A Hillybilly waterpark.  Bravo.

4 days 7 hours ago I supply steel to

I supply steel to fabricators/manufacturers and there are quite a few jobs out there right now.  Those companies that survived 2009-2011 are now flourishing.  The problem is finding people who WANT to work.  Every single one of my customers in or around the city have the same complaint:  it's a chore finding candidates who will

  • pass a drug test
  • has transportation
  • isn't on probation
  • and most importantly, SHOW UP FOR WORK.

4 days 8 hours ago I don't think it's

I don't think it's salvagable.  Years of neglect and rotting wood, mold, infestation makes this a perfect candidate for tear-down.  If the city gave me the property for $1000, I'd buy those 2 today.

4 days 8 hours ago I don't know man.  Have you

I don't know man.  Have you traveled on the Davison, east of 75?  Wyoming & Grand River?  McGraw & Grand Blvd?  If Baltimore is much worse than those places, I recommend you find another city to live in.

4 days 8 hours ago Here's one of the "houses"

4 days 8 hours ago I've been working in the hood

I've been working in the hood for the last 10 years, and these are some things I've seen change recently (for the good):

Police actually patrolling I75 and <gasp> pulling people over for speeding

The "Slow's effect" on the immediate surrounding area

I actually saw kids playing in the street yesterday on Scotten (which is where our plant is located).

Delapidated houses are starting to get demoilished (at least in the area I'm located.  Still a LOT more to go)

Right across the street from our building is a couple burned out and abandoned homes.  Just this morning I was considering going downtown to inquire into buying those two.  In MY opinion, I think we may have reached the bottom here in Detroit.  It might be time to invest.

6 days 6 hours ago My son applied to Michigan,

My son applied to Michigan, Harvard, and Stanford.  Despite my wife and I being Michigan alumni, we both wanted him to go to either of the other 2 IF he got accepted.

It turned out to be a non-issue.

EDIT:  He finished his first year in Ann Arbor and did exceptionally well.  I are a proud papa.

1 week 1 day ago I think the Camaro looks

I think the Camaro looks better than the Mustang, but the Challenger is better than both.  Chrysler nailed it.  Triple black with aluminum "Crager-style" rims looks bad ass.

He can do that, cuz he's a man.

1 week 1 day ago 1. Will Devin Gardner's last

1. Will Devin Gardner's last game in a Michigan uniform be a playoff game? Sadly, no.  Our division + B1GCG is asking a lot and until I see evidence we CAN do it, I'll remain pessimistic.

2. Is Michigan the next B1G team to go to the Final Four in MBB? Sadly, no.  It's sooooo difficult to reach the Final 4.  State is stacked and their little "Final 4 streak for every 4 year player" is on the line.

3. Who is the final unbeaten team in the B1G this year in football? Us.  I have high hopes this year.

4. How many recruits commit at the BBQ in July?  Who are they? No Idea.  No idea.

5. Which current recruit is going to shock us by picking Michigan?  Which recruit is going to shock us by not picking Michigan? Don't know who is shocking us by picking Michigan, but Malik McDowell will shock us the other way.

Oh.  And did I mention my frustration with the new iPhone app for MGo?  I don't want to toggle for the next 50 replies.

1 week 1 day ago Garage Sales: Enough with

Garage Sales:

  • Enough with the old, out-dated trinkets that should have been thrown away rather than put up for sale.
  • I don't want your stanky, musty Members Only jacket.  Donate it, weirdo.
  • Apparently, most of the ladies who host sales have been brainwashed on the actual definition of HUGE.
  • I would like to buy your old tools.  I would NOT like to get home and find out they're broken, missing parts, or fried.
  • My kids are embarrassed by my sudden obsession with Craigslist "free" section
1 week 2 days ago The best salmon I ever smoked

The best salmon I ever smoked came from a small metal bowl of hickory chips over single electric burner, inside a big cardboard box. Got the idea from Alton Brown. The key is preparation and letting the food develop a pellicle. I also have an electric Masterbuilt. It does the job and doesn't require a whole lot of attention.

If you smoke with charcoal, you have to monitor the heat constantly (from my experience). But the food does taste better.

Loyola's John Callahan is a big ND guy? I don't think he's ever sent a player to South Bend....ever. And I get the feeling that if McDowell was soooo influenced by his Irish-loving coach, he wouldn't be transferring just before his senior season. My $0.02

He'll face better competition, that's for sure.

As long as he moves and there's nothing blatantly fishy about his transfer, he'll be eligible this Fall.

1 week 6 days ago Yes, it probably should, and

Yes, it probably should, and the ONE incident we did have turned into a pissing match (I use the term "we" loosely because I wasn't on the staff at the time).  The kid went on to be a D1 QB for a MAC school, played (and might have even started), then transferred to Grand Valley.  He played one year in Europe and is now back in Michigan, working like the rest of us.

And in the end, it's impossible to say if enrolling early would have changed anything.

1 week 6 days ago In Michigan, it's not an

In Michigan, it's not an arch-diocese rule that I'm aware of but rather the individual school's.  At the school I coach, we just felt the kid would miss out on a milestone occasion in his young life:  graduating with his classmates, and to a lesser extent - prom.  Obviously football is important to these kids, and their eagerness to move on to college ball is important to them.  But in the looooooong run - 20+ years down the line - completing the high school experience is probably more important.

2 weeks 10 hours ago I grew up in SoCal as a huge

I grew up in SoCal as a huge Rams fan. I watched Deacon, Olsen, The Youngbloods, Cromwell, et al and cursed the Minnesota Vikings' frigid outdoor stadium that seemed to doom us every year.

I got to meet Deacon at a party in Laguna Beach that my old man snuck me in to as a 13 year old. It was absolutely NOT someplace a young boy should have been at. My dad told me to tell everyone I was 18. So I followed the plan, and as I'm talking to Mr Jones, I tell him I'm 18 and am going to play defense in college. My inebriated father blurts out "HE'S Not 18. He's only 13!"

Way to go pops.

RIP Deacon. You were truly a fearsome football player.

2 weeks 1 day ago I was a salesman/manager/and

I was a salesman/manager/and owner in the car business and I haven't bought a new car in forever.

I currently have a '10 Ford Fusion w/ a 4cylinder. Good car, fantastic gas mileage, but a little rickety. I also have an '04 Trailblazer with 229,000 miles on the online 6. Thing is a beast. Finally, I got my kids a 02 Jeep Liberty.

Point is, you can absolutely find a good reliable used car. Try buying from an individual rather than a dealer. Look for someone who changed the oil religiously and has the records to back it up.

2 weeks 1 day ago Intriguing story.  Thanks for

Intriguing story.  Thanks for taking the time to write this.  I've never traveled abroad but I'm mezmerized by stories from those that do.  My step-mom is a Korean immigrant who lives with her mom and sister at my dad's house in Southern Cal.  She doesn't say much about her homeland, even though I ask a thousand questions.

2 weeks 6 days ago The Knowledge is like

The Knowledge is like avacadoes.  When I was younger, I couldn't stand the look, texture, or taste of them.  I despised them, and couldn't understand how anyone could enjoy them.  Nasty ass, wrinkly-lookin thing.

Then as I matured, I could eat guacamole but still hated sliced, raw avacadoes.

Now, as an older, more mature self, I have come to really enjoy avacadoes in all their spendor.
