On Hoke

He didn't especially "win" at Ball St. or SDSU.
Ball St. - 43.4% win percentage vs. 52.4% historical for school (-9%)
SDSU - 52.0% win percentage vs. 53.6% historical for school (-1.6%)
Ball St. in 3 years prior to Brady Hoke:
2000: 5-6
2001: 5-6
2002: 6-6
Ball St. under Brady Hoke:
2003: 4-8
2004: 2-9
2005: 4-7
2006: 5-7
2007: 7-6
2008: 12-2
Hoke had one good season at Ball St. - he didn't have a career that was anything outside the historical norm fro Ball St.

Dear LSAClassOf2000,
This is exactly what I'm talking about. Not the thread itself but the general response to it. This fanbase is spoiled, entitled, and cancerous. These fans have nothing better to do than to launch classless personal attacks against a man who has done more for Michigan athletics in 3 years than they will do in their lifetime. These fans do not deserve victories, they deserve to be slapped in the face repeatedly until they learn some manners.
Brady Hoke is not the worst thing about Michigan Football--the fans are.

I feel like you've become really butthurt because you were sent to Bolivia. Take a break and enjoy the cocaine.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:08 AM ^
Hey, my cocaine problem is no laughing matter.

Does that make you 2X Angry, or Angry squared? If you really don't like the comments, you can always secede from the board. That strategy hasn't paid off for the Carolinas in the past, but...
(Sorry, couldn't resist. I know it's a cheap shot bringing up the War of Northern Aggression.)
November 24th, 2014 at 9:02 AM ^
Because slapping people in the face who don't agree with you is an example of good manners...
November 24th, 2014 at 9:06 AM ^
Actually, because Brady Hoke has been a net negative for Michigan football, pretty much every fan has done more for the program. You know, by not cratering it.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:14 AM ^
Brady Hoke did not crater the program. Have you forgotten 2008, 2009, and 2010 somehow? By all means the roster, even with its talent deficiencies at QB and WR next year, is in much better shape now than it was when Lloyd or RR were done.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:16 AM ^
Please. Hoke walked into a golden situation and destroyed it.
Rodriguez took all the lumps after Carr left the program in tatters (who was left from that 9-4 team? Especially on offense?) and Hoke got to sweep up the accolades once Rodriguez would have finally had a veteran team. And then he spent every year after it destroying Michigan football.
I'm sure the next guy will be fine because he recruited well (that's what will happen when you have the support of the AD and aren't always afraid to lose your job), but lets stop pretending like the world doesn't exist outside of Ann Arbor. Its pretty clear that all the anti-RR people were wrong and the ones who supported him were right.

How the hell do u not know why RR is. Stop being stupid.
November 24th, 2014 at 3:13 PM ^
uhhh..
November 24th, 2014 at 9:24 AM ^
This Hoke vs. RR thing is so old and tiresome. They both sucked. Lloyd and others should have supported the program better. BM should have payed better for cordinators. RR should have had a better defense even without Casteel. His offense should have performed better in big games. His 2011 team wasn't winning more than 8 games without a DC change.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:28 AM ^
>Hoke walked into a golden situation and destroyed it.
please tell me more about how Hoke destroyed the offensive line
>(that's what will happen when you have the support of the AD and aren't always afraid to lose your job)
lol, just lol
>Its pretty clear that all the anti-RR people were wrong and the ones who supported him were right.
no, it actually isn't. it's not that fucking simple man.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:36 AM ^
He pulled plenty of recruits from other schools in 2011. He could have done that with the OLine. He could have sought out transfers. He could have seen if there were any JUCOs available. He knew there was going to be a rough third year and he didn nothing to prepare for it.
He walked into a team returning 20 starters. That gave him a buffer to get ready for what he had to know would be a rough third year. He failed.
You think a lack of job security doesn't affect recruiting? What do you think is happening to this year's recruiting class right now.
Actually it is. RR+Casteel = Success. Its that fucking simple. Only our AD was too stupid to see it and decided Brady Hoke was the answer.

Brady Hoke walk in a sitution where he had donimate offense and Denard Robinson at QB.
Put it this way. RR had to rebuild the offense that lloyd carr left him with.
RR offense Rank from 2008-2010
2008-Rank 109
2009- Rank 70
2010-Rank 9
Then Hoke come in taking over RR Rank 9 offense in the country. That golden oppurtonity Hoke and Co walk in on and Destroyed it.
Brady Hoke Offense Rank from 2011-2014
2011-Rank- 41
2012-Rank-72
2013-Rank-80
2014-Ran-117
Tell me did Hoke destroyed the offense that RR basically built Hoke and Co to succeed in.
Or Poor coaching by Hoke and Co.
November 24th, 2014 at 5:07 PM ^
You should add the RR defensive rankings from 2008-2010 and compare it to BH to make it a fair comparison. RR cratered the defense at the same time he was building the offense, and BH did the opposite.

So your blaming Carr and RR for hoke mistake of building a football team.
Lloyd didnt leave RR capable team to build on which was the offense.
RR lelf a strong offenes at Brady Hoke Disposal.
Brady Hoke just regressed on offense for four fucking season.

As a minor note, we have sent a few folks to Bolivia for piling on the personal abuse when it comes to the staff and player in the last few weeks alone. This is something that goes beyond Hoke insofar as modding is concerned here - it is one thing to question in-game decisions or overall ability, but when it starts to get into character or worse, that's when the points start disappearing. We might not catch everyone, but the folks that have been caught are being dealt with.
As a note to the OP, this thread could go either way and might come down because it refers to a small but admittedly vociferous minority on the board, so it probably isn't necessary.

