After 4 Games...what changes (if any) would YOU like to see?

Michigan is 4-0, but improvement can always be made.

So after 4 games, what changes would you like to see?

Agree. And this has been such a high-percentage play, there's really no reason try it only a couple of times a game. Throw it long 5 or 6 times--you might hit on a couple of them and completely change the feel of the game.

It's the same with the reverses. They ran two with Henning last week and both were hugely successful. Why not keep running them until the defense actually stops it? That's what people keep harping on about with regard to the inside running game when it's working. The same logic ought to apply to other non-inside-running plays.

I’d like to see ‘speed in space’ show up.
I’d like to see a QB make throws rolling out.
I’d like to see runs pop to the perimeter instead of the middle.

And a few from Crash Davis as well.

I’d like to see more of the fan base learn that Jim Harbaugh isn’t calling the plays.

(In the postgame interview on the field after the win over Washington, who was it again that Haskins credited for the gameplan and play calls?)

This whole “Good play=Gattis, bad play=Harbaugh” thing needs to go.

Why Mike Hart? He seems to understand offenses and Gattis doesn't appear to. As was pointed out in another thread there's were a couple times Harbaugh wanted a play and Gattis had nothing, hence the end of the first half. It's time to get someone else in there and see if they're worse. Because Gattis is a waste as an OC.

More mix-and-match on offense. We've got the players to both run the ball and pass it, so DO IT ALL. Mix it up. Keep teams off-balance. Use the speed: Wilson, Henning, Sainristil, Corum, etc. On defense I want them all to play with the intensity of Hutchinson and Ross.

Good question: I like to see much better QB play. The RPO plays are few and far between. When they do happen, they are not executed well. Who's at fault with this? Gattis, Matt Weis, the QB coach or even the ability for Cade to run these plays with success?

The last thing we need is to see our starting QB regress like Speight, O'Korn or Shea Patterson did in just the recent past. We need that QB that has the ability to carry the team on his back, not just for a game or two during the entire season. Hard to remember when we had such a talent at QB, it's been a long while.

Cade has the second highest QB rating (minimum 100 passes) for a Michigan QB since 1956. He’s at 147.9 to Grbac’s 148.5.
His rating is up 31.5 points over last season. He’s averaging 10 yards per attempt so far.

I was a student during Grbac’s career. There was a sizable contingent calling for him to be replaced. That’s the nature of the position.

One bad half of football and a toxic dose of recency bias has elements of this Board losing its mind. The numbers don’t support this poor QB’ing meme. We can pass, and have passed very well. For whatever reason, we had a bad half of football. The data so far suggests that’s an anomaly. Next Saturday gives us another data point.

You mean like not turtling (and not just turtling, but flatly refusing to come out of the fucking shell) at the first sign of adversity? I would like to see less of this, please.

No changes needed, very excited about this team!  I have friends-many friends, very important friends-in the program.  They shared the offensive gameplan with me for the remainder of the season, and I've been studying it for hours.  I can't hope to understand the sheer genius, so I'm sharing it with you guys to see if you can interpret for me.  Any help is appreciated.  Bang Head Here Hitting Head Against Wall Head Hitting Brick Wall Gif – Thegratedcom | Gif Meme on ME.ME

Defense - sadly, I think the changes we'd like to see are simply not possible. Personnel based issues, DL/LB seems a real concern given yesterday was perhaps the worst OL left on the schedule. Secondary is limited. Frankly, they've probably over-achieved to this point. Best hope of change is that they've got a wrinkle or two that can create some havoc plays, squeeze out an extra stop here and there against the better teams ahead.

Offense - QB making the right checks and reads then executing consistently. He seemed to be doing that through the first half yesterday so maybe there is improvement and it was that helmet to helmet? Maybe the whole unit just had one of those football moments where they relaxed and then it is so hard to get it back? Maybe the coaches do hold the reins a bit too much? Clear that there is a good enough OL and enough quality playmakers that the rest of the season depends on those pre and immediate post snap decisions and clean execution by the QB. He can do it, we've seen the glimpses but against the rest of the schedule it has got to be dependably there down after down.

Special Teams - Best part of the team. Moody miss is a slight note of caution as that was the first one with 'put the game away' type pressure.

Changes we just wont see .

Adapting to whats going on in game. Not the same  , stupid , stubborn , unchanging play calling .

Running the ball successfully for 3 games only gave Harbaugh more confidence that his way was the only way .

