OT - Go Irish!
I see the predictions thread but want to branch off in a different direction with this topic.
Life long Michigan fan who is pulling for Notre Dame!
Why you ask?
Because I live in the South and while I enjoy the living here, I do not like the football mentality. The idea that the whole ESS EEE SEE conference is somehow interconnected.
I have always simply rooted for Michigan and while happy that other Big 10 teams did well in bowl games, I would never feel a sort of pride. I most certainly did not stick my chest out in 2002 when OSU won the BCS title and proudly proclaim to all my southern friends BIG 11! BIG 11! BIG 11! or some other rediculously sounding chant. Michigan didn't win the National Championship that year so nothing else mattered.
The states that I have lived in Kentucky and Tennesee has not done crap for years. Kentucky hasn't had a winning football tradition and the Vols have been in turmoil since they fired Fulmer. Does that stop the rabid college fans from boasting their pride despite their actual TEAM not winning JACK SQUAT? NOPE! For these group of states for some reason like to stick together. They were in my face when OSU lost to Florida and LSU, did I give one crap that OSU lost? NOPE! But I still had to hear it day in and day out when the topic of football came up.
Am I happy or proud to root for the Irish? No! Am I sick of hearing about SEC pride day in and day out by fans who don't give a crap about Alabama any other day of the year? YES!
I would rather have ND fans boast again and see Michigan thump the reigning national champions next year and for one year atleast have some peace regarding the SEC.
So for one night, GO IRISH!

in Atlanta the last 9 years. An Irish victory will do little to stem the tribalism and triumphalism of the typical SEC fan, I suspect. Will take repeated National Championships by other conferences/teams over several years to change the tune. And even then, it may not sway opinion.
Despise ND. So Roll Tide.

In an ideal world, computer simulations of this game would look like the last scene in "Wargames".
"A strange game. The only winning move is not to play."
As this is not an ideal world, ND's chances are not promising.

Get this shit out of here. i want to never see this on my blog again, unless it's in jest for something stupid ND has done.
Now that you've said this, I hope Alabama wins by twice as much as I did before. Doubly infinity.
January 7th, 2013 at 6:23 PM ^
I absolutely can't stand the SECC hype machine. However, I believe its annoyingness would only pale in comparison to the ND hype machine/haughty ND fans everywhere. That's why I must say it, begrudgingly so...ROLL TIDE
Also, as I learned at the Dallas game, the Bama fans are for the most part incredibly nice (albiet a bit arrogant—can you blame them). Can't say as much for ND fans though.

No TRUE Michigan fan should cheer for the Irish tonight, thinking about cheering for the Irish makes me sick to my stomach. Would you cheer for Michigan State or Ohio in the NC?
January 7th, 2013 at 6:29 PM ^
I would cheer for OSU and MSU long long long before I would ever cheer for Notre Dame. They think they are God's gift to the world. They need to be stomped on and embarrassed.
January 7th, 2013 at 6:34 PM ^
Probably thinks ND fans are arrogant. He is probably a BC fan given their colors are more Papal or Germanic whichever you prefer.

I hate ND as much as any other guy on this blog but I sort of agree with the OPs sentiment. Now I wouldn't go so far as to title the post "Go Irish!", but I do hope they beat Alabama even if I will have to take an hour long shower afterwards.
The entire SEC infuriates me and as a whole really has no redeeming qualities like ND does (sorta). Yes, ND fans are annoying as shit, and we are rivals, and we all hate them etc etc, but I don't think they are cheaters like I do SEC teams, and they actually hold their athletes to some sort of standard academically and in society. I am seriously so sick and f'ing tired of the SEC superiority the media perpetuates and the idiots down south latch on to that I have resorted to the sickening thought of rooting for ND.
Ohio is the only team I would not root for over an SEC team in the MNC at this point in time. I just want the SEC to go down, hard, no matter the costs such as rooting for ND (with the aforementioned exception of rooting for tsio).
It should be noted that I was born and raised in Ann Arbor and have been a diehard Michigan fan for as long as I can remember. Thus, while there is certainly no way one can challenge my Michigan fandom I may be slightly more sheltered from obnoxious ND fans than some and thus hate them less. I have really only known a few ND fans in my life excluding people you come across for two seconds on gameday.

