Matt Rhule on losing 45-7, losses to Minnesota and Michigan State

Submitted by DesertDog on November 6th, 2023 at 1:39 PM

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule: "I feel bad for our players. We’re sitting at 5-4. We own 5-4. But we have one game where the team scouted us. We have two games where the replay was wrong."

Replay was handled wrong, he said, in awarding touchdowns to Minnesota and Michigan State.

Depends on the situation.  Rhule has probably already exceeded expectations at Nebraska.  I think everyone expected a true "year 0" and he's got a good shot at getting to a bowl game, which would be huge for that program.  The fans weren't going to "riot" because they lost to a top-4 team, Nebraska fans aren't THAT delusional.  And they're not delusional enough to think that any advance scouting* would have made up a 5 TD difference.

*Did CS even advance scout Nebraska, allegedly?  I feel like even HE would have some standard and ignore opponents below a certain threshold, and I feel like Nebraska might have not been worth the effort.

He didn't really say that. There's no way he really said that, right? I have to believe this is an Onion-type article.

Then again, I was at that game in Lincoln. The more I think about it, the more I seem to remember saying to myself, "Wow, this is an 8-1 team if I ever saw one."

When Nebraska joined, I thought there would be a natural rivalry due to the 97 shared national championship.  And to start, there was. But man did they fall off the wagon fast.  Frost tried so hard to go at Michigan and failed miserably.  Now Rhule seems to think it's a good idea. Why do they keep trying to make this a thing?  It's weird that OSU has pretty much dominated the BIG for almost 20 years, and yet every team has a vendetta against Michigan.  Most of the top viewed games last year were Michigan games.  I am guessing PSU and OSU will be the same.  I'm guessing Fox does not want to lose Michigan to anything, so no idea why the BIG would want to do anything to lose Michigan.  A good Michigan means money for everyone.

I was at the game (along with 90,000 other fans) and scouting didn't have dick shit to do with the outcome of that game. You'd have to be a liar or a complete imbecile to believe otherwise.

I think Matt Rhule is a good coach but Nebraska is sort of a whiny program going back years now (Bo Pelini loved to rant in the media and we all know about Frost) so now a shock Rhule would be caught up in it.  At this point the loser talk is sort of seeped into the carpet.

Also, you can tell he's trying to deflect some blame for being the guy who picked up Jeff Sims in the portal for no earthly reason and then having to go to his backup because Sims was atrocious.  A better coach would have beaten Colorado, this shitty MSU team, and Minnesota.

Anyway, congrats to Nebraska for nearly beating MSU and giving them maybe their only Big 10 win this year.

I think he's a legitimately good college coach, and while Frost underperformed for years at Nebraska getting them to bowl eligibility is still on the table and that's good for a team that hasn't been in years.

But I also think the Big 10 is way harder than the Big 12 was when he was a Baylor, mostly because Nebraska isn't going to have access to better players the way Baylor did compared to a lot of the other teams in the conference, and so his ceiling is probably still only 8-9 wins most years.

Sadly, have to add Rhule to the list of people I've lost some respect for through this. He has seemed like a decent dude. But joining the mob and saying "we own this record" followed up with silly excuses is the definition of not owning it.

I have translated from Rhule-ese to English

”We’d be 8-1 if we didn’t get totally screwed over by everyone all the time. It’s everything else’s fault we’re not 9-0. I mean, it’s obvious we’re doing everything right and we’d be 15-0 this year if everything was totally fair. I mean 22-0 is right there for us if everyone wasn’t actively cheating. None of this is my fault.”

This is……truly pathetic.

OTOH, I can understand how losing to this year’s edition of MSU would leave one filled with self doubt, and grasping at straws……

Surprised he didn’t invoke the standard excuse…..our tunnel.

Well, advanced scouting is clearly worth at least 50 points a game so ya never know.

It's really shitty how the BS of modern culture has bled in to football now. Coaches used to, for the most part, STFU and feel some level of pride. Everyone knows things but it usually stays among the fraternity of coaches. Rather than appear to look or sound like a pussy you'd harden yourself and seek revenge on the field.

These bitchmade coaches talking like Stalions was worth a million points a game is just so comically pathetic. Definition of bitchmade.

I guess it's inevitable when a coach making $4-12M a year has to justify why he got his shit pushed in by Michigan. Why take any responsibility when you can just join in the mob, point and say "our 30+ point loss to them is because they knew exactly what we were doing".

If we pretend their fantasy land it's real for a second, they say this shit not even realizing what a self-own it is to have either not noticed it for a full game or they did notice but were too inept to simply change signals or huddle in order to combat it at all. To not even be able to combat it to a degree that made the game vaguely competitive should cost you your $4-12M a year job if that's the case and your fantasyland bullshit were true.

So after saying in his press conference a couple weeks ago that "everyone steals signs", Matt joins the feeding frenzy.

All these MF's have an opportunity to beat Michigan on the field.  Instead, they choose to blame sign stealing; a practice that is otherwise accepted around college football.  Did Stalions go way overboard? Undoubtedly.   But at the end of the day, are you a little pregnant or all the way pregnant?

I fail to see how he's "owning 5-4" when he steps up to the microphone and blames someone else for losing by six scores.

Sounds like you're not owning it, Rhule.....

At a certain point, its not about sign stealing. Its about the fact that you have a bad football team.

I'm not sure about Schiano. I mean, obviously he has the OSU connection...but he doesn't strike me as the whiny bitchmade type like the other coaches on this list. I think he has a bit more respect for Harbaugh and the program he has built, and can appreciate that this sort of rule-bending gamesmanship is going on everywhere. He wasnt that far off from being the HC of Michigan at one time (boy, butterfly effect that one lol)

Of course, he could just be like all the other OSU stooges too.
