B1G apologizes for roughing the kicker call

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Per Brandstatter on the Inside Michigan Football radio show going on right now, the B1G apparently apologized for the awful roughing the punter call that nobody on Earth agreed with.

They should apologize for having any of those refs calling a major college game.

edit: Balas article on it

Harbaugh got apology from the BT about roughing the kicker call. Plus, he loves James Earl Jones' voiced intro, more https://t.co/A2Q4o0qSz1

I'm still here. I see you still think I am someone else. If I got banned, I have no idea why. So, I think I see your thing now. You just assume every newer account is some guy who has gotten banned before, which is extremely ridiculous and obsessive, if you ask me. You do realize that there are millions of Michigan fans, don't you? You need help, dude.

I need some history tutoring on this.  How often has the league apologized for something like this?  Does it ever happen?  No instances are immediately coming to my mind, but I admit to being completely ignorant.

Yep. #1.  That was a great team.  Lost the next week by a point to Iowa (probably still reeling from the bullshit the week before).  Ran the rest of the schedule.  Absolutely crushed Ole Miss in the bowl game.  Ole Miss players said they had never been been hit harder.  The MVP of the game was Michigan's OL.  What might have been...

they don't get hired again? are they forced to attend a continuing education class?

I actually know several college officials and the scrutiny they are under from their assignors is immense.  One friend described the interview process for moving up from D2 to low level D1 and it was like interviewing for an executive position in some company.  Full days of interviews in Chicago.  And that's afer they've evaluated all your game film, listed to your current assignors, and deemed you as a potential new official.

After hired, every play you call is reviewed and graded.  Too many incorrect calls, poor communication with coaches, poor game management, unprofessionalism of the slightest bit and your spot will be taken by the next guy.

It's probably more oversight than exists for 99% of jobs.

Those refs were awful - esp on the missed PI calls. The roughing call seemed like a 'that's just how it's called' thing and the DEF seemed to immediately react like, 'oh shit!' but still a bad call. And yesterday in Denver John Harbaugh was working the refs ALL GAME LONG. Gotta love the intensity!!

has been very hard to track down. I guess one of us will need to record it with one of our phones, if or when it gets played again at the next game. I bet it's another way of getting the student section to show up early like I will be this Saturday. I will tell the wife that they are changing the start time to 11:30am. I will put my beer down (by drinking it) and start walking around 11:15........Go Blue!

I'm just glad this bad call was one that didnt affect the outcome of the game.  An apology after a win is a lot easier to accept than one for a bad call that was a major factor in a loss.

I have to wonder if Big Ten (maybe ACC crews too) crews, after each game and hearing all the complaints (several of which are legitimate), about the quality of the officiating don't recite something similar to the "Men's Prayer" from The Red Greene Show:

I'm a Big Ten official, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

to suspend those back judges. I have a friend who could not make it to the game ask me, how does the entire bar scream interference at the same time, but the officials standing right there can't see it? I asked him how does 100 thousand plus people sitting in the stands see it, and the officials right next to them couldn't see it?

I believe they were B1G officials and they would rather have UM on their ass than the Pac 12 or whatever they call that conference nowadays. They should have officials from other conferences come in and officiate. I assume cost would be the first reason they don't and it would be a good one if these conferences couldn't afford it or wouldn't and take their chances. I know they do this during bowl season but thats a once a year deal and not nearly as expensive.
