Did we really need a new offensive scheme?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on September 23rd, 2019 at 1:06 PM

Or did we just need a better playcaller like a Jeff Fischer?

We have linemen that are built for a pro style approach. We have TEs and FBs galore. Wisconsin has no problem winning with their offense.

We had an old Mustang that needed repairs and we traded it for a new Honda Civic.

Probably not.  The irony is we junked the offense we'd spent four years building for based on a game where we scored 39 points.

But the defense allowed 62 so therefore time for a shiny new offense capable of scoring 63 i would guess.

Bet you anything Harbaugh regrets the entire "speed in space" experiment right now about as much as the Browns HC Freddie Kitchens regrets calling a fucking draw play on a 4th and 9 late in the game last night

I thought it was junked on the fact that guys like DPJ and Nico Collins weren't getting the ball enough. Or that it took way too long for Michigan to drive the field when they needed a score.

And hey some things changed. Instead of handing the ball to Karan Higdon and throwing to Zach Gentry, Michigan now exclusively throws to Ronnie Bell (this is not a shot at Ronnie Bell, he just shouldn't be the most targeted player on the team). Michigan's team plays just as slowly as ever, just from the shotgun. A downtempo spread if you will.

As another poster just pointed out, Michigan has been 1-8 in games in which the opponent scored 30+ points.  The team has leaned heavily on the defense to dominate games. Our offense either needed a better scheme, better players or both.

It's both. Without a Stanford or Wisconsin-level OL, the manball scheme doesn't work well. There's at least some leeway with a power spread, if you have the skill players to cover it up. Michigan's OL hasn't been great, but I also don't think they've been THAT bad, at least when compared to the truly bad OLs of Michigan past (i.e. under Hoke and RR)

Unfortunately, I think Shea is one of the primary problems this year. Where tf has he gone? He's become nothing but the embodiment of his worst qualities as a QB. He panics behind perfectly normal pockets, cannot find the frequent wide-open receivers (especially alarming when it's Nico or Tarik, your top two targets!), his throws have not been accurate at all, often the ball sails on him - last year he had some deep ball accuracy. And he isn't running or making the right reads. Generally playing very unconfident right now. This was supposedly a system more compatible with his skillset! Honestly, what redeeming qualities does he have at this point? DCaf wasn't exactly much better when he was in, but at least he had a calm and composed demeanor, and seemed to be leading the offense and finding mild success running the ball (before getting bludgeoned to death). Shea reminds me of a broken Gardner, except Gardner's OL was a thousand times worse.

Go check their record against OSU, PSU, and MSU over the last decade. How many titles do you think they'd have in the East?

Edit: looked it up myself. Since the B1G split into divisions, Wisconsin is 4-13 against OSU, PSU, and MSU. If you include Michigan, they're still only 7-15.

In 2011 OSU's head coach was Luke Fickell. And Penn State was still recovering from the whole Paterno scandal. So the one time they did it happened to be the same time OSU had its worst season in like 2+ decades. OSU hasn't had a season like that since, and honestly may not for a very long time.

I think we did need a new offensive scheme. I think the failure against Wisconsin is a combination of Gattis/Harbs, awful O-Line, and Charbonnet being out.

Our offense has been holding us back and failing to live up to its talent for 4 years now. Hopefully Gattis / Harbaugh can pull it together before ND / MSU...

I agree with the idea that maybe this was a drastic approach. I wish the coaching staff was cognizant enough to spread the ball to our talented wideouts but also pound the ball up the middle if we need to. The interior run game was strong last year, and has been in the past and I don't care if it is boring - the point is to win the game. But I also understand the need to be able to go spread as needed.

Still, if we were elite at power football, we could still beat teams like OSU or other ranked teams. It doesn't have to be spread or nothing. Overall, the concepts, coaching and execution need to work together and they don't.

We needed to keep to keep Jedd Fisch and the Jedd Fisch offense.  Go back at watch some highlights from 2015/2016.  Fullback traps, followed by zone read, followed by double fake screen pass to Hill up the middle, followed by end around.  It was glorious!  Picking Tim Drevno over Jedd Fisch is the biggest mistake Harbaugh has made since he's been here.

The best offense under Harbaugh definitely has aligned with Jedd's time here, and it definitely has been different in his absence.

