He’s a hardcore Charlie String disciple, and I doubt Strong is around for long in Jax, so this is a good move probably.

I don’t recall LBs being noticeably better this year, though I was usually blacked out by the end of the first offensive possession. In addition, I don’t recall him being a big time recruiter, though I’m probably wrong.

Gotta respect that other football teams try and poach our coaches, just wish the on field success would start matching up. Hate to potentially lose him but I’d say Harbaugh needs to go and get another young coach and recruiter to replace him.

Urban will coach a couple years in the NFL and will decide like Saban that college is ultimately what he likes. He will take over Notre Dame or be back at OSU

The Lbers were horrible this past season!  McGrone and Ross were abject disasters at lber!  Watched them both get out of their gaps with no blockers only to see the rb cut through their gap for huge gains.  All game long vs msu, wisconsin, indiana and penn st.  The lbers were as bad if not worse than the db's!

Agree, and I wasn't a fan of bringing BJM back.

Nonetheless, a part of me thinks there might have been some (read: a lot of) hero ball going on with last years defense.  Very clearly there was a disconnect between the coaches and the on-field play (on both sides, actually).  I'm wondering of they players tuned out Brown and staff and started trying to help the weak interior DL by reacting too quickly to anything that looked like it was going to a DT?  Hutch, Paye, McGrone, and Ross are all talented players, and when they were out of position it was normally because they went (or stayed) inside for some reason.  Was that their coaching, or was it hero ball?  Not that it matters - it was (probably) wrong in either case.

Given the purging of the staff, I'm leaning towards a cancerous attitude between players and coaches (obvious things are obvious, right?).

Yes the LBs were horrible.. but why would Urban try to poach him, if hes only a top recruiter?  That won't help in the NFL.  And why interview now unless he doesn't want to work for JH after being here one year.  Odd on many fronts.  And yes, he is a very good recruiter.

Could be several reasons. 1) Charlie Strong thinks very highly of him and wants to at least interview him. 2) Meyer has no intention of hiring him but could hold off on naming the coach until a week or so just to hurt with NSD and the transfer portal. As long as he’s being diligent with the other interviews it’s not gonna hurt him any to do this. 3) Maybe he’s actually a good up and coming coach that wasn’t the issue at linebacker, maybe it was Brown? I honestly think there is some parts of all of these going into this decision.

I agree 100% with the cancerous attitude comment. There was something terribly wrong at Michigan this past season and the pandemic is not an excuse especially since Harbaugh and Michigan was the primary voice pushing to play. The players looked like they did not want to be there in many cases and that is a MASSIVE issue with any program. I have always wondered if Don brown was given too much power through Harbaugh and his stubborn ways finally pushed everyone away? Giving anyone the keys without holding them responsible is not a good idea and Michigan has found this out with Harbaugh

Agree.  Something was way off last year.  I have never seen a set of defensive players with so much staring off into space during fourth quarters as the team last year. I enjoy watching focus and concentration and look for it.  It seemed to evaporate like no other time or for no other team.

Im not sure Urban filling out his coaching roster with almost universally college coaches is going to go over well with a professional team.  A big part of coaching is getting buy in, no matter how good of a coach you are.  Look at Beilein in Cleveland. Great coach- no buy in=trouble. Selling pros on what could be seen as a bunch of "Rah-Rah" college guys may not be best path to take.

Good luck to him as he's probably gone.  I'm sure we will miss things about him as a coach/recruiter.  I'm also sure there are opportunities to upgrade in some areas.  No worries :)

Is this the first to hit the lifeboats being lowered form the Titanic? Time will tell for us Michigan fans. Harbaugh is rolling the dice to keep his job after next year. I want him to succeed for Michigan's sake not just his. I grew up with Bo, Mo, and Loyd, and it is sickening to see what continues to happen with the football program. Michigan was always tough as hell against the competition during those years. The problem is that it never seemed to adapt as football changed and never left the Big 10 Rose Bowl mentality. I hope this coaching overhaul changes this

Brian Jean-Mary signed a two-year contract with Michigan in January of 2020. He made $415,000 in his first season and will make $450,000 in the second year. If he leaves for another job before the expiration of the contract, he owes Michigan a buyout fee that is 100% of his annual base salary.

I guess it's another unpopular opinion, but I'm hoping he goes. IIRC, before the 2020 season, the LBs were seen as the strength of the defense after an excellent 2019. Under BJM, the LB level looked continually lost, slow, and out of position. They didn't seem to be clued in mentally and didn't seem to play with physicality. Now, this may be an effect of poor DL play or a poor defensive scheme overall, but it was pretty clear that BJM did not coach well for whatever reason. I don't think we'll miss him, unless of course the next LB coach hire is a poor one.

Totally get why a guy would take an interview with an nfl team. At the same time, it’s hard to embrace a guy who has one leg out the door.
