And its why I don't have a ton of hope for him.  If he hasn't solved the "don't rocket the ball at the guy standing 5 yards away problem by now, its doubtful he'll get it straightened out in time to be the starter.  And I'm not even sure that's a coaching issue, because I guarantee he's been hearing that for years.  I feel bad for guys like that.  Lots of potential, and they just don't put it together.

In the H4: pt. 2 post Seth discussed a former #1 overall draft pick QB who floundered and fumbled his way through a thoroughly mediocre pro career until JH arrived to turn it around. Untimely injuries, constant turnover in the OC position, all nearly the exact same circumstances Shane has experienced, going back to HS.

I'll give him at least Spring practice to get a feel for the Harbaugh Way before I write him off. My impression of Shane since HS has been loves the limelight, the twitters & instagrams, envisions himself the Justin Timberlake QB. We'll see if adapting to an intense teacher/competitor will click with him.

One difference in JH embracing and investing in Alex Smith and our QB situation now: There was literally no other option on the 49ers, with the lockout looming. Harbaugh has as many options as he feels like committing schollies to here...

but having lived down the street from De La Salle when Shane went there, I'd say he is a kid who's used to having a certain amount of success.

The reason I don't think Shane will start (even if he is/was the QB with the most innate talent or upside) is for one reason:

He isn't a young Jimmy Harbaugh.
and thats exactly what Harbaugh is looking for, his younger clone (in personality).

Obviously Shane wouldn't be where he is if he wasn't competitive, but we've all heard the Harbaugh stories, and anyone who watched that QB coaching clinic should know is that Jim Harbaugh values a competitiveness unknown to mankind more than anything.

I think whomever shows Harbaugh thatat trait the most will be chosen to "coach up" regardless of experience & talent level.

It happens every coaching change.  The new regime is great, the old one was lame.

Harbaugh will leave eventually, and when he does, whether he won a lot or not, you will hear how impressive the new regime is versus the old.

We are just believing what we want to believe.

from Carr to Rich Rod and Hoke to Harbaugh in terms of practice tempo and open competition (remember Denard beating out Tate when everybody freaked out about it during the summer?)

3G hints at this a little but I think Harbaugh is coaching Shane tough to wipe away any sense of entitlement he might have being the most senior on the team.
I do believe the best player will win the job ultimately but I don't buy into the significance of one QB outplaying the other based on less than a week of practice.

I also heard the coaches including Harbaugh mention that the team was in great shape numerous times, including in the presser and in the interview with Ed.

I think some of this is simply to create news.

I want to hear the status of that group because I think it is just as indicative, if not more than QB play, with how this season progresses. A great O-Line makes an average running back into an all-american and quarterback into Rose Bowl MVP. Go Blue!

I keep stressing. If we have little to no improvement on the OL than we won't be much different then last year. The OL can turn average HBs & QBs into scrubs or All-Americans. Not to knock Toby Gerhart but, c'mon, the dude almost won the Heisman behind a Stanford/Harbaugh OL as a HB - a huge, slow HB lol. Give him our line the last few years & he'd have been a nobody that year.

I also remember when Jason Whitlock said this about Wellman:

Hoke doesn’t rebuild programs by himself. He has the best strength coach in college football, Aaron Wellman. Over the course of five years, Wellman took two fat offensive tackles (Robert Brewster and Andre Ramsey), an undersized center (Dan Gerberry) and a razor-thin tight end (Darius Hill) and sculpted them into all-conference players and NFL prospects. Brewster, Ramsey, Gerberry and Hill formed the foundation of Ball State’s 2008 team and then landed on NFL rosters in 2009. That’s incredible for a Mid-American Conference team.

We had Barwis before him, who was considered by many to be the best in the country. IMO, all this stuff about strength and conditioning is way overblown.

And we don't know what the guys were doing in December when we didn't have a coaching staff. I assume they were still working out with Wellman but I'd bet attendance was spottier.

I especially like the part about how practices are faster as they have a second team ready to go....hmmm - where have I heard that before? I know..last year. Here is a quote from an Mlive article last spring about how Nussmeier was increasing the tempo to get more reps at practice.... >>>> "Practices are really fast, we get a lot of reps," Gardner said. "This was probably the fastest practice I've ever been a part of." There's been plenty of talk about the overall pace Nussmeier -- Michigan's first-year offensive coordinator -- works with in practice, and the overall level of tempo he chooses to play with during games. Practices are quick. When a play ends, the next group -- according to players -- is expected to be out of the huddle and ready to snap the ball for the next rep. That concept is a simple one: It creates more reps, and for a young team, the more reps the better.

Unfortunately a lot of us at MgoBlog are getting used to coaching changes and our BS detectors for lazy reporting is pretty dialed in.

