Izzo went on a rant when Brandon Johns called him on signing day
Brandon Johns was at the game Saturday, too.
http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/2018/01/11/brandon-john…
Johns, a senior forward and four-star recruit at East Lansing High School, turned down offers from Purdue, Texas, California and Pittsburgh, among others.
He also shunned MSU and head coach Tom Izzo, who had been recruiting him since seventh grade. Before Johns inked his letter of intent Nov. 10, he reached out to all the coaches who had sought his services.
The local call was the toughest.
“Yeah, he went on a whole rant,” Johns said of Izzo. “That was not what I expected. It wasn’t easy.

I was listening to the MSU radio broadcast after the game yesteday on my way home. The old guy Will Tieman who does PBP sounded like he had to put his dog down. After some lulz, I switched the station to Michigan's postgame coverage.
/Cool story, bro.

Tieman is crazy incompetent. The guy personally buys the rights to MSU's out-state broadcasts just so he can personally call the.games. Everyone should listen to at least half of one of the games he calls. It's unbelievable---consistently 3-4 seconds behind the play, mistaking players, mispronouncing names etc. High school broadcastsare better.
January 14th, 2018 at 9:54 PM ^
He buys the rights to call the games himself?
Sounds like he needs a hobby.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:43 AM ^
It is his hobby. And frankly a much more interesting hobby than any hobby I pursue.

To be fair, Gus is 91 effing years old. Now that doesn't explain why someone would hire a 91 year. Keith Jackson was only 89 when he passed, but could still call a better game than Tieman and Ganakis from beyond the grave.

got Livers and Johns to commit to Michigan. Both grew up MSU fan and were thought to be MSU lock.

Seems to be spot on. I still can't believe how many player's he's lost early to the NBA. Especially when comparing recruiting stars to other programs. He's not a come here get paid now coach, but he's got a hell of a record for getting guys fat paychecks in a few years.

With each passing year, my constant joke that Izzo is phenomenal on help defense becomes less of a joke and more of a "why don't they just ask him to guard the perimeter and try to take away the three?"
Even better, he apparently said "their offense didn't beat us", and you know, in a way he's right - there was spot on defense involved too, so it wasn't the offense by itself, merely in part. Sorry if that was confusing, Tom.

Little baby man can't lose, well, like a man either. Listening to the Sparty post-game radio, he had to make a subtle point of something or other about Michigan's illegal defense and how they played his boys way out on the perimeter. Dude loves to hear himself talk and the shit he spews forth just feeds Staee fan's delusional worldview.

I would love to see Johns Tom Crean his butt during a game as Izzo is out in the middle of the court barking at a player or ref. That would be spectatcular.

That would be the same Rutgers that MSU needed OT to beat this past week.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I remember when Stringer Bell and others were calling for Beilein's head and suggesting Archie Miller or someone comparable be hired. I bet if we had lost yesterday the threads might be dominated by a different type of user.....

After the UNC loss last month, people were asking, "When is Michigan going to win a big game on the road like this?"
The answer: "Saturday, January 13, 2018."
January 15th, 2018 at 1:16 AM ^
if we lost a road game against the number 4 team in the country. A game everyone expected M to lose (by varying amounts). Would have been a shrug and then let's beat Maryland at home because we're still looking pretty good, and oh that Tom Izzo guy is annoying.
Not only are you beating a dead horse, this isn't even the way to do it.

Of course Izzo went on a rant on a high school kid. Dude only cares about himself. That's what Johns sniffed that separates Izzo from a true, magnanimous leader like John Beilein.

It doesn't sound to me like Izzo was trying to give him a final sales pitch for MSU. By "rant" it sounds more like Izzo was yelling at him for chosing Michigan.

This is just step one in Tommy's toughness indoctrination. He can now go tell all his friends he let that 18 year "have it".
January 14th, 2018 at 9:40 PM ^
Going off on a 17 year old is a sure way to convince him he's making a mistake & should reconsider coming to your school.

Cool story bro and all that, but I recently dated a girl whose mom worked for the athletic department at MSU, and was a Michigan fan. I gave my opinions on the two big MSU coaches and she was like, "Nope, you've got it completely backwards. Dantonio, for as dickish as he is toward Michigan and humorless as he comes off in general, is actually a really decent guy who will say hi and look you in the eye sincerely. Izzo is a complete fucking asshole."

In fairness to her, I don't believe she was thinking about the big picture, i.e. how he runs his program and all that, I think she just meant how he is to people on a day-to-day basis. Izzo, on the other hand, is a jerk 99% of the time, she says.

Please tell us you married this one. She sounds incredible on so many levels. I can't even get my wife to glance at any sporting event unless you call ballet sports.

I lose more and more respect for this guy. The media makes this guy out to be a genius and when he wins, he's the greatest...Anything less and there is always an excuse, no accountability. Guy has zero class.

really was ever very warm to the Spartans.
Izzo saw a potential top 100 kid in his back yard and salivated and probably pouted that he wasn't interested. State didn't even bother sending anyone to his games from about the middle of his Jr. year on. Izzo probably doesn't think Johns gave him a fair shot.
Johns wanted something different than MSU, that was always obvious to me..
