yourself 1000 times stars don't matter, does not make it true. This kid may turn out to be great, but he needs a couple years of development to get on the field. We need kids who can almost play right away, we are losing most of our 2 deep this year. He is a BC kid and BC has had some great defenses, but don't act like they could compete with OSU and Bama like we need to do.

They will come.  Anyone that ends up in our class will work hard, get the best coaching and academics, rock the Big House and get the best fan support in college football.

Whatever you feel about this guys ranking class size has to be a concern at this point.  We are in the low 20's of available spots, so need some unexpected attrition to get the high 20's that people are projecting for this class size and we have less than 10 spots left and way more than 10 guys still on the board who will be takes.  The roster crunch is concerning to me.

In this case being good at roster managmenent has included telling kids who have been committed they aren't good enough anymore because Michigan can get someone better.  I'm not comfortable with that.  Don't accept a commitment if someone else you are recruiting committing means they don't get the spot.  If you think a kid needs to continue progressing don't accept their commitment as a junior.

My gut reaction...I always want Michigan to get the cream off the crop...off the charts athletes who are incredible football players with 5-star ratings and NFL hall of fame potential.

Those who are concerned about 3-stars have a valid point -- we DO need a constant influx of a significant amount of top end talent to compete with Alabama and OSU.

At the same time, Harbaugh, Brown, et. al. have shown that they know have to make use of just about every single player on the roster, including walk-ons...so there's seems to be room for players who may excel in specialized or more limited roles.  (Is there anyone who doesn't love Bobby Henderson right now?  I don't think he's even earned a snap yet when the game is close, but I have he can get the job done if/when called upon.)

I don't think it's a question of 247's vs. Harbaugh's judgment.

It's a question about how to build a team that competes at the highest level year in and year out.

I think Harbaugh has earned a pass on that question for now.  If 3 years from now we're clearly not in OSU or Alabama's league and guys like Curtis Samuel are running circles around our defense or Alabama's d-line is blowing up our blocking and burying our QBs, then it's time to start getting critical.

Neat history: Paye (if/when he signs) will be only the 4th player in Michigan history from Rhode Island.

First since 1952. 2 of 3 were on national championship teams.

star gazing versus Don Brown's evaluation....really?  You realize Benjamin St. Juste was a virtual unknown prior to UM offer and is now a consensus 4*.   In Don We Trust

The only thing that surprises me about the commitment is that I had an assumption that Jeter took his spot based off the number of DL recruits already committed and the fact that Tufele definitely has a spot still. No clue how the heck we will get all these other dudes in this class. This is going to be an insane end to the 2017 recruiting cycle. Should be a fun ride, folks! Welcome, Kwity!

From reading the comments there seems to be a points of view that can be boiled down into two notions:

1. There are some kids that may not be rating out as "great" or "elite" right now but have some favorable tangibles and intangibles. They may be very big or have a long reach. They need more coaching, development and training but could develop into someone really "great" - i.e. junior or senior year. Programs that are established can take a flyer on this type of recruit. I know that this smacks of the same type of argument that led to the drafting of Darko Milicic but at least one can see the calculations.

2. There are some kids that are grading out as "great" or "elite" now and the expectations is that they can help us as a freshman or redshirt freshman - i.e. soon. This is seen most of all in MBB with one-and-doners and Juco - suspect for example Dantonio will be raiding Jucos this summer. He can't afford another disastrous year.

Thanks to Harbaugh and his team, the Wolverines are probably able to take some kids in the former category. Maybe they see something in this kid that is worth taking a spot.

Finally the rating systems are more subjective than many would like to believe and recruiting is just one part of the process (an important part but still one part). We've seen 5 star rated players not work out because each level requires more personal responsibility, determination and self-motivation. For some kids they top out after high school and others only when they hit the NFL. The success of the Wolverines this year and how far many of the players have developed over the past two years demonstrate this. By analogy, a great chef could turn a box of ingredients into a great meal and others could turn it into something burnt and foul tasting that ends up in the garbage disposal.

So I'm excited for Paye, but I have such a fear that we're going to move into the greyshirt Alabama world of recruiting.

I trust that the coaches know the players that will fit best into our system, but this is our 18th Commit.

What happens if we hit on half of the remaining targets? Wilson, Wills, DPJ, Martin, Collins, Filiaga, a possible flip of Leatherwood or Harris, Tufele, Ruiz, Browning, Holmes, Tufele, Ambry Thomas, Singleton, Kelly-Powell, Akers, (and more... ).

Do we have room in this class for 30 players? I despise the idea of becoming a school that doesn't honor its offers and commitments to players.

I guess I just have no idea what kind of room we're working with for this next year. Anyone have some insight on that or know where I could find good resources to see those numbers?
