Could/should Flores law suit stop Vikings from hiring Harbaugh?

Title says it all.

Even if it does, do we really want a coach that has been this forward about leaving Michigan? Think about the negative recruiting. Even his mentor Bo would've fired him for this prolonged dalliance w/ the NFL

I have several employees for who I am their direct supervisor. I have no issue with them talking to or interviewing with other companies. I want them to be successful, and I want them to feel like part of a team and not owned. If one of them leaves, I have an exit plan for each of them. If the company or I am doing something that makes them feel as if they need to find success elsewhere, there's a problem. I would rather know about the issue than get a resignation letter.

If I was Warde the day I found out he was interviewing I would’ve pulled his extension offer. Then told him if he doesn’t land the job when he gets back we would have a long conversation about his commitment. If I’m not happy with his answers I might just ask for his resignation. If I’m AD I would be sick of him always eyeing the NFL. Either commit to being our coach for the rest of your contract or leave

This assumes he has looked around previously (outside of last year which seemed to be welcomed by Warde).  We have no evidence that was the case.  This is particularly true given that he is required to inform the AD if he decides to interview for an NFL job.  That is something we would have heard about seeing as how quickly we heard about the Minnesota interview.

Where is the logic in this?  Last year, Harbaugh was basically forced to renegotiate his contract, but this year he should stand by it?  It's a two way street and that became abundantly clear as a result of the renegotiation.

On top of that, how many coaches jumped ship recently?  Similarly, how many opportunities for top pro positions become available each year?  I just don't understand the indignance when it's par for the course throughout pro and college sports right now.

How was he supposed to make the "dalliance" any shorter" once he decided he was interested? He doesn't control the NFL's timeline. If he'd had an earlier offer, he would have taken it and that would have been that. In what way was it "prolonged"? By whom?

I'm glad he's leaving, but at the same time, its kind of pathetic...

He finally got the assistant coaches he needed to succeed.

He finally got his Superstar QB & RB & WR in the wings...

Is he really leaving because we won't play in the portal or throw bags of money at kids?

I think he's still butt hurt about the pay cut and it's obvious he and Warde don't like each other.

Oh well...

Very weird dude as we all know, but, let's be honest,  Michigan is NOT an easy job for several reasons.

What's to blame exactly?  He proved he was worth the money but says he doesn't care about the money.  This team is his oyster essentially.  He finally got all the staff lined up to be successful, recruits are starting to buy in, and now he decides he doesn't want to be here.  Contract on the table, ready to sign, but all we hear are crickets and NFL rumors

Yes, No, maybe?

Regardless we have crossed the rubicon on Harbaugh. He can’t just come back to the status quo.

Recruits will know he wanted out and anything short of a top-of-mountain full throated commitment with the matching 10 year contract is gonna make recruiting difficult going forward.

Not even that contract would stop the negative recruiting.  All contracts can be broken, and all that would need to happen to get rumors going is one wrong word or an eye twitch.  Face it - Harbaugh is now forever tainted as the UM coach.  There is no way he'll ever be whole-heartedly welcomed back by UM fans as the Head Football Coach.  He'll be welcomed back warmly for events and reunions.  But his time as a wanted coach in Ann Arbor is over.

Hopefully this lawsuit won’t matter and both parties can go their separate ways. Telling your prized recruit’s dad in this class that he would take an NFL job if offered, I’d say yeah, UM is better off running out JG/MH as the coach and Elston as DC.

Not saying it’s right or wrong what he’s doing. What I’m saying is if he is open about accepting an HC’ing position to a future recruit, I think tells you he has had one foot out the door. So, relying on a lawsuit to keep him at UM, I don’t understand. Why keep JH (hypothetically) when he clearly wants to try something else out?

Completely agree that we’ve crossed the rubicon.  I said it a couple days ago when this job became the target and it was no longer about him getting a “ unique” opportunity.

Just posed the question because of litigious society and if this might put pressure on the still remaining vacancies.

No. Why would it?  If Jim Harbaugh is the most qualified candidate, then he should be hired. Not sure why Flores’ allegations - and they are just that at this point, allegations - should have any impact upon the Vikings hiring a coach who has one of the top resumes out there (available candidates).

No I don't think it would or should. Flores I think he has a legitimate case against the Dolphins for malpractice if he can prove the allegations. From what I've read, it's difficult for me to see how his interview process with the Broncos or Giants is connected to racial discrimination.

I am not suggesting there is not blatant examples of racism in the NFL, there definitely is and it should be addressed (look up the pre-draft interviews Dez Bryant was subjected to). But John Elway showing up hungover to an interview, and Belichick texting the wrong ex-assistant doesn't suggest to me that Flores was obviously the most qualified candidate, but wasn't hired because he wasn't white.

You are correct, and I should amend my comment above re: The Giants interview. The timeline laid out by Flores suggests The Giants already had decided on hiring Daboll before they brought Flores in as a formality to meet Rooney Rule requirements; which is an egregious exploitation of the rule itself.

Under that context Flores has every right to file charges.

My question has always been, why can't a team 'fall in love' with a candidate after an interview? Is there some sort of moral obligation for a team to say, 'Hey, this is the guy we want' even though they haven't finished interviewing everyone?

Just looking at the Lions, Jim Schwartz, Matt Patricia and Darrell Bevell those are three former Lions head coaches (throw an interm tag on Bevell) who all have Super Bowl rings (obviously not from Detroit) who for their careers have been successful Coordinators but really have not been given another head coaching opportunity. (Maybe Bevell with taking over the Jags but in both of his stints as head coach, Bevell only got the job because the head coach was kicked to the curb mid-season and in both cases the teams moved on from him.)

Is there a racial bias in selecting NFL head coaches? I think you can make that argument but I don't feel that Flores is the poster child of that argument. I think we are seeing more and more talented coaches of all color entering the ranks. Not every good or excellent Coordinator makes a good head coach but as more and more coaches of color move up through the coaching ranks, we are going to see more successful head coaches of color and those coaches getting more than one chance to prove it.

You shouldn't be getting negged for this. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence from fields in cognitive science about how this manifests, empirical statistics based on hiring/interviews, peer-reviewed field studies where researchers test the impact of race on call backs and hiring, and that's before you even start to factor in the history of intentional race-based discrimination in hiring/housing. Studies show the amygdala activates when people view darker pigmentation and that this can occur before the person is even aware that they saw a person.
