Gus Malzahn Has The Only Appropriate Response To M's Spring Florida Visit

Submitted by RyGuy on

I hadn't seen this on the board, yet, and I appreciated it-

When asked about Michigan's spring practice trip to Florida, Gus Malzahn responded with the most apropos response I've heard so far:

"Yeah, whatever."

If only, he meant what he said.  I suspect the truth translator for his comment would be "As if my job isn't fucking hard enough, I now have to deal with this crazy bastard with great coaches falling out of his pockets coming into my backyard and making me look like an amateur."

I think that whole thing kind of got blown out of proportion, to be honest with you. The chances of a team up North coming into our state and [getting] a player that us or Alabama wants are slim to none. So it was just a matter of that was the big story. - Malzahn in a previous interview RE: Michigan / Big Ten camps

I mean, give it time, Gus. We will want to remember this quote fondly in retrospect perhaps a few years from now as the collective arrogance of your conference may start taking the odd hit here and there, all goes well.

it will change quicker than we - and far more importantly- much quicker than Gus anticipates because  his "expressed attitude" toward what Harbaugh has set in motion is completely at odds with what any right thinking person would conclude as an inevitability. Hell, if they actually believed what Gus is saying, we would not be familiar with the name Sankey.

It will only take one, but based on what i saw last season, there will be a number of these three stars pulled out of that area that will perform at a level more indicative of the expectations attached to those of 4 and 5 star recruits. With the internet being a 365/24/7 operation and espn operating likewise, the high schoolers from that area will repeatedly read of and view the exploits of these athletes, many of whom they already know, but even without a personal association the shared geographical bond will spike their interest to a level Gus is portraying as being almost impossible. Michigan will be viewed as much more than a viable option, and instead will be listed among the top 5 schools of interest before many of them receive their first piece of correspondence from a college coaching staff.

The late, great Bo Schembecler set it in motion, years ago, and we now have a coach with complete awareness of the "Privilege of Michigan," as Bo liked to refer to it. Tex Schramm, longtime GM of the Cowboys made the following observation as to Michigan: "Damn, these Michigan players must receive the greatest coaching in the world. The disparity between their measureables at the combines compared to others coming from programs that possibly only  the GMs of NFL teams are familiar with is so great the only logical conclusion for Michigan being so successful can only be attributed to coaching." We obviously are aware he was speaking directly to skill positions because there weren't many, quite possibly none, that a Michigan OLman(more if they graduated together), sprinkled in with some dbs now and then that weren't drafted in any given year during the entire Schembechler era.

Mo addressed this immediately upon being named HC and began pursuing and landing QBs and WRs ranked as high as the OLmen they took annually. We all know what followed.

In 2016, we not only have a former NFL player, by way of Michigan, but also a Super Bowl head coach running the program, as least equal to, and possibly better than Bo at not only understanding the possible number of staff members per NCAA rules, but actually making sure every available position was occupied by a highly qualified applicant. The news of Kill as a likely future hire is proof of that. The fact that many of these staff members come from some of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the nation is no accident. I am certainly not ashamed of our head coach, quite possibly being more knowledgeable than any other, of the allowances provided by the rules, but also the fact these hires, that opposing coaches claim "are of  a questionable nature." Jim is not going to hire anyone without a complete understanding of their ceiling as to coaching, so when he hires a parent or former coach of a new wolverine, he does so with a vetting system that, to some extent, consists of certain "must have demonstrated" criteria. Among them obviously are demonstrated skills as a high school coach. It's not a coincidence that state championships at the high school level are a combination of good to great coaching, but no matter how good you are as a coach, without superior talent, you are only going so far. I have no idea why opposing coach even use the word "questionable." If you are able to replace - and there would be no need to without demonstrated on the field success- vacancies that occur annually simply because the members of the staff you lose are hired by other programs hoping to duplicate your success, to hire anyone without a proven record as a player, coach - usually a combination of both- coming from an extremely fertile recruiting area, thereby  the question of "was it done against top level opposition," becomes absolutely moot. Does Thomas Wilcher produce top level dbs?

