B1G apologizes for roughing the kicker call
Per Brandstatter on the Inside Michigan Football radio show going on right now, the B1G apparently apologized for the awful roughing the punter call that nobody on Earth agreed with.
They should apologize for having any of those refs calling a major college game.
edit: Balas article on it
Harbaugh got apology from the BT about roughing the kicker call. Plus, he loves James Earl Jones' voiced intro, more https://t.co/A2Q4o0qSz1

Actually, it turns out Brandstatter mischaracterized what the Big Ten said:
Harbaugh clarified he did not get an apology from Big Ten on rough-kicker penalty but said he received a clarification

The first sentence is his source. The second sentence is his opinion.
Then he edited it.....

It doesn't matter. Michigan won and that is what matters.

I need some history tutoring on this. How often has the league apologized for something like this? Does it ever happen? No instances are immediately coming to my mind, but I admit to being completely ignorant.

They apologized for Desmond being tackled by MSU on the 2 pt conversion in 1990 that cost us the game. It's not a new thing.

They can shove that "sorry" right up their sorry asses.

UM was ranked I believe it was #1 definetly top five, it may have cost them the MNC that year.
September 14th, 2015 at 11:04 PM ^
Yep. #1. That was a great team. Lost the next week by a point to Iowa (probably still reeling from the bullshit the week before). Ran the rest of the schedule. Absolutely crushed Ole Miss in the bowl game. Ole Miss players said they had never been been hit harder. The MVP of the game was Michigan's OL. What might have been...

People say it may have cost Michigan the national title but then Michigan lost the very next week to Iowa.
4 way tie for the Big Ten title that year. Colorado and Georgia Tech splitting the national title.
Weird stuff.

because they were still in a complete fog from losing the Michigan State game. They played that entire game on auto-pilot and still almost pulled it out.
If Michigan beats MSU they roll over Iowa.

They apologized after Desmond was tripped on the 2-point conversion against MSU in 1990.

Ah, thanks. It all comes back to me now. Probably a cursory on-line search could have answered my question, but the collective football IQ that is the Mgomembership can always be counted on.

And for good reason. Even as a Michigan fan, it was hard not to acknowledge Illinois got totally and repeatedly hosed that night. Bizarre game.

Slightly off topic, but does WTKA actually stream the show? Been listening at their web site for 20 minutes and have heard nothing but commercials.
September 14th, 2015 at 7:54 PM ^
No. IMG has the rights to the show.
It's almost over now, but you can listen to a replay of the show on MGoBlueTV.com when it's over.
You can listen live to the show when it's on on the TuneIn radio app by searching the Michigan IMG network.

They are forced to officiate B1G games.

I actually know several college officials and the scrutiny they are under from their assignors is immense. One friend described the interview process for moving up from D2 to low level D1 and it was like interviewing for an executive position in some company. Full days of interviews in Chicago. And that's afer they've evaluated all your game film, listed to your current assignors, and deemed you as a potential new official.
After hired, every play you call is reviewed and graded. Too many incorrect calls, poor communication with coaches, poor game management, unprofessionalism of the slightest bit and your spot will be taken by the next guy.
It's probably more oversight than exists for 99% of jobs.

I don't recall the second one, but that first one was obvious. Even the announcers were saying that was some of the most blatant pass interference they have ever seen.
September 14th, 2015 at 8:09 PM ^
It was our first offensive play in the game, a bomb thrown by Rudock that was perfectly on target. Not as blatant as the end zone one but still interference.

I was in sect 41 and saw the top one up close. There was also a running play where the ref impeded Smith's progress, he actually had to slow to avoid pummeling the ref.

has been very hard to track down. I guess one of us will need to record it with one of our phones, if or when it gets played again at the next game. I bet it's another way of getting the student section to show up early like I will be this Saturday. I will tell the wife that they are changing the start time to 11:30am. I will put my beer down (by drinking it) and start walking around 11:15........Go Blue!

I'm just glad this bad call was one that didnt affect the outcome of the game. An apology after a win is a lot easier to accept than one for a bad call that was a major factor in a loss.
September 14th, 2015 at 9:04 PM ^
I have to wonder if Big Ten (maybe ACC crews too) crews, after each game and hearing all the complaints (several of which are legitimate), about the quality of the officiating don't recite something similar to the "Men's Prayer" from The Red Greene Show:
I'm a Big Ten official, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.
September 14th, 2015 at 9:37 PM ^
to suspend those back judges. I have a friend who could not make it to the game ask me, how does the entire bar scream interference at the same time, but the officials standing right there can't see it? I asked him how does 100 thousand plus people sitting in the stands see it, and the officials right next to them couldn't see it?
I believe they were B1G officials and they would rather have UM on their ass than the Pac 12 or whatever they call that conference nowadays. They should have officials from other conferences come in and officiate. I assume cost would be the first reason they don't and it would be a good one if these conferences couldn't afford it or wouldn't and take their chances. I know they do this during bowl season but thats a once a year deal and not nearly as expensive.