I'll bite:
I'm sure that Hoke in general is a good guy. This isn't really all that special, a lot of coaches are good guys.
However, we get people on here pretending Hoke is a saint. That, oh, how lucky these players are to be graced with his presence. Oh the men they will become (that they couldn't have become anywhere else because no one can mold young men like Brady Hoke).
But lets be real: When Shane Morris had a concussion, Saint Brady let Dave Brandon try to use one of his players in a cover-up and didn't say a damn word about it. At a big moment with his integrity at stake, he fell in line like a stooge. So forgive me for rolling my eyes at all this "Oh, don't tarnish the brother of Jesus' reputation with your internet comments".
As for his desire to win: Good. Lord. The guy has given up on multiple games this season. Its been obvious and disgusting. And as Brian has noted, he plays up the charade of pretending to continue trying long after he's given up. If he has a desire to win, he left it back in 2011.
I can't wait for him to be gone. He's an awful coach and I'm sure we can get someone in here who is a good person (though of course no one can touch Brady Hoke when it comes to goodness. Any such suggestion would be blasphemy!) and can actually do the job.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:32 AM ^
Hoke is a football coach hired for a ton of money to do one thing, win games while playing by the rules. Dealing with 18-23 year old kids is part of the job and is something that every college coach in the country has to deal with on a daily basis. Based on the number of kids who end up in trouble, Hoke has had his share of failure here also. Is it his fault? I have no idea, but i'm not about to consider him a replacement for Mother Teresa based on recent criminal issues from the likes of Lewan, York and now Clark and from the more than a few "team rules" issues that have surfaced in the past.
His teams' on-field performance, over the last two years, has been some of the worst in recent program history, and based on this simple fact, he needs to be dismissed. Based solely on performance metrics, he has not delivered and, from my perspective, is not up to the job.

I say this as a fellow who could use to lose a few pounds: There's no way Brady Hoke would've waked to Ann Arbor from San Diego.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:12 AM ^
I really just don't see that much of what the OP describes here. My girlfriend and Dad and stepmom can certainly testify that I had some choice, alcohol-assisted words for Hoke Saturday on the walk back to our tailgate, but you won't find any of them here. It's really not that hard to bottle it when you actually have to think about it and type it first, I think most people here do a pretty good job of that. It's not like this place is comparable to the comments section on an MLive or Detroit News article.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:58 AM ^
Home is a Saint or a complete A-hole, aside from biased puff pieces in the media
What I do know is that he isn't getting the most out of his players and that's hurting them in the long run.
Michigan also makes 3-10 brain fart plays a game, and that's on Hoke as well.
The good thing is that nobody is arguing for Hoke remaining employed, aside from Ohio fans.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:59 AM ^
for 45 years or so, and I can't recall EVER seeing a WR in motion run INTO a shotgun snap. That pretty much describes our execution under Hoke.
Love the guy, but gotta go man.
November 24th, 2014 at 10:34 AM ^
Is it acceptable, no. But it does happen, even with good teams. Move on.
November 24th, 2014 at 11:56 AM ^
I've seen it happen before, but not 60 times each week during FBS games. Using just your observations we should see at least one instance of it happening during a Michigan game every five years, and by the Michigan team every ten years.
That mistake, or the punt receivers banging into each other, 10 men on the field, blocks in the back, poorly thrown passes, not having back up QBs ready to play even when scheduled to start, dropped passes. Taken separately we can rationalize them as mistakes other teams make, but in totality they are indicative of a team in serious need of discipline and character.

Does that really matter if it was Funchess or Gardner? Fact is 1 or 2 guys fucks up every play......it never improves.

This post and the comments reinforce my decision to avoid the board like the plague following Saturday's result. I agree with everyone who's taken the position that personal attacks against the players and coaching staff are toxic/dumb/pointless etc. But in the meantime, ...
The weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is quite delightful,
And since we've nowhere to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
(Put another way, ambiguous OP titles like "On Hoke" are always going to garner clicks on here. So the "if you don't want to read a snowflake thread don't click on it" argument doesn't really work here.)

Straw man much? Very few people here have criticized Hoke's character. In fact, most are of the opinion that his personal character is perhaps his best attribute.
The fact that a few people may be attacking his character is meaningless. It's the internet, you are going to get a huge range of opinions on pretty much everything.
November 24th, 2014 at 9:42 AM ^
November 24th, 2014 at 9:44 AM ^
I don't think the majority of people on this site are attacking his character. It appears pretty unanimous everyone thinks he is a great guy but a turrible coach/player developer/game manager/etc etc. But thanks for your hot take!

When you are an entertainer that is part of the cost of failure. When you fail you are going to be the subject of derision. I would happily be paid several million dollars a if I only had to endure people insulting me and calling me virulent names. Whatever names are thrown at Hoke, first he will never know and second the terrible personal feelings of failure by a competetor is far greater. If names are worse than sticks & stones then being public figure is not for you.
November 24th, 2014 at 10:11 AM ^
These stop saying mean things about Hoke threads are the worst.
Guy has made more money at Michigan than most people will make in their lifetime. And, in my opinion, he hasn't earned 1/10 of it (while at Michigan).
I'm sure he'd be a nice guy to have a beer with, but I don't feel at all bad for criticizing him. Sorry.