Both of my grandfathers were Irish fans so there is some residual affection for the Irish. But the thought of Lou Holtz drowning Reece Davis in spittle in the event of an Irish victory makes me want to cheer for the Tide if for no other reason than to spare Davis his life.
But then I think how sweet it will be to watch Devin and Devin to go ham on ND in UTL Part Duex. Watching Michigan blast the defending national champs would be much sweeter than watching them curb stomp the runners up. I also would feel a little better about Michigan being annihiliated by Bama if the Tide repeat the performance versus ND.

I live in "ND territory" i suppose being in Chicago. Aside from "END SEC REIGN" and "ND FANS WOULD BE INSUFFERABLE" it kind of sucks to feel this way but I feel like ND doesn't deserve to be in this game because they had so many close calls that went their way (Pitt field goal, stanford no TD, USC Barkley is out...). If they win I am just going to quietly shake my head (also because I am watching the game with a bunch of my ND friends).

This is one of the three dirtiest programs in college football taking on a team that has an obnoxious, entitled fanbase, but generally follows the rules. In this matchup, ND really does stand for what's right about the game.
There won't be much passion behind it, but I will be pulling for ND.

I have never heard anything similar about the Rockne, Leahy, and Parseghian squads. ND has, for the most part, been an upstanding citizen.
January 7th, 2013 at 6:31 PM ^
The whole SEC dominance thing is temporary. If Notre somehow wins this NC then Domer fans will be bragging about this shit for at least 20 years and it hurts recruiting for us. Even mildly rooting for ND is stupid, so stupid.
January 7th, 2013 at 6:35 PM ^
Roll Tide!
The day I root for Notre Dame... I will have officially lost my damn mind.

I can't even bring my self to say it. Man I hate Notre Dame.
January 7th, 2013 at 7:04 PM ^
A 40+ point margin would be nice.
January 7th, 2013 at 7:06 PM ^
Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent.

cue the Anchorman "that escalated quickly" meme for this thread.

If they win, ND basically catches us for the all-time win %.
NO.

Never thought I'd see the day "Go Irish" would appear on MGoBlog.
To hell with Notre Dame. To hell with Brian Kelly. To hell with the leprechaun guy. To hell with those dudes who wear plaid skirts and play bag pipes, or whatever the hell they do. To hell with their small scale immitation stadium, their fans, their alumni, and every single ESPN analyst who has kissed their ass...basically all of them.

I work in Mississippi now after graduating from Michigan. Everyday I get asked when am I going to switch to cheering for a good conference and root for the SEC. They always bring up 7 in a row. I would gladly let them tell me everyday 8 in a row for the SEC and how bad is the B1G conference rather than let ND win.
January 7th, 2013 at 7:54 PM ^
What the hell is this?
January 7th, 2013 at 7:57 PM ^
I'm with most of you. We've already lived with years of SEC dominance hype; I don't see any reason to trade it for far more irritating, less grounded in reality ND hype. The devil you know and all that jazz.
This pretty much sums up my relationship with the Tide tonight:
January 7th, 2013 at 8:02 PM ^
Terrible. I'd downvote you 50 if I could. ND is a rival for recruits as well as overall best national program of all time, win percentage, wins, etc. Not to mention having to deal with way more insufferable ND fans in Michigan, Chicago, etc. To root for ND in this game is beyond unwise.
January 7th, 2013 at 8:24 PM ^
You should be banned for writing this shit on this website.
Fuck notre dame, they will get steamrolled by 50.

The thing that bothers me the most about Alabama is that in the face of all kinds of different offenses and defenses, they are winning big games and national titles doing exactly what Michigan used to do. They play great defense, have a big O-line and a big RB that sets up big playaction, and they don't turn the ball over. I know that is what UM is transitioning to, but I just wish that we looked back in the record books and saw that Michigan did those things instead of Alabama.
