Gus Malzahn Has The Only Appropriate Response To M's Spring Florida Visit

Submitted by RyGuy on

I hadn't seen this on the board, yet, and I appreciated it-

When asked about Michigan's spring practice trip to Florida, Gus Malzahn responded with the most apropos response I've heard so far:

"Yeah, whatever."

I'd be worried, but I wouldn't really say anything here.  It isn't against the rules, it isn't behind-the-scenes in any way, and all it does is force you to make up these tortured arguments about the sanctity of sports and the impressionable nature of college athletes to justify why you don't like it.  I'm sure Malzahn responded with a certain degree of annoyance at the question because I'm sure it annoys him that Harbaugh is recruiting in a hotbed nearby, but that's probably enough.

this fine site that Brian has provided, realize the next time the SEC moves in a manner where it's indispitubable they have the players' best interest in mind, it will be the first time they've ever done so.

The very fact that Skankey actually uttered a concern for the necessity of the players fo be clear of football to maintain some sort of balance, or whatever the words used, came on the heels of another SEC NC, prepped for and played during, not once, but twice, that very period called winter break, was the moment he lost all credibility. Fellow commissioners, college coaches from across the nation, fans from every conference immediately called "Bullshit," and like me, I was not astounded because it is the SEC we're speaking of, but somewhat surprised that he could expect all those groups to simply forget the fact what the SEC promotes as their advantage - producing champions, with the ovious hypocriscy that comes with it, simply because it, much more than a 4 day trip does, takes away far more personal time than any thing Harbaubh has dreamed of to this point is indefensible. The only surprise, imo, is that someone down there in "Godd Ole Boy" territory didn't warn him about getting in a war of words against those that actually are aware of the definition of the majority of the words he might choose to use.

SEC = all that is wrong and having a mouthpiece espouse bullshit as transparent as a deuce viewed through saran wrap does not, imo, diminish the level of ignorance they will sink to. But hey, good for them. Urban served notice. More to follow peckerwoods.

having spring practice for a few days down in Florida is going to have minimal recruiting influence.   Kids are going to continue to make decisions based on the usual factors:  being close or far from home, the program's general trajectory, how they fit into the offense or defense, their relationship with the coaches, facilities, etc.  Yeah they can go watch a practice at IMG, but they will see the teams they are interested in in person on official visits.   I would say though that the bigger benefit to Michigan is all the attention the media is giving the program because we're the first school to do it.

"Yeah, whatever" sounds like the correct attitude for a coach who took his team from national title contender to a 7-6 record last season.

You just shut your damn pie hole. Texas is awesome!

Not ALL of Texas, but Austin, San Antonio, Ft Worth, Corpus Christi, South Padre, Galveston/Clear Lake, Fredericksburg, Hill Country, and Lockhart are all pretty incredible.

That just leaves Dallas, El Paso, and the greater Houston area (minus Clear Lake) as wastelands devoid of God's love.

Also, the water tastes and smells like dirt.  And they have tornadoes that get like a mile wide (as I understand it those happen every day).

Much of the state seems to catch fire quite often as well.

You're seeing this from the wrong perspective. Here's a simple question: "What do women wear in places where the average temperature approaches the boiling point of iron?"

Correct answer: Not much of anything.

See what I mean? It's all in your point of view.

when they're hurtling at you in a swirling death vortex at 250mph?

I will say that the few times I've visited Texas I've always had a good time.  The water thing really does bother me when I travel anywhere that uses ground water instead of surface water.  I never feel clean after a shower.

/I have a great Dallas stripper story for another time.

Now, look, when the death vortices approach, people head underground. The lights go out. People huddle together for mutual protection. That sounds like a good way to enjoy all "those gorgeous bodies!"

As for Texas water, it isn't great - but Florida water is downright terrible. It's the worst I've ever consumed in the U.S. Every time I'm there, I wind up using bottled water to brush my teeth because the smell and taste of the sludge out of the tap is too much like the product in Flint.

Have to agree with you on Dallas. I went to high school there (step father's job moved us from "up North"). Can't even begin to describe the culture shock. I remember driving to school every morning and seeing girls in cars with big hot rollers in their hair, putting on eyeliner, mascara, lips gloss, blush -- full on-camera makeup -- at the red lights. Every day was like a Dance Mom's beauty pageant.

Auburn's O-line situation in 2013 was very similar to Michigan's. Malzahn simplified his offense to like 5 or 6 base plays that allowed the line to play to its strengths. Michigan, on the other hand, went through the season calling plays as if they had the '93 Dallas Cowboys' line out there and failed to adjust when it became apparent that the O-line was a massive weakness, not a strength.

And had they done this from the start, nobody would be talking about Michigan, at least not to this degree. That's the beauty of Sankey's "think of the children!" Bs.

What's going to happen when we've officially got feedback from every single SEC coach about Harbaugh taking the team to Florida? Start asking their wives?

This seems like last year's Deflate-gate in terms of a story that will get daily updates every day for about a year. When we kick off the season against Hawaii at the big house, I half expect the commentators to be talking about spring practice in Florida more than what's going on in the actual game.

The Brad Stevens to college post is driving me a little crazy.  I see posts are being added, but for some reason I can't view it.  Can anybody else view it?  I  am a big Beilein fan, but Brad Stevens is the best in the business.  I think he would be a terrific fit at Michigan and it would be worth backing the truck up to pay him if the timing worked.  I don't believe we should run out Beilein, but I don't know how long he will want to coach.  If Stevens is abailable, he would be a homerun hire.

I can't view it either. The screen is just all blue no matter what I do. I've tried logging in and out and using a different browser. I tried clicking on the OP's name to get there that way and his profile shows up the same way, all blue and doesn't load. No luck, but it displays on the mobile HD app.

The OP got blasted since he linked a three month old article about a coach that seems to have no business leaving a very successful NBA career.