You get the point. It also allows the head coach to groom a staff, answered so nicely by Chris Partridge, when questioned about his future as a college coach to reply, "My future is what Jim Harbaubh determines it to be," as to the question of continuity of staff. Hell, as much as he's designing a program that will be a power for years to come, by hiring already proven, at very high levels, fairly young but extremely bright, and absolutely accomplished coaches, he is accumulating staff members that will be with him for years based on perhaps the most significant criteria; loyalty - no one is more loyal than to the person that provided them the key to the entrance door in a very competitive and highly sought after profession. His, Harbaugh's success, carries with it the understanding you will lose staff members that have already proven their abilities. They are, understandably, in demand. Who better to replace them with than those that give him an edge in recruiting, and based on what many others only give lip service to, an undeniable opportunity to rise to your level of competency? Damn, these are the things we all look for in employers when looking for our next job. These coaches will be him until he cannot provide them with a job many colleges will offer based, as stated above, simply on  the hope the magic wears off. This, my friends, is how you build a loyal staff. His moves, imo, have been brilliant in this regard.

And we must never forget what Bo used and Jim most certainly does, that inherent advantage that can only be matched by Stanford(if they continue their emphasis on football), and to a lesser degree, ND. The best example of "The Privilege of Michigan," that immediately comes to mind is probably the recruitment of now Dr. Stefan Humpries, High School AA  from Florida, and until his announcement, a guaranteed Notre Dame commit. Then when he shocked the then "recruiting gurus," by announcing his commitment to Michigan, these gurus wanted answers. And Bo, never hesitant to promote what he felt was the greatest combination of academics and athletics, but only when prompted, provided them with enough answers in a short story that completely satisfied their curiosity.

I ask for forgiveness from my Catholic friends on site for not knowing her title, but who I will refer to as the Superintendent of the school Humpries was attending in Florida, let Bo know her feelings at the very moment he entered the school. "Bo," she stated upon his entrance, "I want you to know right now I am not comfortable with you coming down here and enticing these young men who should be going to ND into going to Michigan." Being Catholic and always respectul, he answered, "Sister, I want you to know right now I probably have more Catholic boys on my team than ND has. But when a young man comes along that could gain acceptance to Michigan, without football playing any role whatsoever, and because it's such a rare occurence, I believe it's my duty as an educator to make him aware of what he can accomplish with a Michigan degree. You don't understand, Sister, this young man possesses qualities so rare that if he is not made aware that Michigan is able to provide him with the best possible chance of achieving his dreams by pursuing a course of study that ND doesn't even offer, and if I am the person, and it seems to be the case, to make him aware of this, am unable to do so then you and I will both live with the knowledge we possibly prevented him from realizing his dream. I am not comfortable with that thought. Are you?"

Well a couple nighst later, when he made his announcement in front of a fully packed gym (today's equivalent of the table and five baseball caps)  that he would be attending the University of Michigan, the announcement that shocked the gurus of that time, it was apparent his message got across.  Before Bo left, the sister asked, "Bo, I will be receiving season tickets, right?" Yeah, I'm guessing, based on the words of the mother of the latest No.1 ranked h.s. player, Jim's leans on this a bit.

Now combine the above with every high school player in America knowing who he is, what he's done and, gratis of the SEC, has gained a measure of publicity surpassing even that of a 4 time NC coach.  These same players(those from Florida) already know what became of Denard Robinson when he took on the challenge of the snow. But these SEC players of every state are also aware the current team possesses Jabrill Peppers, number 2 ranked player to Fournette in 2014, they know that one of the best players, together with his father(a damn fine NFL player, btw,) will now reside in Ann Arbor. They know where there was none, in one year's time he took the same group and produced four All-Americans in his first year. I am prettry sure they saw, some probably in the stands, what this (considered to be the Big X's third best team) did to the nation's number three defense last season.  And let's now forget these players meet annually during the summer in organized 7 on 7 tournaments and they talk and they IM and they tweet, yada, yada, yada, so they know Brandon Peters, they know Christian's little brother, who just happens to be the best h.s. qb in his class commited to Michigan, and oh yeah...................they know who Rashaun Gary is and where he will be playing his college ball.

So yeah, Gus, Michigan is going to take some of those players, and for some reason I believe it's your hope talking, because no one can be that conference blind to not realize the above is all true and what it portends. Like i said, the only question is when. Shit, the way things have been rolling up there in Ann Arbor territory, I wouldn't be surprised if my visit to this site as early as tomorrow features a story about one of Alabama's finest declaring his dream offer of Michigan. Yeah, whatever. Be scared Gus, Be very fucking scared.
