This makes me really proud on how we kept it together thru our period of darkness, loosing will bring out some ugly things but nothing like this ever hit us

Meh, that's a pretty low threshold for taking pride in something. Personally, I'm not proud of people managing to avoid being absolutely horrible to each other. That should be expected even when everything isn't sunshine and rainbows. Happy we didn't succumb to this? Yes. But not "really proud."

Clearly Reschke comments were completely uncalled for and no matter what there isn't a excuse for what he said. Plain and simple. Now as for Lyles it just goes to show he was putting this hook up ahead of the team. We all know this team was a absolute dumpster fire last season. But now we know that the ship Dantonio was running was so iron clad like many sparties want everyone to believe.

He should find some good counseling and intercultural awareness training before worrying about a new football program. Without a meaningful change of heart his options after football will be limited as well.

Man. Disappointing amount of "while I don't condone racism.."s and misogyny on here.

Fuck that guy. Hope he becomes a better person. An apology without so many qualifiers would be a start.

The "holier than thou" in this thread is almost cringe worthy. That language is beyond not ok. We all know that.

Let me tell you a story...at bowling green state university while I was working there as an ATC very similar situation happened. They fought, called each other every name in the book in the most vehement way and if people didn't get involved it very well was on it's way to escalating to getting guns involved. This is not that unique of a situation.

They missed a practice to get their heads right. I get the current climate but if you're that upset about this we should think about cancelling college football.

Been in a lot of football locker rooms and heard that word a lot of times (not in the "bro" way either). It's not acceptable. At the same time the line of people ready to put him on the guillotine is a bit much.

In desperate situations of pure rage people will go to the deepest cutting insult even if that is not what is really in their heart. It's human nature. That's why I'm not jumping on him being the most racist guy ever. Frankly, he could be a racist asshole. He also could be a guy in a rage that went to the sharpest cutting knife he could find after some dude pounded is g/f. The latter doesn't make it right or "ok" don't get me wrong but there is a middle ground that exists between crowning him leader of the local MSU KKK and it being "no big deal".

As a black guy, I know that's the low hanging fruit when there is conflict with differing ethnic backgrounds. The "go to" as it were. Still, I can differentiate between a committed white supremicist and a simpleton who, in a fit of rage ,brings out the big gun as the WMD. I can be perfectly objective and see this incident without overreacting or banishing Reschke to the David Duke fanclub.

But, what is surprising, is the "but, oversensitivity" camp on the thread. As if more evidence is needed to give the hurling of the slur more validation. Also, the pained examination of PC culture or campus attitudes as the real culprit here makes me wonder why some need unpack beyond the use of the language. As much as I think this incident doesn't conclusively make him a racist, I am also firm in the belief that the disptued political/social peripheral issues should not be used to soften the consequences.

PS

Also, the "well black people use the word" is a false equivalence. that does not take into account the tortured reappropriating of the word. And, he wasn't quoting Biggie in this exchange.

Even most professional racists are smart enough to avoid that specific term. It is the one word you cannot get away with, if you are a public figure (and a football player is). This is doubly true of you aspire to work in a profession that's 70% black.

Now, I do believe in second chances, so if he were to take this opportunity and learn from it--and more precisely, learn not to be a goddamned racist--then I'd support the idea of giving him a second chance. But he's got to show that he has learned, and isn't just sad that he got caught. That's going to take work.
