Not sure why this news from 2018 deserves this kind of attention in the wake of Monday's results.  On the other hand, it is a reminder that M has done nothing to honor Keith Jackson and his naming of the Stadium as "The Big House."  That has brought M significant attention and honor in itself.  And made us alums even more proud of the Best University in the World.  Let's put a plaque or "trophy case" of some kind in the stadium area to honor this wonderful friend of M.  As long as the Stadium exists, his legacy will never end!!

Keith Jackson’s voice on YouTube calling games from the 90s is about the most direct and poignant source of nostalgia that I have.  He brought atmosphere and energy to every game without ever making it about him.  Truly an American legend.

Keith Jackson IS college football to me. He started calling games the year I was born (I think) and retired when I was 40.  For anyone too young to remember him go back and watch some Michigan games pre 2006.

  1. "Well, folks, down in Michigan town, it's a hullabaloo! They're as eager as a kid in a candy store, but what to say, that's the question."
  2. "Hold onto your hats, Michigan fans! The excitement is swirling like leaves in a cyclone, but finding the right words is tougher than a two-dollar steak."
  3. "Oh, mercy! The Wolverines faithful are buzzing like bees in a honeypot, but when it comes to expressing it, they're like a quarterback with too many options!"
  4. "Folks, it's a downright hootenanny in Michigan country! They're as pumped up as a tire at a gas station, but articulating that fervor is a bit like herding cats."
  5. "Goodness gracious, Michigan enthusiasts are on cloud nine! They're as thrilled as a flea at a dog show, yet formulating the perfect comment is trickier than a flea on a hot griddle."
  6. "Well, well, well! The Wolverine faithful are as lively as a juke joint on a Saturday night, but deciding what to say is akin to picking a needle from a haystack."
  7. "Hang on tight, my friends! Michigan's spirit is higher than a kite in a thunderstorm, yet crafting the ideal post is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack."
  8. "Look out now! The excitement in Ann Arbor is as palpable as grandma's apple pie, but putting that enthusiasm into words? Tougher than a $2 steak, I tell ya!"
  9. "Oh, mercy me! Michigan fans are revved up like a race car at Daytona, but finding the right words is akin to trying to catch lightning in a bottle."
  10. "Hold onto your maize and blue, folks! The Wolverines faithful are as fired up as a bonfire on a cold night, but expressing it? Well, that's a bit like trying to lasso a wild stallion!"

Thanks GPT!

"You'd think with AI these days that ESPN could've had a Keith Jackson broadcast of the game Monday night."

We should soon have the option of who we would like to call whatever game we are watching:

Keith Jackson

Bob Ufer

Ernie Harwell (Never called football, but I can imagine Ernie saying "He stood there like the house by the side of the road as Corum ran past.")

Ernie Harwell absolutely did call football.  He was color, and later play-by-play, for Georgia Tech football in the 1940s.  In the 1950s, he did play-by-play for Fordham, Boston College, and Yale at various times, and for the NFL NY Giants in 1952.  He also did the Baltimore Colts in 1956-1958.

Regrettably, he was also talked into doing Michigan State football in 1963.

We're pretty much there if we wanted to be.  The AP has been writing AI game summaries from the stats for like 15 years.  (Source: I used to license news from the AP.)   Eleven Labs and other services can clone a voice with a 3 second sample and GPT is an improvement on what the AP has been doing.   The only big hurdle is the real time interpretation of what is happening on the field.  There is so much film and existing commentary that training a model should be possible.

Going down an internet rabbit hole.  This bootcamp programmer (Not a computer vision ML engineer) using open source software is able to get data from football video that you could use for commentary.  3-4 minutes of the demo where it starts is sort of fun.

This guy has generated commentary from video for non-American football.  It isn't in real time, but looks like it could be.  30-40 seconds of demo is fun.

TLDR--you can do auto commentary using tools that are available today. Many of them are open source.

I'm curious how Michigan and other teams could use this technology to pick up on opposing teams tendencies using ML.   I have a friend who does data analysis for NASCAR and he and his partners don't use any ML.  They just crunch all of the numbers in excel.  I'm curious if anyone knows how advanced football analytics are.

Today should be a national holiday.

Maybe not a holiday, but a national day of mourning. We could even turn it into a week of mourning with paid holidays for all. We could spend the week re-watching our favorite broadcasts of the legend

The first college football game I ever watched was in '92 and Michigan was playing with Keith Jackson calling the game. I fell in love with both that day. Don't get me wrong, there have been a couple guys since that I have enjoyed, like Gus and Joel...Actually they are the only two that I have enjoyed since Keith, but even they have nothing on him. He painted a picture with his words and brought the game to life in a way no one has ever done before or since. He could have people excited to watch a game between UCONN and Rice for pete sake. He just had that way about him.

Woah Nellie!!   Last time I saw him was like, 6 years ago! I knew I should have kept track of him. 😢

Seriously, he would have enjoyed this year. All the legends are smiling this week.  Miss you Keith!

I'm now kicking myself for not taking a selfie with his statue at the Rose Bowl, while there a few weeks ago.  (I tailgated too much and didn't get to the stadium early enough)