Sad, this is the fourth coach since I started reading Brian's wonderfull folly.

Thank god for HARBAUGH.

Thanks for appeasing the addiction for another day. It's gonna be hard to make any definitive observations about the team until the spring game. Everything else is just noise.

Honestly not too surprised about Morris. I've never been that impressed him to begin with though. I love hearing about the uptempo practices and the of the WRs. Hopefully it still rings true come fall.

He starts the competition as the kid with the most physical talents. That a good place to start from. I would expect that JH and company will give him a real chance to succeed. Talent always gets an extra look. Game on.

The bullet about Harbaugh being disappointed with the conditioning is disconcerting but not surprising. Seemed like every week for the last two years, we watched the team get outmuscled in every phase of the game. That will not be tolerated under Harbaugh, and he's going to work his team just like how Bo worked his: like dogs. Although I hope it doesn't happen, I wouldn't be surprised to see some guys leave the program because they can't handle Harbaugh's expectations.

And as far as Morris is concerned, that isn't all that surprising, either. He's done very little to impress in the time he's been given. Luckily, he's got a clean slate and a long way to go until September, so anything can happen between now and then. He's got arguably the best QB coach in the business watching over him. If Harbaugh can't help him, then no one can.

What's he going to say? That they're fat and out of shape? Yeah great start to the tenure. First practice and you're already creating a media drama. He's going to tell them exactly what they want to hear like every coach so that there's no distractions in the locker room. They know what they need to do and they'll get it done by August.

You said you wanted to find out what their intent was in winter conditioning. Were you pleased with some of the results?

“Yes. Team’s in very good shape. Kevin Tolbert and his staff did a very nice job and the fellas did a nice job. You could see that throughout practice that the team’s in good condition and that gives us a fighting chance.”

The comment on conditioning was a compliment of the former staff. Harbaugh wanted to not bring up any controversy about what he found in his first practice. Anyone with half a brain knows that Tolbert can't have had any impact on conditioning prior to Harbaugh himself. Harbaugh was not talking about Tolbert.

These reports are either from a. A player b. A coach or c. Made up. A is hard to take serious and B isnt realistic and C. i dont think is the case. So if its coming from a player i would take it with a very large grain of salt. Interesting stuff but not worth buying into and taking to seriously

Seems like Henson has a scout.com subscription. Most of this stuff was reported before this, and if you even attempt to call yourself a Michigan you'd have been a fool to take Shane Morris against the field in the QB battle, especially after we found out Ruddock transfer is likely. Having one week of practice and then a week off sure has been a tease though, can't fault anyone for keeping the football convo going. At least Harbaugh is out there staying active and saving lives during the week off.

First off, they have only practiced for a week, so I take everything with a grain of salt.  Some kids will take some time to adjust to a new coach/style in order to show their true stuff, and there's still plenty of time to adjust.  Second, I really think Harbaugh will make a big immediate difference at UM.  We shall see how that turns out in terms of W/L, but I think we will notice a big on-field difference...like back to soundly beating opponents in the bottom half of the conference, playing hard and fast, being more aggressive in all facets of the game, not making dumb plays/penalities, better clock management, etc....just looking like a better team.  I know that's a bit of the honeymoon phase talking, but I really think the attitude, charisma, pace, expectations, etc. that Harbaugh and his staff bring will make a world of difference.  Lastly, I'm not overly concerned about Morris not doing so hot.  I think we have a pretty big pool of guys with some talent.  Maybe Morris will eventually emerge and this is just motivation talk, maybe it will be Speight or Malzone.  Either way, I'm fairly confident that Harbaugh will create at least an adaquate QB, which should be enough to show a vast improvement from last year, even if none of them are on the level of the traditional pre-Hoke QBs yet.

Agree. Harbaugh will be a tougher coach. The team will be tougher under Coach Harbaugh. I am a little suprised by some people here immediately dismissing the notes about practices under Harbaugh being more intense and faster, as if it doesn't matter or not true.

Glad to hear about Drake Harris having a nice spring.   That kid is a real talent.    Great hands, and he moves effortlessly.   Here's hoping he is finally healthy and starts getting in to the end zone for the Wolverines.

Everybody practiced hard, had great practice weeks during Hokes era too and we all know how that went. At this point i want to see results on the field, and I am sure JH will get the team to compete again..until then I will take the "great" practice week withba grain of salt.

Hoke faster than Rich Rod...Nussmeier was super duper fast and Saban never used it in games, so they bumped heads...now Harbaugh is SUPER DE DUPER FAST!!!

lol, same shit different day.

A comment on how Harbaugh or Durkin is "simplifying things and allowing (us) to play" in 3...2...1...