Don't know yet. I was at the game and so many unknowns.

Cade McNamara was 6-8 in the first half and 1-3 and in the second. ? Play calling or was he not quite himself after getting dinged in the helmet hit that resulted in the targeting call.

Hasan Haskins had been splitting the carries with Blake Corum. No criticism of either back but they complemented each other and kept each fresh. In the game, Corum seemed to in more and more and ended up with 2x the number of carries - ? Was Haskins hurting ? No Donovan Edwards?

As many noted there developed a fixation on running between the tackle and guard or guard and center. ? where were the reverses and wider runs we saw in the earlier games ?

The special teams played well and set up several short fields that were squandered.

The defense really came up when it had to but on 1st and 2nd down had few answers for the Vedral-Pacheco read option.

Michigan was shut out in the second half - that should lead to a serious internal analysis of the offense.

This was like a pop quiz that showed how much studying needs to be done in a class. Now comes a real test - on the road against two wounded teams.

Coaching. They still regress to the mean under adversity and consistently get out schemed. They are 4-0, sure that’s nice, but 2 MAC teams, 1 horrid Washington team and…Rutgers. I believe this team will at least win 8 games this year, not terrible, but the same losses will show up again. Without the talent advantage, no way UM wins yesterday. The defense is good enough to support the offense. The offensive playmakers are good enough to win the conference this year based on what we’ve seen thus far. The coaches will let this team down again. Well, who else could they get? Honestly, I don’t care. I would just like to see another coaching staff have a chance with this talent.

More play action.  Cade keep it on the read at least twice a game.  Call holding when Aiden is held.  Get better every week.  Make the one flat half we just had the last of the season.

Test the edges if insistent on running. Mix in screens and jet sweeps if you have too. Actually have the QB do a couple of RO

I mean if something isn't working, continuing to do it when the defense has clearly adjusted, is pretty damn obstinate.

Adjust to what the opposition is doing in game.

Nothing will change. Play calling sucks and has sucked for a few seasons now. Nothing will change in that we turtle at the slightest sign of adversity. Nothing will change in that Harbaugh will always be stuck in the 1980s play style. Nothing will change. We are what we are. Mediocre at best

3rd and 12 run up the middle and punt on a short field at this stage really should just be time for a change.

You CRUSH your team spirit when they think their coaches are doing stupid things over and over again.

I never played this game so I won't pretend I'm smart enough to know what Michigan should be doing that it currently isn't. But I just feel like there is a reckoning coming for this team. Not sure if it'll be next week, at MSU, at home against OSU, or some combination of all of the above, but yesterday seemed very, very ominous.

I don't doubt that Schiano has got Rutgers on the right track, but that is still a team devoid of talent and they absolutely punk'd Michigan in the second half. If they can do it, on the road no less, I'm terrified to see what other, better teams with more plentiful talent can do.

Whoever drew up the game plan against OSU in 2017, the game plan against Penn State in that second half come back that almost succeeded, the game plan against Notre Dame when Michigan paved them, and the Wisconsin game plan of 2018.

Whoever drew those game plans up should be the one calling plays. If that’s Harbaugh taking over, Gattis running what he wants with no leash, someone else, I don’t care. Find whoever called those and you’ll see a Michigan team that is hard to beat.

I want the offensive coaches to trust their players, even when they're clearly struggling.

That means not being afraid to call plays. It felt like the playbook suddenly got limited and uncreative after a full half of creativity.

The offense was bad as a whole in the 2nd half (everybody was executing poorly)...the response isn't to turtle. After the 2nd 3 and out its time to change things up. It shouldn't take two more failures to get somebody to call a damn edge run!

I'd like to see more wins.  Winning all your games isn't acceptable, the team needs to exceed expectations and win more than all the games.  I'd also like to hear more opinions from fans about what the team should and shouldn't be doing.

JJ, running a true zone read.

Not only because it would make the offense better, but also because our defense would then see it in practice.

Win-win.

Credit to the OP. Good discussion topic.

I would prefer more use of three defensive lineman. The two-man DL with Ojabo and Hutchinson is a bit, “meh” for me. I think it gives more options for pass rush.

On offense, need better preparation from the quarterback position and execution of the RPO. Rutgers ends may have been even more effective at containing the running game yesterday then the interior of the defense. More consistent pistol formation could allow bouncing a counter outside a pinching end. Or a few QB keeps could at least keep the DEs honest.
