OT: Favorite/Least Favorite Ad Campaigns

Submitted by Qmatic on
With Dr. Pepper announcing that Larry Cullpepper would not be returning this season (thank god), it got me thinking what are some of your favorite and least favorite ad campaigns. Favorite: Bud Ice Penguin. Least: FLO from Progressive

I live near Geico HQ and have been in it sevreal times for some tech work.

Very boring company in a boring industry.

So it is amazing to me that they have had so many successful memorable ad campaings over the years . . . The gecko, the cavemen, the "surprising" ala Marco Polo, "It's what you do", and so on.

Sometimes they are running multiple of these ad campaigns at the same time.

Most companies never even have one noteworthy ad campaign.  Geico has so many they compete with themselves.

Mountain Dew's "Puppy Monkey Baby" ad from a few years ago. "Bizarre" and "grotesque" would be two of the words I'd use to describe it. The other words aren't printable.

Also the Hungry Howie's ad team commercials, with the fat, annoying jackass. Proof that stupid does not equal funny.

"Sometimes momma wants to drive like a mother."

I love how she just casually slips that line in there in an ad for truck rentals.

in all the current Chevy commercials telling us how awesome their cars are. My wife hates the Marie Osmond Nutri-system ads. I love the All State accident forgiveness commercial with the son trying to con his parents by telling them how smart they were to buy that policy and mom says “Four weeks with no car “ and he “Okay, fine good night.”

All Night Long is a song I grew up listening to as my mom is a big Lionel fan. Seeing the grin it brought to her face during the Super Bowl makes me happy and the commercials themselves are pretty funny.

Another couple that come to mind: Terry Tate: Office Linebacker, Volkswagen's UnPimp Your Ride, and it was a one off, but Tracy Morgan for Beats By Dre during Christmas 2015 still makes me laugh

There are a lot of ad campaigns that were overdone to the point of being annoying, but one of the campaigns that drove me up the wall was the Mentos commercials of the 1990s / early 2000s. Actually, I found a spoof of it some years ago that helped cleanse my mind of these commercials.....

but I hate being treated like I'm a moron by food packaging and it's gotten so stupidly out of hand that I get irritated at grocery stores on the regular.  If you know even a little science it's worse because most of the advertisements intentionally mislead people into thinking good things are bad and the demand causes some crappy environmental results just to scam money off of people.

I liked the Budweiser frogs. Also liked the Geico cavemen early on before they ran them into the ground. Also the old trident gum commercials “who wants Trident? I do I do. Cinnamon flavor. I do I do”

I'm pretty sure it was Fox Sports that had the "___ would be better if it were hockey" commercials. Those were pretty good. I remember bowling, golf, and billiards, there may have been others. I also liked the MasterCard commercial with the guy who is the Stanley Cup escort ... "White gloves $4, silver polish $$, spending every minute with the Stanley cup .. priceless" Lastly, not a big fan of Lou Holtz, but his Discover card commercial was pretty amusing. Least favorite? Ambulance chasing lawyers. Buick, Dr Pepper

Favorite: "Snickers satisfies." There's been many separate campaigns they've had under this slogan, notably the diva ones as of the last few years, but I think the peak was the Halloween one with the grocery store "lady." Least favorite: Arby's "Good mood food." I hated it so much that I literally boycotted Arby's until they finally got rid of it. Worst campaign ever and I hope the marketing campaign that created it never got hired anywhere again.

Good: Beef Jerky Messing with Sasquatch. I always got a good laugh out of these. The later commercials in this series weren't as good as the early ones, but I still found them relatively entertaining. Bad: Subway commercials with Jared. I didn't like those commercials as a kid because he seemed creepy as f*ck. Turns out he is creepy as f*ck.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the awful GM ads with the "focus groups" and that bearded douchbag. They have been going on for years and aggravate the hell out of me.
