OT: What's in your golf bag

Submitted by Couzen Rick's on July 14th, 2020 at 11:48 AM

Aight mgofriends, thread is as easy as the title. Bored in quarantine, and trying to get more into golf once our public health experts deem it safe. I'm a newb so my clubs are on the cheaper end, just curious to how our mgogolfers fill out their 14.

Here's mine:

-Wilson Ultra Driver

-Wilson Ultra 3 wood

-Adamsgolf Speedline Draw 5 wood

-Wilson Ultra 4 hybrid (21 deg)

-Slazenger v300 5 hybrid (25 deg)

-Wilson Ultra 5i-PW (PW has 46 deg loft)

-Wilson Harmonized Wedges (50 and 56 deg)

-Wilson Ultra putter

Would love if others share their tips/recs

As always, @mods delete if this is too OT.

Seems like a lot of clubs with potential for overlap between 5-wood, 4-hybrid, 5-hybrid, and 5-iron.  From the PW loft, it seems like your irons are fairly traditionally lofted, so maybe the hybrids are stronger and this all works for how you hit.  I would make sure of the gapping in this area of the bag.  For my own game, I would try to get rid of one of the hybrids or the 5-wood and add an additional wedge, but YMMV.  Lots of room for personal taste.

That's probably about right, but I usually try to fill distance gaps as the poster above mentioned. Is there a distance inside of 135 that you struggle more with? If so, try and find a wedge that allows you to put a full swing on it to meet that need.

I hit my PW 140 and have a 54-degree that I hit 110-115, but I struggled with 125 yards and that is right where I could hit a 50-degree...into the bag it went!

I would try to get a 60 if it was me, but I'm comfortable with that club and rely on my short game to get me out of trouble that my long game gets me into.  It depends on how you swing and what you're comfortable with.  Another wedge in the bag also allows you to vary bounce.  I like my 56 SW with lots of bounce for soft sand and when I'm in a crappy lie that I don't want to dig into.  I like much less loft on the 60 LW for tight/hard lies where digging in is less of a concern and I want the sole to sit as close to the ground as I can.  As stated by others, 1st priority is the gapping between clubs so you don't have too big of a gap between any two clubs and not so much overlap that would make a club largely redundant.  Hit a bunch balls with each club to know how far each will typically carry.  Space the gaps as uniformly as you can.  2nd is what are you comfortable with, particularly for the wedges around the green.

Great advice guys thanks! Yeah my bag is currently top heavy, I’m decent with my 3 wood and found a deal for the 5 wood used, so picked it up, but yeah definitely a lot of overlap to control for, I think my 5i is 27 deg so between that, the 5h and a 6i that’s 30 deg, have some room to take one of those in the middle out

I would pay more attention to the distance you actually hit them and less to the stated loft.  The hybrids probably have longer shafts and may have a different flex, so they could hit a different distance even if the stated loft was exactly the same.  But, that is where I'd start.  Cover the gap between 3-wood and 6-iron with one fewer club.  Ideally, leaving yourself with clubs that you are comfortable hitting and with reasonable yardage gaps between.  That buys you an extra wedge to help the short game.

A 7-year-old TaylorMade R1 driver (probably due for a replacement), Mizuno woods/irons/wedges (which I LOVE), and a cheap mallet putter.

I'm a 14 handicap, so I suck too much to spend much more money on my clubs.  Maybe if/when I get below a 10.

"suck too much"  I'd give a pinky toe for that 14 handicap right now.   Played a fair amount when I was younger.  Kids came along, hardly played for years.   Kids grown now and starting to play more.   And I am godawful.  I'm three weeks into a 15-week instruction program at GolfTec.  Really happy with the results so far.   The video of every swing is very valuable to me.   Swing and hands were way too steep.   Working on flattening out.   Feels really weird right now, but when I execute the flatter/inside path it I really love the results.

I've been playing since high school, and try to get out at least once a week in the summer. My game is pretty up and down, but I've been playing well the last few weeks and even made my first hole-in-one about a month ago!

Any recommendations on good Michigan courses south of Lansing that I need to check out? I've played The Grande and Moose Ridge (among other lesser quality courses), but am always looking to head north from Toledo for a change of scenery!

Hit 'em long and straight, my friends!

My dad recently moved to Grass Lake and the guy who used to be in charge of the Grande is now at Calderone which my dad said improved the course a ton. I played Calderone a few years ago and the greens were in terrible shape, but my dad said its been a 180 since.

I play a lot of golf. I'm old, and now a high single digit. I have two former Pros in the family, including a BIL who who played a few times on the PGA Tour. We all love the game, and are constantly talking about all aspects of it.

Recommendations depend on what you want to do. Do you want to lower your handicap and score as low as possible, or do you always want to try that 1/10 shot, and live with the consequences?

If the former, ditch the 5 wood and add a 60 degree wedge. Hitting greens with 5 wood, and then 1 putting is a rarity. You can use the 3, or a hybrid on the short par 4s and second shots on par 5s depending on the lie. Get accustomed to playing layups to preferred wedge yardages, and getting up and down from there, instead of forcing a lower percentage shot from greater distances.

Make certain your wedges have the appropriate bounce for the conditions you see the most. So many new golfers make the mistake of playing too much dig in soft conditions, or worse, too much bounce in hard conditions. The games hard enough without making it harder on yourself.

The same is true with face balanced vs toe hang putters. Make sure you have one that matches your intended technique.

I use a TM M1 driver and 3W. TM M1 hybrids. 20 y. o. Mizuno 5-9 forged irons. Vokey 48, 52, 56, and 60. I putt with a face balanced SC Futura that's about 20 years old. It looks wacky, but I putt great with it, both long and short putts.

Above all, keep fun in the bag! So many people that suck take it so seriously. And in the scheme of things, if you're not a plus HC tournament golfer, you suck. As Arnold Palmer once wrote: "There's golf, and then there's tournament golf. The two have very little in common."

You can also think about the courses you play the most and how often you need a club.

I keep a 1 iron in place of a 60 degrees wedge because my course has a lot of trees with overhanging limbs that I can’t hit a draw around so I need to go under. At the same time I have very few occasions to need a 60 degree wedge just by means of course management.
