35 Wolverines made final 53 man NFL rosters

Submitted by BTB grad on August 31st, 2022 at 10:49 PM

Random thoughts: Undrafted rookie Josh Ross made the final Ravens roster! Only 5 of the 35 active Wolverines didn’t play for Harbaugh (Brady, Clark, Graham, Henne, Lewan). 37 year old Henne heads into his 14th season (backup QB is quite the gig, keep collecting those checks!). Mone enters his 4th season in the NFL after going undrafted (signed a 2 year $12M extension this summer).

Full list:

  • QB Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • OL Ben Bredeson, New York Giants
  • LB Devin Bush, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • LS Camaron Cheeseman, Washington Commanders
  • DE Frank Clark, Kansas City Chiefs
  • OL Mason Cole, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • WR Nico Collins, Houston Texans

With Chad Henne hanging on, I believe there are more Wolverines who were coached by Carr still in the NFL (2 — Brady and Henne) than Rich Rod (1 — Lewan).  Did I miss anyone?

Yeah, Hurst is on the IR list for the year but by all accounts would have on the SF roster if not.  So that's good for him.

McGrone wasn't getting a ton of positive write-ups for the Patriots but still a bit surprised he got bumped down to the practice squad after only a year.

Interesting to see what a lack of offensive skill talent we’ve produced that has been able stock in the League. The later year Hoke recruits should be important veterans at this point.

It looks like the Steelers win the title of 2022 Michigan Alumni House with 4.  Kansas City (if we count Frank Clark) and New England are close seconds with 3.  Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Green Bay and Tennessee with 2 each.

Taco and Vincent made the Saints practice squad.

It was posted in the earlier thread but Hawkins and McGrone made the Pats practice squad as well.

Not often a fan of the way the NFL conducts player business, but the expanded practice squads seems like a good decision for the sport as a whole.

More practice squad guys:

Daylen Baldwin on the Brown's practice squad

Sean McKeon on the Cowboy's practice squad

Khaleke Hudson on the Commander's practice squad

It is always interesting to see how some guys who were never stars in college still succeed in the NFL for whatever reason, while some who were stars can’t cut it—but those are mostly Ohio State QBs.

I believe it was the purveyor of this blog who once wrote something very similar about Todd Collins many many moons ago. I'm dating myself.

Or... one Bama draft class!! haha.. just kidding.

Awesome to see guys filling out NFL rosters, hope we can keep adding to that finally for years and years after some slow times. Would love to see someone pick up the mantle from Tom.. JJ? Davis? Who's next!

What a career arc for B Graham. He was considered a bust early, then had injuries, then came on, and now is a wily vet!

In 2020, I wrote a Diary post which detailed all the pro accomplishments of every UM starting QB since Bo was hired.

I don't remember the exact words, but my summary of Carr's years were something like, "Carr sent EVERYONE to the NFL, even if all they got was a cup of coffee, or, if you're Drew Henson, a sad dose of reality."

The Moeller-Carr years were THE era to be a Michigan QB.

Four players on the Steelers; three on the Patriots and Chiefs. Two players on the Ravens, Browns, Packers, and Bengals. The rest are solitary animals.

For position groups -- 8 on the D-line, 8 on the O-line, and also 6 in the defensive backfield.

I can't resist a good pivot table. Or even a mediocre one!

Andrew Stueber is in the same status as Mo Hurst. On an injured/PUP list and not eligible to play until week 5 at the earliest, but the team doesn't have to release him as he doesn't count against the 53-man roster.

Most of what I read had him 50/50 to make the Patriots though I'm sure the injury didn't help.

Also looks like Patrick Omameh has ended what has to have been one of the more unexpected 8-9 year NFL careers. Congrats to him on finding all that success at the NFL level.

Trivia question- what was the most number of UM QBs in the NFL simultaneously?

I think it was 5 around 2001: Harbaugh, Grbac, Collins, Griese, and Brady. Hard to imagine we ever had more than that. At the time, it seemed it would last forever and you would always have multiple NFL teams to root for just based on a UM player involved in every play.
