about race than it was because she hooked up with an teammate. That and other things that are rumored to have happend in that locker room last year are why they voted to boot him.

Wow, quite an offseason for Sparty.  Besides McDowell and Nicholson choosing the greener pastures of the draft or free agency, they also lose Likuska, and now their best remaining defensive player, Reschke.  Also rumors about Corley and 3-9 other players who may be leaving the program.

Great observation. Here's why.

  1. I've been properly chastened the board response and hence, now hew the mgoblog party line. 1984'ed, I've been.
  2. Seriously, I still think when politics intersects with Michigan sports, it's fair game. (i.e., if JH said something about politics in a public forum. Or Denard. Or Peppers.) The board disagrees on the relevance of Michigan athletes speaking on politics, so I defer to the board.

I can't call it offensive as much as Ill-considered and an indication that whoever wrote it doesn't view it as political because they don't see other perspectives.

Taking offense over innocuous comments is starting to become a major problem on both sides and we all should probably step back from the ledge a bit.

But like you say, people are way too sensitive. A lot of comedians (incl. Jerry Seinfeld) say they can't go to college campuses anymore because of the political correctness.

I think the negs were more about people wanting to avoid a potential political meltdown on the board. Whether you voted for someone or not, if you lose your mind because someone poked fun at them, you need to lighten up. Just watch a White House Correspondent's dinner show and you'll see Presidents making fun of themselves.

Hate to burst your bubble, but not everything about Donald J. Trump is political. You're projecting.

Trump University was a failed business venture created by a reality TV personality who liked to slap his name on anything and everything. Perfect landing spot for a moron who couldn't survive E. Lansing.

That's it. That's the joke. The first person to mention politics was actually you.

Wrote one too many checks with that mouth of his. Let's see how he likes being locked in a classroom, locker room, or office building with a bunch of people he offended.

Good luck, kid. You're gonna need it.
