Hello: Dylan McCaffrey Comment Count

Brian

Michigan has landed a commit from the top 2017 QB on their board, Dylan McCaffrey (Yes That McCaffrey). McCaffrey is the son of Ed and brother of Christian; he's 45th on the 247 composite, and the #2 pro-style QB in the country behind Clemson commit Hunter Johnston.

In McCaffrey, Michigan gets a 6'5" pocket passer with huge upside and excellent bloodlines; his early commit will hopefully allow him to recruit other gentlemen into the class. Michigan may still pursue a second quarterback in the class. If they do so he's likely to be a player like Gentry or Viramontes who could play another position if QB doesn't work out. More likely is that Michigan stands pat with McCaffrey and Peters in back to back classes.

but don't be surprised if Malzone seriously challenges for playing time this fall.

As of today, we know Taysom Hill is staying at BYU rather than take the possible grad transfer to Michigan.

O'Korn, by most accounts, was extremely impressive all last fall with the scout team.  I know coach Harbaugh is preaching open competition and daily improvement, but there isn't a lot of doubt it's O'Korn's job to lose.

I appreciate what Wilton Speight did to help us win the Little Brown Jug, but still don't seriously think he will ever see anything other than occasional mop-up duty in the future,

Shane Morris has the biggest arm but unless he ever gains any accuracy, I doubt he'll be a factor.  I had hope for him a long time ago, but always feared he might have been a little overrated as a recruit.

I'm intrigued by the tools Gentry brings, but  his lack of QB experience is going to be hard to overcome, regardless of his superior athleticism.   Both Peters and McCaffery are much more polished products coming out of high school than Gentry was.  We'll see him on the field somewhere, but unless he comes on like gangbusters this fall under the tutelage of HARBAUGH and his staff, his window of opportunity at QB might not be there a year down the road.

Brandon Peters has a ton of talent and a lot of polish as an incoming freshman.  He's also already on campus as an early enrollee, but barring unforseen circumstances, everything points to him taking a redshirt year this fall.

Which brings us to Malzone.  He came in as a Hoke recruit but stuck with the class when Hoke was replaced by Harbaugh.  He brought with him a reputation as a very accurate and heady QB, but clearly struggled in last year's spring game.  A lot of fans seemed to have written him off with no evidence other than what they saw in that  one spring game.   I seriously doubt he's done anything other than work hard in the weightroom, film study, and in practice, and I expect we'll see a ton of improvement this April and beyond.  While I doubt it'll be enough to overcome the experience edge O'Korn has, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see Malzone emerge as our backup QB.

p.s.:  I miss Rudock already!

Wow a great pickup. This is how you sustain a national championship team! O'Korn, followed by Peters followed by McCafferey. Top WR will be knocking on our doors soon!

Even though I'm sure he realizes there will always be competition, I wonder how Brandon Peters feels about this. Who will be the first QB to transfer?

Every major program brings in a quality qb every year. If he has to transfer, he wasn't cut out to be a big time player anyhow. It's about time we have enough qualities guys that freshmen and sophomores don't even think about playing.

Jake Rudock is likely going to end up on an NFL roster and I still wouldn't be surprised if he was drafted in the late rounds.

Why would a kid leave when they are about to get the type of coaching that can turn an Iowa castoff into an NFL QB?

I have no doubt that both Peters and McCaffrey see themselves as #1 QBs, sooner rather than later. Only one of them will be. If the winner proves to be successful, the other will be in for a multi-year rest period. Maybe either would be happy never seeing the field, but I also wouldn't blame a player for seeking an opportunity elsewhere that allowed him to play. Harbaugh loves competition, and may the best man win, but QB obviously isn't like other positions; only one can play. There are a lot of talented young QBs, which likely means the team will end up with a good QB, but not everyone will stick around for the duration.

Yeah, Max Browne redshirted at USC and sat behind Cody Kessler. Now, as a redshirt JR he's getting his first shot to start. He was the #1 QB coming out of HS. Now if McCaffrey passes Peters in a few years, then Peters might decide to bolt. But I doubt McCaffrey transfers just because there is another good QB on the roster.

Pretty amazing get considering Brandon Peters is right ahead of him.  I don't know who Stanford got out of this class of 2016 but damn it's nice to get 2 top 8-10 type QBs in back to back classes.  Hope no recruiting drama down the road with this one.

Like Magnus said, Stanford got Costello, the guys we wanted before we went after Peters. Peters may end up being better, and finished ranked ahead of Costello to at least one site, but Kostello was Harbaugh's first choice before he committed to Stanford.

I'd think that Papa Ed either has or will have some pretty good QB coaches working with his son. Bloodlines are great, but bloodlines with extra training are even better.

Not that anyone needs me to tell them this, but getting this kid is a big deal. Harbuagh is going to mold him into a heisman canadite.

For my ESPN home page, this news is the first of the "Top Headlines." That's what having Harbaugh in the news recently has done.  Made a Feb commitment of one of the top QBs a front page, top item.  Take the bad with the good I suppose (although very little has been bad, and it's been misconstrued).
