Pretty good, methinks. Not sure if it would even matter, if he were in track shorts and shoes, or full pads.

Not sure about the 100m, but he has been timed in the 4.4s at Schemy.

Pure Gold.....WINNING, DUH.

I've watched this guy since his days at GVSU. I don't recall ever seeing him blow a gasket like this. Maybe I've just missed it because: GVSU doesn't have TV cameras following every moment of the sidelines, I can't bring myself to care about Chippewa football to be able to watch more than a few minutes of any of their televised games, and Cincinnati is too close to Ohio for me to bear. ...Like what I did there? :)
But, that said, does anyone remember Kelly behaving like that at any of his previous stops? If not, I would think this is either a sign of him bending to the pressure, feeling like he's losing control of his players, or a mix of both.

He totally berated his kicker to the sideline reporter as he was interviewed before the half. I believe it was his last game at UC (right before he took the Notre Dame job). I was objective at the time and he came across as a huge jackass.

Can't stop watching the highlight reel from this game. It's just so good to see Michigan football again, especially since the game was shortened. Bring on Notre Dame!

Schofield at LG looked pretty solid run-blocking - 3 or 4 good blocks to open a hole. But in pass-pro, he got beaten easily on Denard's 12-yard scramble.
Great read by TGordon on the screen at 1:42.
Both of Kovacs sacks came on free runs (though he certainly finished both well). Chalk those up to Mattison's blitzes confusing/overloading the RG. To me, the more impressive play was his pass deflection.
Ryan's pressure on the INT looks even more impressive on the replay.
Can't wait to hear Brian's take on the UFR.

Toussaint, barring serious injury, will gain a lot of yards this year. His legs keep moving and he rolls down hill.
If you will forward on to the four minute mark on that highlight video above, pay attention to the movements of W.Mich LB #51. At the snap he takes an initial step outside of the hash, turning back at he sees the handoff. Stepping back towards the hole he steps in front of a charging Schofield, so we are already looking at a change in direction for this guy already.
Unluckily for our study, however, he attempts to follow his momentum around Schofield at the same moment Toussaint makes a move for the same space. He is then immediately deposited four yards downfield under the pile of his teammates that finally brought Toussaint down.
W Mich LB #51 wasn't dragged, pushed, or trucked. He was simply ignored.

coach at Michigan. Thank God he never got the chance. He looks like Charlie W's son.
September 4th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
Denard's pass to Koger over the middle scared me. I also think he could've hit Hemingway for a big one on that play too.
The gang-tackling and blitzing was great to watch. It was very encouraging watching the lads start to kick some ass there in the second half. We were also starting to completely crush Western when we were running the ball. It was a good tune-up for Our Lady.
Yeah, Kelly needs to chill out -- he looks like a complete a-hole. I hope that turns some recruits off.
September 4th, 2011 at 7:51 PM ^
Brian, will This Week in Schadenfreude be returning this year? Please say yes. A week one ND loss is kind of a gem considering the relatively tame college football weekend.
September 4th, 2011 at 7:59 PM ^
Coach Hoke used the term "that was good football to me".... which is a minor expression to use, but it is one that Bo and Woody both used back in the day... "that was good football right there" when describing a play... so perhaps that influence of Hokes dad playing for Woody and his exposure to Bo rubs off in certain small ways..
September 4th, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
Kelly has it in him to pull a Woody one day and slug an opposing player - you can just see it in that face.

maybe he'll break the yard markers this year.

Tried google to find out why Gibbons doesn't seem to be wearing knee pads sometimes. The guy next to me in the stands pointed it out and I couldn't think of a similar case. Can someone elaborate?

