11 Warriors on Shea Patterson

Submitted by Caesar on

Interesting, well-written stuff (link), though I look forward to more of Brian's analysis.

To summarize, Patterson's last Ole Miss OC relied on receivers winning 1-on-1 matchups against teams with less talent and quick throws/RPOs against the 'Bama/LSUs of college football. Importantly, however, that offense did not require him to make a 'read' in the traditional sense of the word. He isn't looking at a linebacker stance as much as he's trusting his receivers to get open after they make route adjustments based on the coverages. In this context, Patterson is praised for his ability to drop the ball in a bucket and knowing where that bucket needs to go. He definitely has great tools.

The negatives start with Patterson getting spooked after LSU/'Bama DLs aged his body by a few years. Patterson's throwing mechanics (which apparently need work to begin with) are entirely abandoned and get further out-of-sync. This even showed up against Cal. Also, the author asserts that Michigan runs a ball-control offense that relies much more on precision and reads than did the Ole Miss offense. If Patterson's INT rate persists, it will be unnacceptable in this different schematic context.

Questions. I'd really appreciate it if any knowledgeable commenters can get into the weeds about his throwing motion, comparing the Ole Miss offense to Michigan, and some ideas on the probable transition cost.

Edit: Welcome back UMBig11! I hope all is well with your family, and we look forward to your insights whenever things clear up for you.

there will be people here screaming for Patterson to be benched because he's not yet the second coming of Brady, Henson, and Harbaugh all rolled into one.

Rudock didn't show up until fall camp whereas of course Patterson has been with the program since winter classes started.  I expect whichever QB they go with on September 1, that QB will be in fine form for the season.

I think expectations are actually low for Shea among college football fans despite the articles telling you to settle down and the other articles that say he is a 1st round pick.

I think the 1st round pick articles are met with a great deal of skepticism when the fact is he is highly talented and capable of being a 1st round pick. He doesnt need to be perfect. He just has to beat OSU, MSU and PSU. We have seen in the past that above average QB play alone would result in wins.

I am alone here in seeing Patterson as a project this year.  HJe's coming from a single read offense with different footwork than what he'll have in ours.  He definitely has the tools, but it might take him a year or more to learn not only a new play book, but a totally new offense.  And Shea's stats last year were misleading.  Put up monster numbers vs terrible teams or in a blowout loss when he was passing on Auburn's 3rd stringers.  Looked average to bad vs LSU, Bama, and even Cal.

I know I will be alone in saying this too, but Peters has a 50-50 shot at beating Shea out to start at ND at least.  Peters has just as big of arm, is more of a drop back QB, and knows our offense.

I'm just as excited as everyone else that he gets to play this year, but fans need to pump the breaks a little.  Imagine if Peters wins the job, it's going to be njo good at all if our fanbase is immediately screaming for Patterson the second Peters has a bad quarter.

Peterson will not beat out Paterson. Shea is already the starter in Harbaugh’s mind as well as the team. The talent gap is obvious. Injury is the only reason he would not start. To say Peters has any shot to start is just wrong.

I don't give a damn about the whole state of Ohio.  And instead of writing a song to contradict what I just said, I'll just leave it at that.

As it  hurts me to say this, I have to give credit to elevenwarriors.  They have constant articles being churned out that are well writted and entertaining.  It should not be considered as a blog or even an indie site.  They do their fair job at promoting hatred towards us, the good guys. I guess it helps to have a program successful to want to constantly write something about.

To get back on topic:

The article was solid, however I feel that it praised Shea a bit much.  I'm hoping Shea, or whever is at the helm, lights the scoreboard up next season.  But, I have to reserve my excitement until I see what happens during the ND game...

All of this is just hype.

First, IMO it's not unlikely that LT will take a step back AND the rest of the line will be much improved.

A good coaching staff (which we have), will adapt the team and playcalling to its strengths and weaknesses. TE's/RB's will be deployed to help out the left side, the QB will move away from potential trouble, and counters will be used to try to keep the DE's honest.

Second, there is little doubt in my mind that Shea is an upgrade over last year's QBs, and that he will continue to improve. Sure, he has to learn a new system, but he will also benefit from Harbaugh's proven QB coaching. It will also be his 2nd year as a starter - that's very often when QBs grow from good to excellent.

I'm bullish on this season - defense will keep games close, and we will have experienced players in place to win close games.

Comments on the article on 11W fairly predictable. But one common thread is their respect for Warinner. Most put down UofM’s OL but many have caveats to the effect “it’s possible for Warinner to work a miracle and whip the OL into a competent unit.” Feeling even better about the OL due to the respect they obviously have for Warinner.

is that the offense is not going to be the same as last year. Harbaugh has been very vocal about changing the offensive style to something that can fit into Shea's strengths. Also, I don't exactly know what they are saying about his mechanics. I have watched a ton of film on him and I used to play Qb back in the day and can say with confidence, they are not an issue. Shea might have the best mechanics in the big ten this year, and is proven to have them.
