OT: Hail and Unite Pitch at Alumni Association Event
Tonight I went to the Alumni Association event for the Greater Detroit club since I moved back to the area recently.
The leader of the Hail and Unite venture, Mike Weinberg pitched the idea to the group of 25-30. Key points:
-Vision for this idea stemmed from "We are the World" song
-Not meant to replace what exists
-Meant to combine student efforts and musicians "connected" to the university
-Will be crowdfunded
-Weinberg will be presenting this to the Chicago and Los Angeles Alumni Associations, probably others as well, but those were the only ones listed
I know it's a controversial subject here; I write this post just to notify those headed to future Alumni Association gatherings.
For those keeping track, I despise this idea.

His Public Answer: To help unite the university and grow the common bond we all share....
Real Answer: It looks AWESOME when I put it on my resume. The investment banks will definitely hire me!

Michigan grads in investment banking (scratch that... just all Michigan fans): remember this guy's name and tell your HR department to put every resume he sends in the SHRED pile.

A group of Chicago alums get together, go to he event there, and boo him off the stage, chant TRANSFER,TRANSFER,TRANSFER, and throw marshmallows at him. This idea really needs to die a slow and painful death. Chicago alums step up for Michigan.
Not an alum, but I love this idea. I'll even bring the marshmallows.

Their webpage says they are creating 2 versions... one regular and one for the band. I hope this gets booed mercilessly at the big house if the band is ever fucking stupid enough to play it.

As an alternative option, it looks like you can comment on and/or downvote their crowdfunding YouTube video. Direct link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0ykRad3uRA

We Are the World? Really? Frank Zappa had an opinion about We Are the World back in 1987: "Are there any lyrics I don't want my kids hearing? Yeah, 'We Are the World'."

Don't shoot any messengers. We want people reporting on this. These guys are like cockroaches - they don't go down easily.

With songs there are dozens if not hundreds of bad ones for every good one. Even great artists put out several crappy songs for every great one. That's why this idea sucks- the chances of it succeeding and sounding good in the Big House are very low. No one wants to hear it. The idea sounds very corny and superficial.
Nickelback skews that ratio to hundreds if not thousands.

I don't get why you're still ranting all the time about Hoke when he's been relieved of his duties, and replaced by freaking JIM HARBAUGH.
If you really hate Hoke that much, look at it this way: for a failed coaching tenure, it was about the best-case scenario. He recruited very well, leaving his successor with a well-stocked roster, and his tenure unraveled at the perfect time, when the ultimate coach became available.
As for this song, until we get confirmation that the project is dead, people need to keep the pressure on.
There is not much to bitch about now that DB, and Hoke are gone. We have been bitching and complaining for so long it is almost like breathing. Some of us start to turn purple if we haven't bitched about something for more than a day. So we bitch about this, because a kid making a song is just about as evil as you can get...

I would do something about the Hoke hire, but my time machine is still in the shop.

-Completely ignoring the reality that no one likes their idea. Cough- Dave Brandon- Cough.
-The irony that a song called Hail and Unite has caused a huge controversy.
- They're arrogance and condescending tone when they've been questioned. Dave Brandonesque here as well.
-The fact that they are clearly in this for a resume boost. I'm a business major and you couldn't pay me enough to try to have a song compete with the Victors- there are some things that are sacred. It's wrong in principle.
Given the recent history with Brandon, this ought to be given up, but if they are this persistent they may be lucky and get it played in the big house, to which I will consider booing.

I'd say that everyone has united against this dumb fucking idea except the anus who came up with it.

Some of us have more productive things to do with our day than stomping our feet because someone want's to do something that we might not agree with.
In solidarity with my hipster friends this guy is not a hipster. Just sayin'

Fail and UMight. Like a bad tattoo, it won't go away.
Why does this thing need crowdfunding (or existance for that matter)? How much does it cost to write a song or approach a musician?
Ohhhh! I get it.... that's not the idea. The idea is to buy a song, have a famous person sing it (for money), then have the Weinberg name connected to the new tradition for Weinberg's benefit. As I've written on these pages before, this is the last thing a Michigan Man thing one would do.
Didn't someone try to change the mascot from Wolverine to Whitetail Deer citing it as our state animal in the mid 70's? This reminds me of that.

He's from out of state and his name is "Mike Weinberg"
You decide.

These guys make Dave Brandon look self-aware and cognizant of public opinion by comparison

It's not nearly as controversial as I first thought. Let's just hope it doesn't turn into a 'We are ND' or similar.
If it's going to be done, it needs to be done well.
March 20th, 2015 at 12:30 PM ^
You must have missed the first video he made where they chug beer and party, with no mention of a song. Or words.
I'd say it's worse than "We are ND"

It's a pump up song guys. For when you are on the way to the gym or studying for a midterm. Be a part of music history.
So many buzzwords in that video. And the editing was pretty bad between takes.

The mere presence of Jim Harbaugh in the big house will prevent any Johnny-come-lately nonsense song from ever taking hold there. That said, I love the "kill it with fire" GIFs and wish we could somehow splice one of those onto a picture of this cretin's head.
March 20th, 2015 at 10:50 AM ^
It sounds like the AD shot down any chance of this "song" being affiliated with the atheltic department in any way. There's pretty much no mention of trying to get the song played in the big house anymore.
This is now just a song to listen to "on the way to the gym." This guy is a true visionary.
has a song even been created yet?
I thought we were still in the "give me a shit-ton of $ to get this started" phase.
or are we now into the "I've gotten a shit-ton of $ from some suckers & now I'll sell it (and myself) to whoever will listen while still having no product" phase.
followed by the "hey piano hack, here's $100 to write the next great Michigan song- you have until tuesday" phase.
resulting in the "I'm sorry this awesome creative venture has to be put on hold -but I'll put the remaing crowdsourced 50k to "good use" phase.

Yeesh. The backlash here is a bit way over the top. There's a way to strongly and justifiably disagree with someone/something and still show respect. It appears that many on this board don't understand that distinction.
I'm in agreement. It's almost like people see "Hail and Unite" and completely lose the ability to think rationally.

I thought that "Lochdogg the Walking Buzzword" packed up and took his show to Phoenix.
You know, he doesn't need a "crowdfund". He can just use all those royalties he's getting from Home Alone 4....oh, wait- nevermind.