Can't wait til this is moved down the board.
Can't believe that some here (thankfully a few) are justifying his douchebaggery.
Can't wait to drop 40 on his defense next week.

coaches yell at players. always have, always will. this wasn't something that's never been seen before, do we really need to pretend that it was?
September 5th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
If you can't tell the difference between yelling "You can do better than THAT. THIS is how you do it!" and yelling "You're a fucking asshole!" I don't think I can help you.
Coaches should be passionate and occasionally angry, but they should be in control of their emotions. They should yell because it's the best way to get the response they need. Brian Kelly had clearly lost control of his emotions and was just screaming a string of profanity at a kid. Big difference.

may have been more savvy then we realize. We've avoided creating a whole 15 minutes worth of game film for our opponents, rested players, and avoided serious breakdowns or injuries. After seeing Brian Kelly melt down in spectacular fashion on national TV after the Fighting Irish turned the ball over for the third time in the red zone, down 16-0 to USF in Week 1, my optimism about next week is a little brighter.
I picked ND to win this year, and I can't go back on that prediction. I hope I'm wrong, and the good things we saw against Western carries over in a big way to Week 2. One issue that stuck out to me was some errors in kickoff coverage. If WMU special teams can keep getting the ball to the 40, that's a problem.
Now, how about we all enjoy a great win!
September 4th, 2011 at 10:37 PM ^
half our defensive starters are on that same terrible kick coverage? That's what scares me. We are risking our paper-thin depth and not getting results. Guh.
September 4th, 2011 at 10:55 PM ^
I think we just cheated Gardner out of reps. Odds are after we scored the second string was going to come in and close it out (mostly with a ground game due to the rain).
September 4th, 2011 at 10:35 PM ^
on the defense. We need to see how they play against non-scrubs. Since we won't see any non-scrubs for a while, I'll just settle for ND as a barometer.
But seriously, "great tackling" is pretty easy to do against a team like Western. Let's see how they do against actual players like Floyd. Kovacs may not make the sack on a mobile QB. Better O-Lines won't leave a free rusher untouched like that very often. Can we bring down good RBs like MSU has? These are the match-ups that will tell you if we have improved...not a game against Western.

Just noticed that the Grady pass at the end of the first may have been a mis-read by Denard. He had the top reciever, Hemingway (?), arm-wavingly, wide open in the end zone. Didn't matter since we scored, and Grady could have been the primary read. But man, the dude was open for 6.
Yes, I am nit-picking.
Also, plus 1 for the ref for a great block on the safety on Shaw's TD.

HOLD ON TO THE GO*DAMN BALL!
September 5th, 2011 at 2:24 AM ^
When Lewan was out for a while Schofield stayed at LG, Huyge moved to LT, and Mealer came in at RT. While either way makes for a lot of shifting, seems like it would have been keeping more in their natural spots by keeping Huyge at RT, sliding Scho to LT and inserting Mealer at G. I believe they kept a TE in tight with Mealer the whole time to protect him.

This kind of Behaviour is not good for both, him as well as for the team... as a coach you could be so cool to take right decissions...Small Business Funding
September 5th, 2011 at 7:32 AM ^
His sideline behavior while facing South Florida and letting Crist back onto the field against Michigan were unacceptable. The man doesn't appear to care about the kids he's coaching. I'm probably assuming way too much from limited information, but it just looks like a guy willing to do anything to cover his bum. What a sociopath, meign.

is indefensible. Could not agree more with the distinction made between berating and actually coaching. We're not playing croquet here, I get it, but we're also talking about building character in young men, something I'm delighted to hear from Hoke on a regular basis.

September 5th, 2011 at 10:52 AM ^
Great to see something resembling a defense on the field, even if the opponent's only WMU. Any time the defense outscores the other team that's good. /obvious
Not so good: at least 2 times on this highlight reel you hear the announcer say "...underthrows but the receiver comes back/gets it anyway". That's the sort of thing that turns into "underthrown and the ball is picked off" against a better defense.
September 5th, 2011 at 12:39 PM ^
Instead of "who cares" when the ND starters are announced -
The stadium should yell "are you f'ing kidding me" with each player
