Yes, I think that the story is leavened with a bit of such logic. And that a lot of the bells and whistles get magnified to help Jim save face.

And I assume that announcements about new coaches accompany the story so that press attention is focused on program developments, too. I hope that's the case, because--honestly--the wait has sometimes made it seem that Jim held too many of the cards.

Now the question for fans is: Can you accept that we never beat OSU? Because that's just not something that Jim can pull from a hat.

No.  I cannot accept that we will never beat OSU again.  If that's the agreement, he needs to be fired - not extended.  And yes, I agree that is the agreement with an extension.  Warde proves he isn't up to the job if this crap is signed.

And it's not just losing to OSU.  The team has looked in inconsistent poo for 4 years.

What this tells me is the reaction to his availability for NFL jobs was met with the thunderous yawn it deserved.  We’re stuck with him at least for one more year because the buyout was preposterously high and paying it simply won’t fly at Michigan this year.  For better or worse this isn’t Auburn or Texas(and given they hired, respectively, Boise St. dude and Steve Sarkisian that’s probably a good thing).

This might work out, but I doubt it.  In any case let’s not pretend this is the best case scenario for either Harbaugh or Manuel.

How about it goes up to $6 mill to beat OSU/win BIG10 title and goes up to $8 mill if he wins a national championship? Seems fair. This would be a good contract for us (and maybe for Harbaugh to light  fire under his ass). Those that are opposed to the lowered salary just don't want him as the coach, which is fine, but it's clear people are just trying to draft an argument against it because they just don't want him here anymore.

What other choice did he have?  He has been shopping NFL jobs with, at minimum, the intent to gain leverage.  There obviously wasn't much interest.

Recruiting has already suffered enough.  Hopefully he signs the damn thing and starts to hire some people so he doesn't get lapped by O$U and PSU in recruiting.

Amazing how people will take a clearly written tweet that says X and then post that the tweet said Y.

The tweet does not even come close to saying 'deal is done.'

It says 'expected to sign,' (same thing several other sources have said over the last week).

Only new info is the base and incentive amounts.

My question:  How much is the incentive bonus for competent clock management at the end of the half?

Source tells The Athletic Michigan and Jim Harbaugh are close to finalizing a five-year deal

The deal is not done. Your clickbait title is not appreciated.

Chengelis says that that the deal hasn’t been signed or finalized yet, though it may happen “in the next few days.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if they waited until Monday to announce it so the title game overshadows it.

Nothing more indicative of the complete lack of program progress than going from 2014: OSU wins national title, Jim Harbaugh signs with Michigan, to 2021: OSU wins national title, Harbaugh's new contract value is cut in half

Waving the white flag on being competitive. The ad only cares about kids graduating and nobody getting arrested. Home losses to MSU and 3-4 blowout losses a year are considered acceptable now apparently

.... and how does this seem somehow the right move? We’re paying him half his salary with a minimum buyout. And expectations are as low as they’ve ever been.

So... the college saves money to put a lesser product on the field. Michigan sometimes is so painfully practical.

Who said it’s the right move?

They gave him an out, a chance to part on “good” terms. whether he tried or not, he couldn’t get an NFL job and now has no choice but to accept it. I’m sure if he signs he’ll spin it as “I didn’t get it done and need to do better and I’m betting on myself to do better”

and Michigan capitulates to a coach who has already peaked at UM and clearly would have left if he could save face and fall upwards

At this rate Ryan Day to Jax and Matt Campbell will be the next OSU coach to go 5-0 against us

Old news and Harbaugh has not signed anything yet. Michigan football is a mixture of the Young and the Restless, Barnum and Bailey, and the BOZO show.

While I am in no way happy or inspired by Harbaugh probably returning, at least they appear to finally have this situation sorted out. Now please get to work on signing a DC and some new position coaches who can maximize our current talent and bring in even more top-flight talent.