Yet he never seems to rise above or fall below his current station in coaching.

I have no answers for this.

We didn't need to junk it and start over. We could have added a hurry up and fix the passing game with better routes and that probably would have been perfect.

That doesn't mean junking it and starting with something new had to equal disaster. This could have gone much better. It didn't.

We did not have the coaches already in house to fix it last year. Right now it does not look like we have coaches in house to fix it.

Ask me again in a month.

I wonder why this is a question?  Because of the loss?  Michigan was playing 80's style offense for the last couple of years and yes you can dominate lesser teams, but they fell short on teams with the same or more talent.  Something had to be changed and Harbaugh saw that and changed it.

I just wish that the football gods would side with Michigan again before I die.  It isn't too much to ask for.

We have needed a great QB since Harbaugh has been here.  His best one has been Rudock (or pre Iowa Speight?).  Everyone, including me, thought Patterson was finally the answer.  I don't think he is.  No matter what offense you run, without a dynamic QB, it's gonna be a struggle.

Yes, the quarterback is the most important position.  You have to get that right to win big and we haven't.  The question is where do we go from here?  Since DM is injured, can Shea be developed?

I was hoping Ben McDaniels, our QB coach, would be a positive influence in this regard.  He has experience coaching with his brother, Josh, who is the OC for Tom Brady in New England.

Do we even have a new scheme?  This is the least new looking new scheme that I have ever seen.  The only thing that we added to the offense this year are fumbles.

We've got a quarterback who's locked into one of our more pedestrian passing options and won't drop back for more than two seconds. Our offensive line is unable to impose themselves against anyone who matters. For all of our recruiting stars and "future NFL players," there's a distinct lack of big play making ability. Hardly anyone is winning individual battles out there. Where we stand still before the snap is not among our biggest problems. This collection of players is not good enough to play at the level this fan base wants.

How about ‘can’t drop back for more than two seconds because of lack of protection on lots of downs?’

The O-line play is very poor, and that’s the problem not only with the QBs, but with the running game. 40 yards running, combined with QBs getting thrown around like rag dolls tells me an awful lot about O-line play.

On reflection, I’d have to say it may have needed at least tweaking, because it wasn’t an explosive offense against the best teams. It was difficult to win if they fell behind.

One glaring problem that’s getting overlooked here is that for the last 5 games the defense hasn’t been stopping anyone with a pulse. Teams are moving right down the field and they don’t need an OSU type offense to do it.

Saturday was a complete collapse, offensively and defensively. Very disheartening, and the poor level of play has the team dispirited, too.

I’d say right now the team and the coaches don’t know whether to shit or go blind.

Yeah, I love the 180 most people have pulled here...  We had this much posting BS last year because the offense stunk it up versus OSU and UF.  Everybody - EVERYBODY - wanted a better passing game that used the weapons it had all over the field.  Nobody was calling for a fancy new spread, per se, but we all wanted Pep (the passing game coord) gone because the passing game sucked ass.

Gattis is here to implement a power spread similar to what PSU and Alabama run.  It hasn't worked out, yet.  And I'm not sure if it will because it clearly has Harbaugh's fingerprints all over it (no slot rcvr's, multiple TE's, Mason out of nowhere).  It needs to be turned over to Warinner and Gattis (run/pass) - they are the ones with the experience running a successful power spread.

Personally, I don't think we needed a spread.  But we ALL agree that last years passing game was broken in every aspect.  Unfortunately, we're still seeing those same problems.

A spread/speed option (RPO) isn't necessary to utilize talent at WR; I don't know why people automatically think this. Yes it's a great way to showcase some of that speed and talent but it's not necessary to be a great O. I hate all of this "scheme" talk because that's just a facade to overlook the glaring problems in the coaching of basics, routes, etc.

Take a look at some of the footage and you'll see WRs run their route then just stand there at the end of the route... WTF?! Get your happy-arse open after your route

Jedd Fisch was awesome and we won that game against OSU without the first down that the refs donated to OSU.  That style of offense was pretty freaking cool, IMO and I wish we had it back.  Even the offense we ran last year was better than this garbage and I'd be happy with either. I never liked the Gattis hire and the transition to being a pure spread team.
