Dan Wetzel posted a shot of Shelly Meyer crying on the sidelines after the win over Michigan. I hadn’t seen that shot until now, but that’s a pretty solid clue that the decision had been made at least prior to that game.

And I don’t think it’s that outlandish to think guys on the team knew ahead of time and could keep their mouth shut for a few weeks. Probably even why the news is coming out now instead of two weeks from now after the early signing period is over — there were already rumblings of this being it for him. May as well make it clear now.

While it's an interesting theory that the players already knew before The Game, I'm inclined to believe that it would have leaked out before now.

OTOH, I now believe in hindsight that his wife Shelley knew, as I recall seeing post-game her crying as they left the field and thinking it was a rather odd  reaction.  It crossed my mind immediately then that this might happen, but I thought more then that it was likely instead faux tears of relief after their roles in protecting the wife-beater Zach Smith.

(edit: beaten by I Like Burgers in posting this about seeing Shelley Meyer crying)

Agree there was a significant “Win one for the Gipper” vibe.  The Linebackers and Safeties were flying around like I had never seen from them this year and the whole team just seemed like they were buzzing with extra energy.  At the time I was thinking they had just saved it up for Michigan, but now I wonder if there was something even beyond that.  Frankly it makes me feel less hopeless about the game than I felt in the aftermath.

I agree with Carlos on when the decision was made. My immediate reaction when I saw the news was also that, to keep from being fired, he must have told the Board last summer that this would be his last year. I have no idea if the players knew before our game, but I wouldn't be surprised if they learned in the week leading up to it. I'm sure they were wondering about it the whole season.

Weird that they're not even attempting a nationwide search before handing it over to a thirty-something assistant with a pretty thin resume.  This is as big of a program as any in the country that isn't called Alabama, they should have pull.  They either really like Day or they're just going to take a Fickell year while they look for the perfect option.

Having 2 Heisman level players in your cupboard is a helluva way to start a career. Kevin Sumlin looked pretty good when he had one of those...

And Dabo was already established as an *elite* recruiter when he ascended to the job. Tommy Bowden era Clemson was a mediocre program...Dabo made that thing what it is. Waaaaay different situation than taking over  2019 Ohio State or 2017 Oklahoma.

And of course he's being replaced by Ryan Day, who spent a couple years on the BC staff defending against Don Brown in practice.

Whatever, he can't be as good as Meyer.

That "nobody" had 10 playoff appearances and four national championships at the 1-AA level at YSU, and had massive recruiting connections within the state that had been developed over his 15-year career at YSU. I'd say his resume compares quite favorably to Days prior to assuming their roles as OSUs head coach.

I'd actually bet that Urban does a Bill Snyder. He'll retire a few years. Ryan Day will be OSU's Bo Pelini in that he's perfectly acceptable but largely has 9-11 win seasons that the Buckeyes aren't happy with. OSU cuts him loose in 2021 and Urban comes back for a few more years

Urban is going to cast a Woody Hayes size shadow over the OSU head coaching job.  It took two coaches (Bruce and Cooper) to fail before someone (Tressel) stepped outside Woody's shadow.  Given Urbz 7-0 record vs. Michigan, any coach that loses to us will be deemed unacceptable and not worthy as a successor .  Could make for some interesting times until someone finds a way to get out from under his shadow which will be a long one.

Hmm, Ryan Day is the replacement. Ever notice how an Ohio State head coach's name has to have 10 letters or less?

Woody Hayes

Earle Bruce

Jim Tressel

Urban Meyer

Ryan Day

Then, of course, there was Luke Fickell. Eleven letters. Fans got confused. He had to go immediately.

Prediction head coach of Notre dame 2020. Kelly leaves for the nfl after next year. Wish we would have beat him, but glad to see him go as I did not think we would ever beat them as long as he was there.  I’m not saying he is a great person but the guy is a helluva coach and consistently wins big games.  Ryan day is a new young offensive mind and  sure the winning train won’t stop there but maybe just maybe we can out coach them now.
